Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 Baseball. Can’t believe people stop watching once the jays are eliminated. Still lots of great ball to watch!
EdwinsParrot Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 No point in dwelling on it now. Team is still very young and they still got here in a short season. Lots and lots of things to improve on though no doubt.
Ray Verified Member Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 This Rays team just feels like they have an air about them. I could definitely seem them going all the way.
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 Same team structure relying on the long ball to score the runs the 2016 and 2017 teams were structured in the same way with probably more pop in the line up than this one. The end results were the same when it come to the playoffs you need good pitching solid defense and timely hitting and this team couldn't deliver when they need to change their game to the short ball.

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 I agreed with pretty much everything tabby said. Scary
Dokken Verified Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 This Rays team just feels like they have an air about them. I could definitely seem them going all the way. could do it - they are solid all the way around. But I always hate teams that beat out my team in the playoffs, so I could almost see myself hoping the Damn Yankees knock them out (assuming Yanks advance). If it's Cleveland, then no doubt I will be hoping for them over the Rays.

And the Rays deserve it for what they've done in this truncated season. 2nd best team in MLB behind the Dodgers.

This is pretty silly. What is "short ball" anyway? Good young core. Young pitching is closer then anyone thinks (Manoah and Richardson would be knocking on the door if there was a minor league season). Nate Pearson has as good of an arm as anyone. And when the time comes in the next couple of years in a key playoff game with everything on the line and only one small move needed to move the critical run into scoring position... I have no doubt we have a manager with the balls to call for the bunt against all sabermetric ******** wisdom
TheDragon Verified Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 You're reaching man, not sure how Toronto would do against the Indians staff. Likely not well. I dont think it would matter, it's the playoffs its going to be anyway. Game 1 was winnable, but it's a young team. I'm sure you both know I'm just biTCHin'
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 I hope Ryu is actually fine. Apparently he had a sore are affter the last regular season start? And his mph down today.

Personally, not much to root for though. I would have rooted for the Twins + Donaldson but they out / he's out. Next I'll root for the Braves because I like Freeman and he's a Canadian boi... after thay maybe the Brewers just because they the under dogs.

So is your thinking that if the team that beat out the Jays does well in subsequent round(s), it makes the Jays look less bad for being pounded by them? I have definitely had that thinking in the past but my resentment usually wins out. The part that pisses me off in these 2 games is the better team got pretty much all the bounces (BABIP was way in their favor with lots of s***** hits). But our guys also beat themselves (run scored on WP / inability to block yesterday, pitiful hanging slider from Cole against Margot, and then there was poor Bo today).....

His mom is Canadian but he is born and raised in USA. He is not a Canadian citizen unless he applied for citizenship born abroad. Vlad is different. Born in Canada so he is a citizen.

I thought this because he was on the Canadian WBC team a while ago... now I realize how loosey goosey those nationality rules are
Dokken Verified Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 Oh darp... I thought this because he was on the Canadian WBC team a while ago... now I realize how loosey goosey those nationality rules are Well like I said, his mom is Canadian so he could apply and receive Canadian citizenship (along with paying the Canadian government a boatload of money to process the application - it's pretty much a 99.9 % certainty it goes through - as far as I know there is no age cutoff). So he is sort of Canadian and yes he is a good dude for how he went out of his way to play for our WBC team. Total class act.

He also chooses to play for Team Canada internationally.
Dokken Verified Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 (edited) Both of his parents are Canadian and he is a Canadian citizen. He also chooses to play for Team Canada internationally. OK seems you are right both parents born in Canada. He specifically said he chose to play for Canada in honor of his Canadian mother, who died when he was only 10 years old. But he is born and raised in California. As I said, he is 'eligible' to apply for Canadian citizenship by having at least one Canadian citizen parent. Wikipedia says he 'carries dual citizenship' so may have applied and received the Canadian born abroad status. I know the drill: my wife and I are both born and raised Canadians with 2 kids born and raised in the USA. We decided not to pay the ridiculous fee (about 400 bucks per application 10 years ago). For a Freddie Freeman, that is pocket change. https://twitter.com/FreddieFreeman5/status/829502282060414977/photo/1 ETA: Mike Soroka who in the words of the legendary Don Cherry is "good Western Canadian boy" is our best player in MLB right now. Freeman is not a 'real Canadian' having grown up in Kalifornia - regardless of official citizenship status. Speaking of which, Cleveland now has both young Quantrill and Josh Naylor (went 4 for 4 in game 1 and then a 2 RBI double in game2). Cleveland is seriously challenging Atlanta for 'Canadian content' ! Edited October 1, 2020 by Dokken

glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 Personally, not much to root for though. . At the risk of people throwing s*** at me, I'm rooting for Yankees/Astros ALCS (biggest franchise in the sport versus biggest villain in the sport), and Dodgers/whoever. The best chance for baseball not to be ignored by mainstream sports media over the next month is to have at least those three teams in the final 4. Then obviously, Yankees/Dodgers in the WS. That's my "best for baseball" rooting interest. In terms of which team I actually like from a player standpoint, I'd root for the White Sox and Padres, though I don't expect either team (the Pads possibly without Lamet and Clev) going that far.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 In Dokken's defense Windsor really shouldn't count as Canada. Yeah, that's some scary shithole. Worked their one summer, feel bad for the seniors there.

My wife grew up 10 miles from the US border, although that was Montana/Alberta, not Windsor/Sewer (aka Detroit). More importantly, is there any doubt of my assertion that Calgary's own Mike Soroka is our best Canuck in the MLB currently (Joey is getting a little long in the tooth)!? ETA: I will take that non-response by any of you Southern Ontario boys as a begrudging YES, LOL Edited October 1, 2020 by Dokken

Dokken Verified Member Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 Soraka died buddy, Votto lives!!! LOL, thanks for the laugh. Mikey is only 23 years old and is already a beast at the MLB level after having come up with very questionable regular competition other than what he experienced with the national junior team (he was drafted out of Calgary at the high school level). You really think a young guy like that will not come back from the Achilles injury? If so, please tell the ancient Adam Wainwright about the impossibility of such a return. This guy might be the best thing we have seen since Fergie (I was too young to actually see Fergie, but still).

I know Missisauga's Pompey crashed and burned but you still have Naylor (also Missisauga) and Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) to root for along with the ancient Joey "I don't care about Canadian baseball" Votto! https://canoe.com/sports/baseball/reds-toronto-born-votto-i-dont-care-about-canadian-baseball
