Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 I would give up Kloffenstein in a heart beat for Bauer.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 This FO won't. Nor should they. I think they'd consider it. I mean, the Reds aren't dealing Bauer for anything less than a prospect like that. The might even want more.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 My god he's 2 to 3 years away. We have 4 or 5 pitching prospects ahead of him. We have 35 million in payroll committed to 2022. Bauer gives you a chance to win this year! Having Bauer gives us the inside track on signing him next year. We have tons of payroll. Your prospect love is sickening. Prospects are cool, parades are cooler. We're not talking about a sure fire can't miss prospect. If you're not willing to give up a Kloffenstein, you won't ever give up a prospect. The thing is that if Kloff is the best offer there are teams which will top it. We are not in a position to get into bidding wars. I don't disagree that prospects are overvalued...but there are other teams to consider here (Including Cinci who would likely not make the deal) If you believe that Bauer makes us a contender, what does he make the Yankees? The Royals did it so why not us is hopefully not the way this F.O. works

Kloff for 5 or 6 starts from Bauer in COVID year with the Jays competing against 15 other teams for the championship, if they make the playoffs, with most of those teams clearly superior to the Jays, is a bad use of prospect capital. Inside track on resigning him? That is bogus thinking. Bauer already said he is going to the free agent market.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 I'd rather overpay for Bauer in free agency than trade value for him now (4 weeks of control) and potentially lose him for nothing.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 Definitely not the time to trade for Bauer, we're not even remotely good enough for that to make sense. Marginal upgrades like Walker is fine for the next 4 weeks.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 Normally I'm against giving up good prospects for rentals. But, this has been an average team this year that is almost certain to go to the playoffs. The most likely outcome is that they make the playoffs in 2020 and don't make the playoffs in 2021 when things go back to normal. It's very, very tempting to go pair Bauer with Ryu and go in guns blazing with maybe the best 1-2 starting pitching punch in baseball. I think I'd give up Kloffenstein for Bauer.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 The Jays are in on Bauer? I'd be shocked if they were.

Wouldn’t surprise me if expanded playoffs stays next year (too much money involved and no guarantee fans will be allowed back at full capacity by next April). Even if it isn’t there next year and it’s back to the normal playoff format, I think the Jays can jump from .500ish team (where they are now) to a playoff contender with the right moves. Yes there’s a strong chance the Jays make it this year and Bauer/Ryu in a 3 game series gives us a shot to advance but I don’t think the team is ready for that step yet. If Bauer were locked up for at least another year, then that changes things.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 The only team with the inside track on Bauer is the team that lets him pitch every 4th day. Based on our rotation - he could start pitching every 4th day immediately.

Flip Shaw and a low level prospect for an expiring Cabrera and our lineup looks dangerous with a bullpen that’s pitching pretty good. Now if police officers in the states can’t stop shooting unarmed black people, maybe we shouldn’t do anything because the season might get cancelled. Edited August 27, 2020 by saskjayfan

I’d rather give up SWR and get 2 years of Clevinger and help recruit Trevor Bauer in November.

The way to get Bauer is offering him the largest 1 year contract in MLB history.
Ray Verified Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 Any guesses? Will Robertson or Kevin Smith maybe?
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 Any guesses? This scares me. Please not my boys Otto or Eric. Thanks.

I didn't say Bauer would sign an extension without going to free agency. I said we'd have an inside track, because if he enjoyed the club he'd entertain an offer from us. We should have as much money as anyone to spend on Bauer next year. He's only taking one year deals anyways!

Did anyone think signing Philip Clarke helps sell Toronto to Austin Martin? Groshans sold and took less salary for Kloff? Stuff happens. Even if the recruitment fails you still have Clevinger, that’s not bad.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 Will Robertson or Kevin Smith maybe? I thought Smith was part of the 60 man roster/taxi squad, but if he's not, then he's a good guess.
Ray Verified Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 I thought Smith was part of the 60 man roster/taxi squad, but if he's not, then he's a good guess. You may be right. Griffin Conine could also be a possibility.

Anyway, we don't want to feel like the frigging Mets who got f*** all from Stroman for SWR and Kay.

Marginal upgrades like Walker is fine for the next 4 weeks. Agree 100%. This year isn't the time to trade our top prospects. Anyone here honestly think that we will go far in the playoffs? If you watched all our games so far and the blunders they have made you know they need to get a lot better. They are young and foolish in many of their decisions and Montoyo is the worst manager who belongs in a low level minors if even that. I really hope they do well and I cheer for them every game, but I am witnessing errors being made that are not even acceptable in the minors.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 Pitch mix similar to Tanaka according to Fangraphs. Secondaries are a bit underwhelming and FB has ticked down, but still very effective and throw strikes.

If Walker can stay healthy and have effective secondaries, a good target for 2021 and possible velo uptick.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 If the Jays actually gave up a top 30 prospect, something Atkins never does, for a 1 month rental, then maybe they are planning on trying to bring him back next year. It takes a while after TJS to come back strong. This is Walker's first season back, and even this is a truncated one. Maybe they see this as more than a rental.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 The last time a Toronto sports franchise traded away a best friend, the Raptors won a championship! True. But they were already on the cusp of being a championship calibre team. They just needed that one piece to get them there. When the Jays are right on the cusp then I have no trouble dealing a solid spec for a rental, but no chance do I do it to try and give myself a boost to scrape into the playoffs.
