Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 I brought up Domingo Martinez in another thread. He is the guy who didn't even get a chance at a career because Cito (great manager, everyone loves him) had to play a 35 year old .200 hitting Tabby. Domingo Martinez 1st 2 years - 0.3 WAR in 22 at bats. Old Pat Tabler 2 year WAR - -1.2 (that is negative 1.2) Vladdy 2 year WAR - 0.4 So at least Vladdy is above replacement for his career still and ahead of old Pat Tabler, though there is a chance Domingo Martinez' first 2 year WAR, will be ahead of Vladdy Jrs 1st two year WAR, if Vladdy continues slumping over the next 2 weeks.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 I'm just going to assume Bo Bichette was the number 1 generational son of major leaguer prospect. Hopefully Vlad can put together a decent season soon so we can trade his fatass for something good.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 And just for the record. I love Vladdy, I loved having the greatest prospect ever, I was more excited about him then any prospect ever and my comments are just my way of expressing my profound confusion at how the greatest hitting prospect ever hit's like Billy Mckinney. I guess it's because he is only 21 and very, very soon he will leave Billy Mckinney in the rear view mirror and be hitting .300 .400 .550... right?? I think. I hope.

I have no doubt he will put up David Ortiz numbers for the Red Sox, and kind of still assume he will figure it out here. Today's ranting was just triggered because I stopped looking at his stat line for a week. 1 week ago check bbref Vladdy - .265 .340 .460 - hmmmm... OK. Still get that he is only 21. really not bad for a 21 year old, and could look good with a hot finish. I'll stop checking his stats every at bat. today - bbref Vladdy - .245 .325 .420 - WHAT THE f*** DID YOU DO THIS WEEK!! I look away for a second and the greatest hitting prospect ever is putting up BIlly Mckinney stats. Got a little triggerred by that.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 It's not the hitting that pisses me off (I think he will figure that out). It's the terrible baseball IQ he has when not hitting. I hope some more experience and the coaching staff can help.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 WRC+ 103 so pretty much a league average hitter this year Exactly 0.0 WAR because of his other shortcomings

I don't think he'll ever have the plate discipline to be a .400 OBP guy, if he hits his prime his line probably looks more like .300/.350/.600 More in line with what Teoscar is doing right now. Even that seems unrealistic at this point, wouldn't be surprised if he has more of a Miguel Sano type of career.

keggy Verified Member Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 In all fairness, Miggy was terrible in the OF and short lived. Vlad mentioned his conditioning needed to be better the other day, I thought it was good of him to admit the covid period he wasn't doing what he should and eat right. The left is Cabrera at 20 years of age as the best young player in baseball. On the right is Cabrera at 37 years of age, playing at replacement level and arguably the biggest albatross in baseball. Guerrero is 21, which one does he look closer to?

We all expect that Cabrera got his birth certificate at the same place Pujols did right? He's probably already 40 years old. He did completely fall off a cliff though. If he continues to post negatives WAR's for the next year or so, Scott Rolen may actually pass him for career WAR....which is kind of crazy.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 That is a great picture
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 If Vlad does bust, at least it will reaffirm a very important lesson: never rely on fat people.

Pearson looks like s***. Manoahs got arm trouble already. Tellez stepped on a "soft spot" on the ground and f***ed up his knee. f*** Fatties!

Tellez stepped on a "soft spot" on the ground and f***ed up his knee. f*** Fatties! I blame Alex Anthopoulos for all of this. I can't find anthopoulosfatwaddle.gif, but he set the tone years ago that obesity was acceptable even at the highest levels of the org, and we're still feeling the effects. Thankfully, Mark Shapiro seems like the kind of guy who would have bullied soft-bodies in high school, so I'm sure he's taken steps to ensure proper shaming of professional athletes with Rosie O'Donnell's physique. Culture changes take time.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 If anything, Atkins is stockpiling fatties. The fatter, the better. Maybe Atkins was a bully in school and tormented the obese kids. Now he's trying to make amends by giving them ample opportunity to show that they're real people too.

Now he's trying to make amends by giving them ample opportunity to show that they're real people too. The only explanation is that they were all travelling on a bus together for a game and accidently ran over an old gypsy's wife. He then touched all their faces saying "Fatter" putting a lifelong curse on them.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 10, 2020 Posted September 10, 2020 The good news is the team is playing great and scoring runs without a large contribution from Vladdy Jr and with Bichette not even playing Imagine if Vlad gets even 30% better and Bichette comes back and rakes again next year

The problem with Vlad is that aside from the bat, he brings nothing else to the table. Overweight, bad base running, no defensive value, lower-than-expected baseball IQ, etc. The one positive is that once he does figure it out with the bat, he's going to be a beast, but until then it's basically like having Kendrys in the lineup.

One of the great things about baseball is all the young franchise changing players that are thriving in their early 20s. So amazing to hear what some franchises get to experience. https://www.mlb.com/news/young-mvp-award-contenders-for-2020 It is such a joy for these fanbases to have young legends to follow, there is nothing like it. In 2020 the game is healthy and thriving, with fun young players for people to follow and cheer for. A top prospect bust is so devestating for fans. Good to see the other top prospects are instant Mantle, and the pain we feel with Vlad happens to no one else

Vlad was supposed to be THE most surefire prospect since Harper, but look where we are.

Vlad was supposed to be THE most surefire prospect since Harper, but look where we are. Hit the nail on the head. That said - here is how I've rationalized it. We had 2 stud prospects coming up to the majors. Vlad and Bo. Then we had Cavan who put himself on the prospect map after changing his approach and raking in 2018...but he was anything but a sure thing. Bo has become what we hoped Vlad would be.....he's a young superstar Cavan has become what we hoped Bo would be.....he's a young star Vlad has become what we probably could have expected from Cavan.....young, but still figuring it out. If you close your eyes and change the names - the results aren't far off from where my expectations were in early 2019.....and there's obviously still a chance that Vlad figures it out and becomes Miggy/Ortiz/Fielder

Of course - I'd like to see Jansen start hitting too. The good news is Teo, LGJ & Tellez all look like they might be legit pieces too.....it's still super early, but even Fisher is showing signs of life.

The good news is Teo, LGJ & Tellez all look like they might be legit pieces too.....it's still super early, but even Fisher is showing signs of life. Covid ball low sample size is just a recipe for deception. Even the 60 games isn't enough, especially since it is like 30 games if you get an injury. Like Randall Grichuk has completely regressed to 2018 Randall Grichuk, which is fine, that's a winning piece if he isn't one of the top 4 pieces. Hernandez (down), Vladdy (up), Jansen (up), would all normalize a bit over 160... I think it is pretty possible Vlad will look like the worst failure of all time if he slumps the next 2 weeks (.220 .300 .390 or something), could look fine if he heats up (.270, .340 .470). Not a huge deal either way, but it will be in the books, and hopefully the team makes sure he gets his head right, and is ready for 600 outstanding plate appearances next year. When they've all had a full year we can have some opinions.
