I think the only way to get that in a market like this is just to give a guy like Odorizzi or Paxton the multi-year deal they are looking for.

People might be looking past Odorizzi. He was pretty sick in 2019 and in 2020 his increased velocity was there. Only 30 years old right now. There's upside on something like 3/$36.

Or he might just suck. No idea what was going on in 2020. Looks like he couldn't get ahead of hitters and therefore he wasn't fooling hitters or getting whiffs.

I like Odorizzi. Seems like the upside is 4+ WAR if the 2019 velo holds and 2019 version of him shows up. The floor looks to be a 2 WAR pitcher.

Did anyone happen to see the career stat lines on Bauer and Roark?

Almost identical.

Yea the career stat lines are similar but they are verrrry different pitchers after this point in their careers. Bauer is an all star pitcher whos made substantial improvements the last 3 years while roark is a washed up shitballer.

Why do people do this? Literally no front office cares that Tanner Roark was better than Bauer from 2014-2017, not to mention the obvious 4 age gap.

Lol @ pitcher W-L and WHIP in this day and age. If you look at stats that actually matter they couldn't be more different.

Predicting landing spots for top remaining MLB free agents

Fun little prediction read. Not a fan of Wong being linked to us so heavily. I don't want to move Biggio to 3rd just to fit him here.

Wouldn't mind Rosenthal, Odorizzi and Didi to finish the offseason. Will still hope for Bryant/Hendricks.

Bryant/Hendricks + Rosenthal

Or

Bauer + Rosenthal + Didi or Wong

The latter is my preference because it only costs money and a 3rd round pick (from Bauer). It's more expensive, but we hang onto our Top 15 prospects.

There was a recent indication from Atkins that moving Biggio to 3B is not something they really want to do. Like, they'll do it if all they can land is a 2B but they clearly would prefer to leave him at second and sign a 3B

Ya I saw enough of Biggio at 3rd to know he can't play there unless it's for emergency situations. Spring training is happening soon so the market will have to pick up soon.

They were also willing to trade for a SS, an exceptional defensive one in Lindor, and sounds like they're considering Simmons as well who is even better. So maybe it's if they can get an elite defensive SS they'll make those moves but otherwise they prefer not to? There are just a lot more middle IF options available this year and next and not that many 3B.

If we do sign Bauer I can already see the board bitching like crazy about his attitude. Jose Bautista hit 40+ jacks a year and damn near got us to a World Series and you clowns constantly complained about him.

I think Jays only carry the stigma with American players that Canada sucks. Don’t think we’ll necessarily need to go extra years or even money with a guy like Tanaka. Hope it heats up- 2/30 or something if his market is slow?

Are we still pushing this narrative? Pretty sure that the mental midgets who think Canada sucks would also think the "Democratically-run U.S. cities" also suck. Other than SoCal and New York and Miami for the Cubans I don't see the average U.S. city being at that much of an advantage over Toronto. The average team is supposed to sign 1 out of every 30 coveted free agents (or 1 out of 26 back in the 80's). I'm reasonably sure that the Blue Jays have outperformed that average over the franchise's history.

The lasting Ricciardi/Godfrey legacy on this franchise is the effective brainwashing of the fan base to think that the Jays just can't compete with the big bad New Yorkers. It was never an issue for Gillick, Beeston, AA and I'm optimistic it's not an issue for Shapiro or Atkins either.

The Angels strength coach is his friend though.

I think the more important Angels staff member that Bauer would have a problem with is their pitching coach, Mickey Callaway.

https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/02/19/trevor-bauer-cleveland-indians-training-tools-twitter-controversy-cy-young

The Indians tried to change him too, if more modestly. A few years ago, Bauer says, Mickey Callaway—then the Tribe’s pitching coach, now the Mets’ manager—berated him during batting practice for nearly an hour for refusing to throw more fastballs. Callaway had a point: Bauer’s career ERA was around 4.50. Bauer had a point too. “My process has been the same the entire time,” he says. “I’m going to try to find every single way to do better, and I’ve probably researched it more than you have. Don’t tell me what I do and don’t know without some good f---ing data behind it.”

But regardless he's almost definitely just going to follow the money.

I think with more reps at the position he would almost certainly improve a lot, but early defensive metrics aren't pretty to say the least. In his small sample at third base in 2020 (only 10 games) he graded almost as poorly as Vlad's numbers from 2019.

Simmons is a tough player to gauge. He's suffered from a substantial defensive decline with the spate of recent ankle injuries. There is a real question as to whether he will continue to be elite going forward.

It's pretty much only an NBA problem but no one outside of California/New York/Miami get superstar free agents anyways

I can practically guarantee you people will get sick of his antics no matter how good he is on the field. He'll quickly fall into the Jose, Stro, Lawrie category - teetering on the fence of simply being an intense competitor who isn't afraid to speak his mind or show emotion and that of a complete douchebag, who, at times would be better off just playing the game and shutting his yap.

There will always be lots of fans who don't like that type of player (or who get sick of the antics). While I can appreciate their passion and what they bring to the team, I often get stick of how they act and thus they are never amongst my favourite players on the team (Jose, Stro, Lawrie, Kyle Lowry, etc.). But that's OK. Different strokes for different folks.

And Bauer apparently hates Mickey Calloway's guts, who's the Angels' pitching coach. So it evens out haha

I would like to think that Bauer's playoff appearance in front of our home fans with CLE could play a part in his decision. Our playoff crowds were truly psychotic.

Was a memorable series for him!

As long as he's not worse than Stro.

It's quite possible to argue that Bauer is already worse than Stroman and you're kidding yourself if you don't think this is the case.

I am guilty but not for the reason you suggest. I wanted to take the Rays approach and trade him for a haul before he turned to s***.

He's got an opinion on everything and is one of the most vocal insecure posters on twitter. Spends a lot of his free time feeding the trolls.

It depends in what terms you're talking.

Bauer isn't obsessed with being known as an underdog where it's him against the world, Stro also likes to cry victim among other things.

If Bauer also does that, I must have missed it.
