Do we actually believe that this season will happen?

Hard to say. I think we are one serious hospitalization away from all sports shutting down, but if athletes are simply testing positive and being quarantined, then I think every sport will try to work through it.

I'd say 50/50 right now for all sports.

I don't. The US just recorded their highest infection day (I think).

Americans seem to have given up for the most part and will just let the virus run it's course while they go about their normal activities. I think that perceptions will dictate the path of sports more than numbers and facts.

Unless the infection spread is better controlled (wear a mask, FFS), only a matter of time before a MLB player is hospitalized and either dies or comes damn close.

They were talking about this on CNN today, I have my doubts the US is as bad or worse now when this all began and have no leadership to deal with a pandemic. It's going to get worse down there.

IMO it’ll take a player (or possibly coach) dying to cancel the season.

I think we are at a point where someone testing positive, especially before the season starts, is being considered more of a formality. Every sports league is expecting a bunch of positives. The real test will be whether they can prevent as many positive tests during the season.

Good call. I have no idea why we can't just find amusement in something without some raging lunatic calling everyone a racist/sexist/whatever.

Fair enough good sir, I shall attempt to keep the partisan sniping to appropriate venues.

And it's a good thing. My last couple of posts would NOT go over well with the "woke" crowd.

60-man player pools are to be submitted today.

Will be interesting to see who the 20 non-roster players added are, as well as around the league

Pirates RHP Santana banned 80 games for drugs, out this year

Jun 28, 2020

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Edgar Santana will miss all of the abbreviated 2020 season after being suspended 80 games for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

MLB announced Sunday that Santana tested positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance.

The 28-year-old Santana is in the process of a comeback after missing all of the 2019 season following reconstructive surgery on his right elbow in September 2018. Santana is 3-4 with a 3.31 ERA in 88 career games, all with the Pirates. He worked five hitless innings of relief in spring training before the MLB season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington called Santana's suspension "disappointing."

Santana's salary of $581,500 was reduced to $215,370 due to the shortened season, and he will lose all of it. He received a $60,000 salary advance, however, and that money will be repaid to the team from the International Tax Fund.
