Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 My grandma has been in the hospital for a few days. Whenever she manages to wake up, she wants to know the score in the game. They haven't lost since she got here and she is delighted.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 So I read Giles is throwing from 120 feet now, set to do a rehab in Rochester. The swelling from Bo's knee is gone. Things are turning around!

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 You don't believe that do you? I'll admit Spanky, my hate for Vlad is getting deep. Probably a tad unhealthy.

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 For those that missed his debut, Merryweather had a 97-98 MPH FB with multiple secondaries. Flashed a nice 85-87 MPH slider, curveball and changeup.
WILLIEUPSHAW Verified Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 (edited) If that’s the case. They should seriously just punt this season. Just get the highest draft pick possible because this team doesn’t have a chance of winning without Bo. Sadly we don’t even have any veterans with trade value. Possibly Shoemaker if he gets rolling. Probably should keep Shaw because he has another cheap year of control. Yep, it was seeming like the end on this past Sunday. Now 4 days and 5 wins later....... If the 4 veteran SP's can stay healthy and pitch well, the Jays are really in business (like how the starting rotation carried them in 2016). An 8th seed for the post-season is very achievable right now and even more so if/when Giles and Bichette return. Edited August 21, 2020 by WILLIEUPSHAW

WILLIEUPSHAW Verified Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Fangraphs have the Birds at a 51.3% playoff odds. the Jays seem to have a lot more pitching depth than the other fringe teams like O's, ChiSox and Rangers (I may be biased because I am not so familiar with those other teams). I think securing an 8th seed and upset the Bankees in the 1st round would be almost as good as a WS championship at this point!
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 (edited) Unfortunately Jays have too many DH only types with solid bat. Vlad is another, oh wait Vlad is poor in both aspects so never mind. Jays can use Tellez at 1st, Hernandez at DH. And send Fatty down until his launch angle is at least league average. Tellez will be gone before Vlad Guerrero Jr guaranteed that's why they have him in the line up everyday and the reason for that is he's a regular everyday player on the Jays roster. Tellez on the other hand is regarded as a bench player with limited AB Edited August 21, 2020 by EastCoaster

News is a bit slow here in London UK about the Blue Jays, so I only get it from this forum and The Athletic, mostly. What's the vision for Merryweather going forward? High leverage/elite bullpen arm or will they stretch him into a starter in 2021/2022?

Flashed a nice 85-87 MPH slider, curveball and changeup. Better late than never with the debut. Real good stuff. The only nitpick...and it is a nitpick, is I'd like to see the secondary stuff finish a little lower. Breaking balls in the top half of the zone could be trouble. But even with that, he still looked very good. I just hope he can stay together in one piece for the remainder of his career.

High leverage/elite bullpen arm or will they stretch him into a starter in 2021/2022? He seems to have a SP repertoire, but he'll be 29 in September and hasn't had a SP workload since 2017 due to injury. If the 2021 season is the full 162 games, then they might keep him as a SP just because depth is going to play a much bigger factor in a full season than it will in a 60 game season, but my guess is that his future role is in the pen. This is the fruits of accumulating so much SP depth on the 40 man roster. Most will not be big league starters, but you might be able to hit on a couple, and the rest could work out of the pen if their stuff plays up in that role.

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 I have to bump up Romano after my 30 second google searches. Merryweather also looks cooler on the mound than his mug shots suggests
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 The pitching has exceeded expectations so far in this season. Anything short of Pearson imploding I think the Blue Jays will be just fine. However, the offense has been worrying. They’re getting hits, but not with RISP. They’re getting homers, but have vastly been solo shots. After the offensive outburst in Buffalo, the lineup looks a bit more respectable: https://i.ibb.co/3vNB4DX/2-A179-B7-D-4262-4-FC2-8526-7-B1-FE38881-D7.jpg Offense has turned a corner since last week. Grichuk, Biggio, Shaw, Tellez made significant leaps in wRC+ from the past two series.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 I will start a trade deadline thread if one hasn't been started. But lets talk Reece McGuire. I think there are currently 7 or 8 catcher injuries. The Cardinals have 30 games in 20 days and a catcher 1 day younger than fire. This is the most value Reece is ever going to have. Get a pre-arb bullpen arm for him right now and let the Kirk era start

Trivino from the A's maybe? Hunter Wood from the Indians? I can't see us getting an elite young arm for Reese, but maybe we can get someone to stabilize the pen for the next 4 years.
