A "strained forearm" is usually the precursor to, "oh s***, I need to be grafted a new UCL!"

Puntoyo might be exactly what we need to get the Kumar Rocker sweepstakes.

Man, Buntoyo really didn't help Giles' career at all. Went on the DL in 2019, came back, pitched 3 days in a row shortly after that, then went on the DL again (Jays couldn't trade him), and now waits for Giles' arm to basically fall out of the socket before taking him out of a game, leading to this.

I'm setting the over/under for number of pitchers used in tonight's game at 6.5. I'm also taking the over.

Hope you didn't make any bets

Take the decimal out. The Jays will use 65 pitchers tonight.

can someone fill me in as to why so many people hate this guy? i know managers typically get the blame for blown games but man there is a lot of hate directed against this guy

Watch a couple of games. It will be clear in short order.

Another game thrown away by Montoyo. I don't get how you can be given a 30 man roster and still run out of pitchers?

I think what scares me is that Shatkins handpicked this guy. He either lied in the job interview, or this is what the front office wanted. I'm not sure which is worse.

I think he was their second choice. I remember listening to a podcast and Davidi said they wanted Baldelli but Minnesota got him. Regardless though this is the guy they went with over Gibby and he looks a lot worse.

We can only pray Shatkins has found out quickly that Montoyo is not good at this job. I’m sure they will just leave him in place for this weird ass season. But by the time the winter innings rolls around I’m sure will be in the market for a new skipper.

I'm not

If there's one thing Atkins is not, it's being decisive.

I think once Lindor leaves Cleveland. Francona will become available. Mark Shapiro is currently dreaming of this reality.

Francona is probably horribly overrated, like Joe Girardi or Joe Torre

Also Montoyo: "Hey get Hatch and Kay both up even though any situation they come in now will be a lost cause anyways"

Also Fisher should have been gone first pitch, if he's so worried about distracting Teoscar (who stared at two meatballs anyway) TELL HIM before he goes up to bat that Fisher is moving first pitch. Unbelievable.

Enjoy.

"Because I simply cannot let a starter go more than 5 innings, and even that causes me physical pain. Gotta get those starters outta there after 40 pitches!"

Ken Giles leaves the game one or two batters earlier it's a jays win. Not NIL. Giles might end up having tommy john due to his incompetence. NOT NIL.

Enjoy.

Are pitchers just not allowed to go back to back days? Surely Font was available for an inning.

Enjoy.

I'm sure that statement is going to help him gain confidence.

Remember when he said good things about Sam Gaviglio and people said "he had to say that to not trash his player"?

Welllllll........

He also very clearly was not the only one left.

I can handle the bullpen shenanigans since the season is young and the starters are still on lower pitch counts, but the in-game strategy is f***ing indefensible. Fisher had a free 90 feet available to him, there is basically no way the Nationals would have even thrown through to second base as there was a very fast runner at third base already. And the two strike bunt is just ridiculous, it would be interesting to see how much these two decisions lowered the Jays run expectation in the 8th inning last night.

After Alford stole 2nd they had about a 75% win expectancy.

The Espinal strikeout lowered it to 65.5%. Hard to say how much the bunt decision itself lowered run expectancy; Espinal might have whiffed even if swinging away.

After Fisher walked they had a 75% win expectancy again.

RE with 1st and 3rd one out is about 1.140

RE with 2nd and 3rd one out is about 1.352

Not only is the total RE higher with him on 2nd, the expectancy of getting one run is also probably higher as the double play is removed. So, if Fisher indeed has a 100% chance to get to 2nd they certainly have up a some odds of taking the lead.

Honestly, I think a really sharp manager pinch hits for Espinal in that inning. I think he had already K'd hopelessly against Scherzer twice. McGuire was the only one on the bench IIRC. It's awkward, sure, and most managers wouldn't do it, but you're really just taking about Drury at SS, Vlad at 3B, and Reese or Jansen at 1st, if they take the lead maybe just for one half inning. Espinal's naked projection is to hit .243/.288 while McGuire's is to hit .241/.300, but when you factor in handedness you're probably looking at like a .050 expected AVG/OBP split vs. Scherzer.

Or Espinal was viewed as a better bet to bunt Alford over than McGuire. Supposedly Montoya was hired as manager for a rebuilding club based on his supposed strength in player development. Maybe he is good at that, but his in-game management is questionable.
