King Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Family.. If Kim want's to play in TO to be with Ryu, and his family, wife etc want to live, have kids go to school in SD/distance from Korea, large Korean community, family/wife almost always wins. I don't care if you are a pro baseball player or Joe Schmoe.. Wife says she wants to live somewhere and you say I want to hang with a buddy or want to hang in a lake house in the forest, (my case, and I don't live there) and your wife says no... The wife always wins.. So family wanting to be in SD, plus the MLB playing time guaranty.. Not such a mystery.. Sounds like your wife definitely wears the pants around the house.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Sounds like your wife definitely wears the pants around the house. and I'm guessing you're single.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Sounds like your wife definitely wears the pants around the house. Says a guy who has never been married... Just wait young Padawan... It is great fun!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Author Posted December 29, 2020 Agree on all.counts Will be really weird if the guy ends up being Realmuto That's probably the most realistic outcome, but Heyman tweeted yesterday that he is the top priority for Philly and that they have an offer out for him (he's still testing the market like everyone else). With Dombrowski there, I would think that deal gets done at some point unless the Jays offer blows them out the water, and I just don't think Atkins does that with 5 catchers on the 40 man and 2 of them being top 10 prospects in the system (Kirk/Moreno). If his price falls, and Philly bows out, then maybe there's a chance. Springer (Mets), Bauer (LA team), and LeMahieu (Yanks) seem destined to sign elsewhere. Sugano is probably going to a West Coast team or NY. There are still good players out there, and the Jays will end up with some of them (they are buyers when supply is high and demand is low so they'll get good players), but I don't think any of the top names will be included in there. The trade market might change that though (Lindor, Cincy players, Kris Bryant, etc).
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 and I'm guessing you're single. Another guy whose wife wears the pants ^
Scion Verified Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Reports out of SD are now saying that the Padres will not move Cronenworth off of 2B to make room for Kim. So as it stands his current role will be as a utility player. This, coupled with the lower than projected salary and rumors of a demotion clause from the Jays lead me to believe that perhaps the public sphere's opinion was not in line with the industry's valuation of Kim.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 No offense, but this sounds like something a non married guy would say. He is probably too young to remember when we signed AJ Burnett.. A HUGE consideration of that signing was his wife and her horses and distance from home and IIR she didn't like to fly and the Jays had to include X amount of limo trips for his family etc... Buehlre would have never signed as a FA with TO due to his Pitbulls love.. Family and personal issues/wants/needs are huge factors in FA signings.

I just watched this on MLBN, their going to use him as a super sub, many suggested that on here, including myself. The money was obviously well off from what he was projected at. They want to use him like Kike's time with the Dodgers. And yes folks, in the OF as well.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 I agree my take is a bit emotional/in the moment but personally not a big fan of trading for Lindor. In general I don't really believe in trading for players one year ahead of free agency. Of course it depends on the cost but from an asset management perspective it doesn't make sense. I think a Semien/Lemahieu signing could lessen the sting here depending on the contract. But if we are at bargain bin prices then will they pick Toronto over other spots? The age of Kim was a huge 'plus' in my mind as his prime aligned with our young core. That said, it appears his upside may be somewhat limited. With the likes of Didi, Semien and Simmons out there - I think there's a strong possibility that all 3 out perform Kim over the next 2-3 years.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Can Tommy La Stella play third? After Turner there really aren’t any other good options a team trying to compete would want to roll out. I don’t think Didi/Semien are going to sign as third baseman and Simmons definitely isn’t. Moving Bichette off the position for one of those guys doesn’t excite me at all.

If they can land Springer somehow, I think it’d be a nice secondary signing to reinforce IF for year or two
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Don’t sleep on Didi though. Could easily be a 4+ win player for less than $10m/yr short term. But having to move BB off Short would have to factor in obviously
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Tommy La Stella would be a great fit for the Jays.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 And another one to the list. All these guys with low T letting their better half's run the show!

I wouldn't want to move him off SS unless it was for a superstar (Lindor). If Didi were willing to move to 3B or 2B (not sure how he'd do there defensively), then he'd be a great fit as a LH bat, but I'm not moving Bo off SS for him, and he can likely find a SS job somewhere. Same with Semien and Simmons. La Stella would be a good stopgap who can cover multiple positions. If Profar was a better defensive IF then he'd be a good option as well given his versatility but he doesn't appear to be good at any IF position defensively.

Simmons definitely isn't coming here, he kiboshed the trade last year in coming here. I'm with you on not moving Bichette off SS for those guys, we need a 3rd baseman. wilko Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 I was a bit disappointed the Jays didn't land Kim, but as it was said here.. he's a wildcard. Without having the minor league demotion, i'm glad they didn't do it.

Agreed with Bichette being the best player on the team. He's played like 80 games in the show - I am fine with giving him another year to improve at the position.

I have no idea what a Bryant trade looks like. I don't love the idea of trading for a guy looking to bounce back after a brutal season, but currently our 3B situation is terrible.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Author Posted December 30, 2020 Depends what the cost would be, but Bryant would be a nice pickup. He's never going to be MVP Bryant again, but a 3-4 WAR player is not out of the question if he bounces back. He was practically a 140 wRC+ bat from 2015-19, and had a terrible 30+ games in 2020. I'd take my chances there. What the Cubs would want in return is the question.

I couldn't agree more. It's abundantly clear that no teams saw him as a likely 3+ WAR starter like many in the industry are predicting.

I'd take the upside and downside for 30 million IMO.

RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 1 year rental Bryant, he shouldn't be expensive, especially if we eat most or all of his salary. Hendricks and Bryant wouldnt be bad at all.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 I understand this perspective but Lourdes Gurriel was viewed in much the same way. I'd take the upside and downside for 30 million IMO. Lourdes Gurriel also had to be sent down to AAA to figure it out which is what we wouldn’t be able to do with Kim. I understand if it were a 2 year deal, but 4-5 years is too long to have someone waste a roster spot if it turns out they can’t hit. And there’s probably a make up component to this as well. If he thinks he’s that good, he should have no reservations about going to the minors to figure stuff out if needed, especially when he’s going to be getting his major league guaranteed salary while there.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Could Lourdes be our 3rd base solution if we sign Springer?
