Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 6, 2020 Posted October 6, 2020 Has to be his wanking arm Hah... PHILADELPHIA (AP) Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow last week and the team says he's expected to return to play in four to six months. Hoskins injured his ulnar collateral ligament when his non-throwing arm collided with a baserunner on Sept. 12 against Miami. Dr. Steve Cohen performed the surgery on Friday. Pitchers typically need several months longer to recover.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 I think everyone expects some form of expanded playoffs to stick around long term, even if it is 12 or 14 teams instead of 16, so good to see that they got pretty decent numbers out of it despite early timeslots, overlapping games, stiff competition, and ESPN barely putting any effort into promoting it. Of course, the Jays/Rays did terribly on TBS, but every Jays series is going to do bad in the States since they don't count Canadian viewers, and no one wants to watch the Rays in any country.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 On one hand I hate expanded playoffs but on the other hand I don't ever want to go through 15 years of fandom only seeing the Jays make the playoffs twice again.

Hentgen won a Cy Young on pitches like that. He'd start the game on the corners, and by the 6th or 7th inning he was getting strikes in the opposite batter's box.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 look how far away Fred McGriff stands...he'd need a 48" bat to hit some of those pitches. Yep. Like I said, Hentgen used to get those calls all the time. It was the somewhat accepted strike zone back then. Buckner is just flat out bad in any era though.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 Bauer having fun tonight on twitter... lol
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 This dude will never sign a multi-year deal. You know what's more important to Bauer than money? The ability to mouth off on Twitter for two months every off-season before he signs a contract and is somewhat beholden to the will of his employer.

I get the feeling somebody will make him an offer with so many zeros attached that he can't refuse.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 While I wouldn't recommend it if I were Bauer's agent, I hope he stays true to the 'one year deal' strategy. If he stays healthy, that could actually optimize how much money he makes short term, similar to a NBA player. Higher AAV for a short deal rather than lower AAV for a 'set for life' contract. It would go against what every top level baseball player does nowadays. He wouldn't have the security, and one injury will basically destroy his earning potential, but it's the ultimate bet on yourself move.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 Bauer having fun tonight on twitter... lol To me, he is trying to entice the Yankees to get in a bidding war with the Padres to drive the price up. If I were starting pitcher, especially taking on short contracts, I would much rather pitch in San Diego then the AL East. I also think Bauer is more an San Diego vibe kinda guy.. Or, he might just be talking smack with no strategic significance..
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 I kinda hope Bauer sticks to his word and keeps going on 1-year contracts. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. If he stays healthy he could make a lot more money. He'd also theoretically always be on a championship caliber team.

He knows that even he has a high injury risk.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 What I learned from the last several posts is that poor people on the internet have a much different outlook on life than rich people on the internet. Secure his earnings potential? How many more drones does this guy need to buy? Sure, for boring baseball players who care just about money and maybe winning a long term deal makes sense. Bauer is primarily driven by ego and his unrestricted ability to troll losers. He probably wants to keep 2024 open in case he decides to run for GOP Presidential nomination. All that stuff is impacted by signing a long term deal. Hold on, I guess he has to wait until 2028 to run for President. He falls just short of the 35 minimum age in 2024. But the feeding his ego and trolling losers part still applies.

I agree but the ONLY possible way he would take the 1year deal is if he got like a $150m policy through Loyds of London or something. Can’t imagine what that’d run
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 I think it was all BS and he's too smart to do that. He knows that even he has a high injury risk. I believe so too. But there's still that chance. What could he get on a 1 year deal? 50M+ could be a possibility. Cole/Scherzer/Greinke/Strasburg are the current top earners at about 36M or just under. That's about 1.125M per game. Bauer wants to pitch every 4th day instead of 5th, so roughly 40 starts a year. If he's looking for a per game basis similar to those guys that puts him at 45M for the year, then tack on an extra 5M since it's a 1 year deal with no long term commitment/risk for the team.

Ironically if I see a post that is someone saying “what’s another $100m if the guy is already set for life” I assume they are a poor person commenting on what they think a rich person should see it as

I think his previous statements about going year to year morph into an early opt out. Maybe he will try to get a long term deal with multiple opt outs... years 2, 4, 6, etc. Anyway, you sound a lot like the socialist fans who complain about player salaries being too high. My experience is that most humans, rich or poor or filthy rich, want to "maximize their earnings potential"
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 My experience is that most humans, rich or poor or filthy rich, want to "maximize their earnings potential" Curt Schilling was a notable example. At least his baseball analysis revenues. Dammit won't you f***s just let my dream of Bauer signing a one year deal with the Jays stay alive? It fits too perfectly for next year but I don't see them spending $200M+ on him especially as a pitcher and especially with a company looking to sell expensive cell phones and TV plans to sensitive crybabies who think they live in a socialist country.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2020 Posted October 8, 2020 While I wouldn't recommend it if I were Bauer's agent Does he even HAVE an agent? I could have sworn I saw somewhere that he represents himself.
