Blue Jays still trying for free-agent outfielder Michael Brantley, sources tell @TheAthletic. Brantley is close friends with George Springer and represented by same agency, Excel Sports Management. Wrote Sunday about possibility of NBA-style package deal. https://t.co/er4Jj5HtF6?amp=1

I don't see why. I mean, he might want more than they're willing to pay, but they have lots of room on the payroll to fit both if they wanted to.

I agree, just not sure they spend it on him. Here's our payroll now:

Prior to Chatwood, Yates & Springer:

76.5M

Chatwood 3M

Yates 5.5M

Springer 25M

So we're at 110M now.

Adding Bauer likely puts us at 140-145M. I'd do it, just not sure they wouldn't rather spread that to Wong/Paxton/Bryant?

f*** Wong man lol. He’s a career below avg bat and projected as such. His marginally positive defense over a full season may get him to 2 WAR but come playoff time (in short series’) that’s not a plus asset. Jays can make better use of the $

Agree, much rather Semien buy low coming off a bad season if we are getting another IF.

If they get Brantley they clearly have a trade in the works involving at least one of our current outfielders

Lourdes and prospects for a front line pitcher like Castillo would make some sense. Then you add a 3B and call it an offseason.

Actually, two guys need to be removed from the 40-man. Was at 39 before Chatwood, Yates, and Springer.

Yeah, they must, otherwise it makes very little sense. Hopefully for a good return, 'cause I sorta prefer Teo/LGJ to Brantley? I mean, all things considered (age/likely contract etc...)

Agreed 100% man.

Tice and Palacios as the other two maybe?

If we sign Brantley as well, we can trade 2 of LGJ, Teo, Tellez.

I'd be fine trading both LGJ & Teo for Castillo if it limits our prospect capital cost.

LGJ, Teoscar, Kay, Hiraldo & Pardinho for Castillo

I wonder if that's enough to land him.

Doubt it. It would almost certainly cost one of Vladdy or Bichette to even get them to the table.

I would think that is close, but I don't think you need to deal two of them. I think that 6 players (Vlad, Tellez, Lourdes/Teo, Brantley, Springer, Grichuk) could find enough at-bats at 5 positions, especially if Vlad plays some 3B. It's not like we have prospects that need a shot in the outfield.

There’s legit legs to the Michael Brantley package deal and #BlueJays are very open to it, per source.

It would create an outfield logjam, but the extra OF and catcher pieces in the system could be used to upgrade the rotation, which is the clear, clear, clear need at this point.

Could we have the best offense in baseball if we get Brantley too? Would be top 5 minimum and probably top 3.

I think maybe top 5/6 Mets, Dodgers, San Diego, CWS and Yankees would be ahead or close to us IMO. Also, if we end up trading a Teo or LGR if we add Brantley, then no. We need to have all those guys.

Padres, Chisox, Dodgers, Yankees, Mets would be the top lineup competition.

I would have only the Yankees and Dodgers ahead of the Jays, but if Vlad takes it up a notch and Jansen gets a normal BABIP, Jays are right there at the top with them.

This may be a hot take (although I don't think it's that outlandish), Bichette is a more valuable asset than Gleyber Torres and that asking price was a non starter for the Yankees.

Now obviously the Reds aren't in any rush to move Castillo, so if their asking price is one of those two then quite clearly there is no discussion to be had.

I didn't count Vlad, as so far he is name only. If Vlad becomes the guy we thought, then that changes the equation. As of now I was only considering. Teo, LGR, Bichette, Biggio, Springer and a hypothetical Brantley.

Say what? Vlad is 21, through a season and a half has a 108 wRC. He's only getting better, right? So 2021, reasonable to project at least a 115 wRC? The projections are all over 120 and as high as 140.

Not using projections, unless I am then adding Vaughn and guys like that to the equation. A lot of teams have guys that produced like Vlad did/has so far. We both forgot Atlanta, the Braves should be in the top teams conversation also.

Just going through the teams for potential available SP.

Colorado (Marquez, J. Gray)

Tigers (Boyd)

Red Sox (Eovaldi)

Royals (Duffy, Keller)

Rangers (Gibson)

Cardinals (C-Mart)

Cubs (Hendricks)

Pirates (Taillon)

Reds (S. Gray)

D'Backs (Bumgarner)

Who do you target?

Braves are in the next tier down, IMO.

Out of that list, I target Colorado every time. They're a dumb FO, so Marquez and Gray might be had for not nearly what one would think.

"Watch Ross Atkins be the ultimate alpha and wait for Springer AND Bauer to fall into our laps".

Atkins an Alpha, LOL.

Signing Springer is pretty alpha

Trevor Bauer to go!

Good question Jim...

I think Kendrick might be best cost vs reward. Tailion and a few more from the Pirates.

I think Gray from the Reds might cost too much. Not interested in Gray from Colorado.

I might try targeting a few younger just feet wet or near MLB ready the next tier down in orgs like Miami, KC, Cleveland, SD, Pirates.. I think Miami and KC have some surplus I like.. In other words, instead of using an LGR jr to get one SP, package him and get two or three lesser guys who are near MLB ready or have dipped their toes.
