Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 I think you mean DWL. Yes, winterball... my bad. We'll see how he does soon enough. I'm ready!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Not worried about his bat because he was an above average hitter even with the body of the fat dude from 90 day fiance. The problem is his baseball IQ out on the field is so terrible I'm wondering if he can even be a passable first basemen at this point. Really doesn't matter that much, whether he's an above average defender at first or strictly a DH, everything is tied to his lumber!

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 He's a liability on the field and strictly a DH imo. Okay, like I said, it doesn't matter, his value is the bat.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 28, 2021 Posted February 28, 2021 Okay, like I said, it doesn't matter, his value is the bat. Yes, he's probably never going to be a positive defender at any position. Which I'm fine with if he racks up massive quantities of walks/doubles/home runs.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Agreed. He's big everywhere so he's not just going to lose weight in the belly. Maintain the current weight throughout the season then lose another 25 in the offseason again. I think Vladdy at 220 is the way to go.
Thaddeus Malice Verified Member Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 It's actually amazing to see how much of a difference this has made. That's a great improvement in sprint speed. If he gets just a bit more into shape, we're not going to have any concerns about needing to make him into a DH and in an emergency can even pop him over to third.

The arm is good. His speed is average. And he's taking ground balls almost every day at 1B. So yeah he could probably play some 3B without scaring us.

So yeah he could probably play some 3B without scaring us. I just wanted to point out that Vladdy is putting out career highs in statcast sprint speed 26.7 ft/sec, up from 25.3 ft/sec last season. This is slight above average and puts him in the same ball park with some outfielders and shortstops such as Jurickson Profar (26.7), Javier Baez (26.7), Randal Grichuk (26.9), Aaron Hicks (26.6). Vladdy is technically faster than Paul Goldschmidt (26.6), Yoan Moncada (26.5), Bryce Harper (26.5), DJ LeMahieu (26.4), Gleyber Torres (26.4), Corey Seager (26.3), Andrelton Simmons (26.2), Nolan Arenado (25.7) by statcast sprint speed. And just for reference, Bichette (28.1), Semien (28.5), Biggio (28.4) are all above average runners. Edited April 16, 2021 by BlueRocky
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 Yeah he looks amazing this year in every facet. Running the bases well, doing the splits at first, hurting baseballs. Not some fat DH after all! I wonder if he could handle LF...
mellowgold Verified Member Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 Really impressed with Vlad this year (how could you not be). He looks like a completely different player. Already up to 1.0 WAR after 13 games this year, after totalling 0.6 over 183 games his first two seasons. Dude looks legit terrifying at the plate right now.

First in 1B AL WAR so far, just ahead of Yuli Gurriel (who is also off to a ridiculous start). All the usual big name guys are way behind. If he keeps this up could well be on his way to his first ASG.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 Vlad has arrived. Buckle up boys - it's going to be a hell of a ride.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 I just looked at his stats. 233 wRC+ yikes. Its been great to see his emergence to be more of what he and most of us expected. Kudos to him for working out so hard to get his weight down. He looks better in all facets of the game.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 There should be a public flogging here for all the Vlad doubters. Handles should be posted as their “A” to carry around
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 A lightbulb had to go off in his head to get in shape, and if two seasons of underperforming was the reason, then it was worth it. He looks better in every facet of the game, and if he continues to take his body seriously, then he's going to age far more gracefully as a player as well (in case an extension/free agent contract after 2025 is in the cards).

I definitely voiced my displeasure with Vlad - questioning whether a kid with a trust fund would care enough to put in the effort needed to maximize the talent he had and become a superstar. It wouldn't make a tangible difference in his life if he became a superstar, or just a good player. Vlad showed this offseason he could - I'm very impressed and happy to eat crow. I do hope he can continue with that motivation throughout this career (and honestly, it's probably still a real concern).

Handles should be posted as their “A” to carry around There should be a public flogging to Vlad and his inner circle of enablers for allowing him to be 40+ pounds overweight when he's already a chunky monkey to begin with. He looked like a useless piece of s*** last season. He couldn't run, he couldn't field, he made stupid mental errors constantly, he endlessly pounded the ball into the ground and looked he had zero plan or approach at the plate while swinging at anything and everything. He gave people a good reason to doubt him with his low level of commitment to fitness and his overall performance, and he has nobody to blame but himself for that. Good on him for correcting that mistake however.

Handles should be posted as their “A” to carry around I mean... its 2 weeks. He’s shown these flashes of brilliance before. Lets see what his numbers are like at the end of the season. Saying Vlad is now a permanent 150wRC+ bat after 2 weeks is just as stupid as claiming Biggio is nothing more than a utility player after the same sample size. Absolutely loving what I’m seeing right now though and I’ll gladly accept criticism for being wrong. He does LOOK like a completely different player.

I think people have a misunderstanding of Vladdy. Yes his dad is a hall of famer and treated like royalty back home, but he wasn’t exactly in line to win father of the year award. Not gonna comment on Sr’s family matters and lifestyle choices. But Vlad Jr grew up idolizing his father that was never around. He lived with his grandma and was taught by his uncle Wilton Guerrero. Vladdy never had that demeanor of a rich family’s kid that’s been groomed with the best education and luxuries (e.g. Bichette). He was just a down to earth country bumpkin that loved baseball and looked up to pops. Edited April 16, 2021 by BlueRocky
