Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 Kirk will be my science experiment. We have (at least) two obese players on the team now. One is a trust fund baby who's career success will have little to no impact on his quality of life. The other (presumably) doesn't. Will the one who comes from nothing have the internal drive to improve his habits and transform his body as required to get the absolute out of his career? Will the trust fund baby fail to reach his potential? Or will their families financial situation play little to no part in all of this. Time will tell. Interesting. Vlad also got a 4 million bonus. Kirk $7500 https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-alejandro-kirk-unique-catching-prospect-breaks-mould/ Holy crap. I mean on the other hand Biggio is in same situation as Vlad and seems to be the definition of hard work... and if Biggio failed it wouldn't even really be a huge black mark. It's like he can't hit fastball, Kieth Law hates him, he's suppose to fail, so when he fails he just goes on to coaching, and everyone says how great it is that Biggio worked hard as hell to hit .200 without being able to hit a fastball and he coaches or something. Biggio fails - nothing. Kieth law gets a medal. Biggio gets a medal for trying hard. Biggio coaches or something. Vladdy fails - nothing financially but goes down as biggest bust of all time. Kirk fails - loses millions, changes his life completely.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 I've been following Kirk for a couple of years. I love his story. I was semi-shocked but extremely happy he was called up. From what I have read, he has had a MLB-ready bat for a while. I think this was a ballsy move, and unlike most this FO makes. Very impressed they are taking this chance. Even just for this one weird season, if they end up starting him in the minors next year.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2020 Author Posted September 13, 2020 Was fun to watch him last night. Butchered frame on a couple pitches and that Dolis wild pitch was a poor block. Overall though he looked good at the plate and behind it. Media going bezerk. Need to remember JPA hit 2 HRS in his first MLB I think. Before we declare Kirk to be the next Pudge let’s see some more. Whoa whoa How dare you compare El Capitan to JP Arencibia
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 Kirk not starting today. Bichette at DH and Jansen catching for Ryu
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 Kirk not starting today. Bichette at DH and Jansen catching for Ryu "Day game after a night game", plus I mean, Jansen is still the starting catcher...
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 "Day game after a night game", plus I mean, Jansen is still the starting catcher... Yeah i’ve got no complaints, just thought the info belonged in this thread
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Kirk should be starting EVERY game! He did a great job behind the plate as well (besides the passed ball but that was kind of on Dolis too).
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2020 Author Posted September 14, 2020 "Day game after a night game", plus I mean, Jansen is still the starting catcher... Yeah, his 30mph screamer over a drawn in infield bought him some more time, I think, but El Capitan is coming.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Whoa whoa How dare you compare El Capitan to JP Arencibia Couldn't be to more opposite catching prospects physically or stats wise.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 Just based on how he looks, Dioner Navarro is probably a decent comparison. Navarro was a top prospect once upon a time with good minor league numbers at a very young age. He also reached the bigs at 21, though that was after stints in AA/AAA. Hopefully, Kirk ends up having a better career, especially on the defensive end where Dinner was very bad.

Then I checked, 1009 games played. Exactly 0.0 WAR That's actually incredibly impressive, he was EXACTLY replacement level over his career.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 How about Bengie Molina? Willians Astudillo? Curtis Thigpen? Got anymore comps of despair? Dinner is a disgusting comparison based on how he turned out, but there are some similarities there. Like I said, just comparing how they look mostly, and skill set, but hopefully Kirk has a much better career. Man, I thought in my head "Navarro wasn't great, but he had a productive career". Then I checked, 1009 games played. Exactly 0.0 WAR That's actually incredibly impressive, he was EXACTLY replacement level over his career. Yeah I think once Fangraphs started incorporating framing numbers, Navarro's value torpedoed. He went from an average player to replacement level (or below replacement level) in a hurry.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 All you have to do with Kirk is watch his lower half when he made his first hit. Fat guys aren't suppose to be that flexible or athletic. He's a bit of circus freak really. I do hope he drops a few pounds in the off season. I'm just happy for this kid financially. In the article about him in spring it said he got a 30K signing bonus, but he only received 7.5K. He's going to get about 60K playing in September and potentially a lot more in the playoffs. Being the short fat kid with no money in your pocket coming up to a big league club for the playoff push with a bunch of rich guys with ego's would be very intimidating. He's lucky the Jays are a young team almost devoid of ego's. His journey would be a lot tougher with a lot of other clubs.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 How about Bengie Molina? Willians Astudillo? Curtis Thigpen? Got anymore comps of despair? It's almost impossible to find a comparable for him. Most guys that can get on base at a .420 clip in the low minors don't play catcher. And if they do they are sometimes uncatchered (Biggio, Delgado). Take Joe Mauer and make him a 5 foot 8 mexican... what would happen?? He'd probably be on the radar a couple of years late, but other than that he'd be Joe Mauer in the minors and force himself to the majors anyway. What would happen after that?? How the hell would I know. Not sure there has ever been a 5' 8" 260 pound catcher who gets on base at .420 in the low minors.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Is there a pic of Alejandro Kirk wearing a captains Starfleet uniform? If not, why?
devo Verified Member Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Not to get ahead of ourselves but could Kirk be a unique early extension candidate? Similar to what the Royals did with Sal Perez during his rookie season. 6 years, $12-14 million or so? Low risk/high reward for the Jays and Kirk's family gets life changing money.

Would do it in a heartbeat on the condition that he cut some weight by ST.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Would do it in a heartbeat on the condition that he cut some weight by ST. f*** you. He's got to this point with the weight. Let the boy eat!
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 Would do it in a heartbeat on the condition that he cut some weight by ST. I would give him 7 years 14 million. With a 5 million dollar bonus for Kirk each year Vladdy G. JR, get's a .900+ OPS That way Kirk has incentive to work with Vladdy to get his hitting going They can both be fat as f*** if they can figure out a way to get their fat hips rotated properly and the ball in the air. Or if it is easier they can go on weight loss together and help each other out with that.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2020 Author Posted September 15, 2020 Would also be life changing money for the Arby's down the street. You're lucky the leadership of this forum are cowards or I would be handing you out some bans

AND he's coming up from A ball, so he wasn't even getting an AAA salary before this. Probably like $50 a month and anything he could find in the hotel couch.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2020 Author Posted September 22, 2020 Yet another base clogger. Jays gonna be setting new double play records soon. Only for the clubhouse chefs. Can't be bothered to care about the service clock on a dude who is morbidly obese. Hey look, he might be good for a while but he'll probably die before he reaches UFA. lol Elite defensive catcher Danny Jansen isn't throwing out runners this year but Kirk of all people will fix that problem. There will be no passed balls, for sure. He's definitely in a high risk category when it comes to COVID. I think moving him would be the bigger issue... Was fun to watch him last night. Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2020 Author Posted September 22, 2020 Pudge Rodriguez? Who's that. I've never heard of him and never used him as a comp for Kirk repeatedly for years
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 Haha Grichuk just publicly fat shaming Kirk. I'm a believer man
