Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 I'm not entirely convinced the Jays hitting lab has reached the same level as more established outfits like Driveline as we really haven't seen a lot of big time success stories yet. That's obscure with no backing at all, I'm sure they have the same if not better data. The resources make sense.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 When the Angles lose Ohtani this off-season they will be wanting a "star" to replace him to play alongside of Trout. Perfect time to dangle Vlad to them. Something like Vlad and Kirk for Detmers, Soriano, and O'Hoppe sounds good.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Definitely send him to Driveline Yep, he absolutely needs an overhaul on his swing.

Then the money freed by Chapman, Kiermaier, and Merrifield to sign Bellinger! Next year lineup: Schneider Bo Ohtani Bellinger Jansen Barger Springer Horwitz Varsho Rotation: Ohtani Gausman Berrios Bassitt Kikuchi/Manoah/Detmers Trade Vlad to the angels now!
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 Just imagine if Vlad spend an offseason working at somewhere like Driveline. He is one of baseball's most physically gifted hitters and something like this could be the key to unlocking all of that potential for good. Instead he'll spend the offseason in the DR with his 'boys' who just tell him that he's great and (probably) mooch off his fame and fortune. He'll post some videos playing home run derby in the sandlot while crushing grandma's home cooking. Seems increasingly unlikely he will put in the work necessary to be the best player he can be and chase a HOF career. Sad, but teams can't force him to want to be good.
BlueBaller Verified Member Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 Guys he was overfed as a child. He's always been fat, and always will be fat.

I would change that last word to “potentially an all time great” . He’s already good.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 I would change that last word to “potentially an all time great” . He’s already good. He's replacement level right now, he was good last year. He's combined historically great seasons (if you include his minor league seasons) with replacement level ones, only been 'good' one year (age 23). 18 - historic great 19 - historic great, greatest minor league hitter ever, greatest Jays prospect ever 20 - replacement level 21 - replacement level 22 - historic all time great age 22 season setting age homerun record and challenging for triple crown 23 - good 24 - replacement level
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 This is why the Vlad thing is so f***ing frustrating. Guys go up and down. Sometimes it's up to guys themselves to figure it out, keep in shape, work on their swing in the off season, blah, blah, blah. What we have here is a guy who has a historic difference between his floor and his ceiling. And if we assume (which is reasonable) that both his floor and his ceiling are a bit worse and better than what we have seen so far we have this A player whos 1. Floor is below replacement level .250 hitter with 19 homers and -1 WAR 2. Ceiling is an improvement on 2021. If a guy can hit 48 homers and challenge for the triple crown 22 it is reasonable to put his ceiling at triple crown with 50+ homers. So we have one of the largest differences between floor and ceiling ever, and the organization should have done everything to get him closer to the ceiling... hire 20 chefs, 20 trainers, 20 line-drive swing specialist, 20 mental coaches, 20 cheer leaders... they should have done whatever it takes to keep him at 2017/2018/2021 level
wamco Verified Member Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 If we’re frustrated, can you imagine how frustrated Atkins must be? His job is alot more secure when vlad is a beast.
Pat Murray Verified Member Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 Trade him while he's still worth something. Guy will never grow up. The veterans like Merifield and Belt must shake their heads. Not enough mustard in TO to cover that hot dog.

Omar Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 I would trade Vladdy for Uncle Rico just for his arm.
jaysthebest Verified Member Posted August 19, 2023 Posted August 19, 2023 Send this fat guy to AAA ball please... Tonight's game demonstrated his lack of offense and defense. We shouldn't waste the 3rd batting order for Vlad Sr's obese son anymore.

Time to move off of Fatty G and try a new face. Horwitz could be worse but will cost league minimum.

jaysthebest Verified Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 This fat kid is the most disappointing hyped prospect in the history of baseball. He is not good at both offense and defense. I'm so glad he turned down the extension the team offered before the season started.
Nursehoneybadger Verified Member Posted August 24, 2023 Posted August 24, 2023 id happily give him a chance to prove himself, earn a 3/50 if he doesn't quit after next year

deanmike Verified Member Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 (edited) Vlad Sr's obese son since returning from his wrist injury on May 9th: -0.3 fWAR, only 102 wRC+ as a 1B/DH in 395 PA. Only other negative fWAR player during that time frame has been Espinal who's scrub ass is rightfully glued to the bench now that Bo is back. The obese son of Vlad Sr IMO should be looking at the same treatment down the stretch. My belief is it's only his 2021 season that is keeping him in the lineup right now. His defense at 1B has also sadly/hilariously fallen off a cliff due to his obesity. Let's compare the 3 players who have played 1B for the Jays this season. Vlad: 0.3 fWAR in 422 PA Belt: 1.1 fWAR in 115 PA Biggio: 0.3 fWAR in 26 PA Vlad at DH: 0.3 fWAR in 121 PA Biggio and Belt should be the main 1B/DH combo right now and Vlad should only platoon vs LHP, which would open up more deserved playing time for Schneider at 2B as well. The literal negative impact of Vlad Sr's obese and probably still injured son must be limited if the playoffs are to be easily made. Edited August 26, 2023 by deanmike
