Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 Apparently Buffalo’s field is fine under normal conditions but they weren’t maintaining it. Atleast not maintaining it enough to be ready for Baseball this season. Especially when the Bisons season got cancelled. The Stadium is owned by the city they weren’t spending money on daily maintenance if they weren’t making money from playing on it. I'm more laughing at the whole "oh s***, we need to bust our asses to make the stadium PLAYABLE for a major league team" No rush in fixing it up for the Bisons, lol
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 I very much like when the team has so much SP depth that good young arms end up in the pen. RP versions of Hatch, Kay, Borucki are very watchable
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 Yeah I don't mind Shaw being platooned, but if Drury is the only option to play that role, then might as well keep Shaw in there everyday. Drury sucks against everyone. I think Shaw signed with a verbal agreement he would be a full time starter (and not platooned). We are probably just using the pair of lefties as an excuse to give him a few more days to ensure he's 100%
WILLIEUPSHAW Verified Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 I thought they said on today's game broadcast that tomorrow is the deadline to trim the active roster to 28. So who goes ? I guess McKinney is a given. ETA: no way Alford gets through waivers (especially the Marlins right now), so I expect him to be gone before the end of this season

Maybe Cole instead of Yama. Possible Mckinney gets cut and Alford stays until Fisher comes back, but both of those guys are definitely on the chopping block.

Shatkins seems like the type of guys to give a player they brought in all the way from Japan (after many successful years in the Japanese big leagues) a little more chance before they cut him, although, according to Fangraphs, he does have options, so they could send him to Rochester to work on his stuff. I expect someone like Waguespack to be sent down before Cole (has pitched 3 scoreless innings and no options).
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 Isn't Espinal still on the team, not sure how he can stick around. I think Alford survives a few more days.

He (unlike Alford) has options, so I bet he gets sent down. Alford is equally valuable as a pinch runner (remember Espinal started at 2nd and stole 3rd in the top of the 10th versus TB).
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 Espinal and McKinney would be the logical choice. Keep in mind the taxi squad has been expanded to 5 players so they’re technically still around.

I wasn't sure if switching to the taxi squad would require going through waivers or that they were expanding the taxi squad. It should be very manageable with 28 active roster (I think MLB decided to keep this for the duration of 2020 regular season instead of going down to 26) plus 5 man taxi squad. Regardless, it seems the time is rapidly running out on Alford. Maybe he can go to a new org. and flourish like Mike Yastrzemski, who spent 5 years in the Orioles' system before going to SF and breaking out last season.
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 There's also guy who has options that can be cut without repercussion right now would be very risky to cut anybody without options as they will likely be sign to teams that are facing covid 19 shortage. Who knows in few week it could be the Jays that's hit with an outbreak and they'd be glad to have some those guys around. Just look at the Marlins that what they had to do in order to field a somewhat competitive team. Right now I would dare say anybody released on waiver are gone to another organization because of the situation that this pandemic is causing nobody knows who's next.
polar bear Verified Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 I thought Shaw was back with the team. Why is he not in the lineup tonight? No great loss,he’s looked pretty crap so far.
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 you guys are way off. Shaw is a huge upgrade over Drury. Shaw is a respected mlb hitter.
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 No worries Shaw signed a one year guaranteed deal to be an everyday player with the Blue Jays. The only difference he's now going to be playing 3rd base instead of first.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 No great loss,he’s looked pretty crap so far. After playing 2 games and hitting .333/.500/.500?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 Espinal and McKinney would be the logical choice. I mean, hopefully it doesn't happen, but with how completely random testing has been, it's not hard to imagine a situation where we lose some pitchers/outfielders in a bunch and then have to dumpster dive for even worse players.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 No great loss,he’s looked pretty crap so far. Shaw has? 193 wRC+ and 0.2 WAR in 2 games. What are you talking about? We need Shaw back. If he returns to 2017-18 form, he's a legit starter and part of our short term future at 3rd base.
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 One has to wonder who in charge of the Blue Jays players talent recognition. It just beyond me that they gave up on Gio Urshela and gave him to the Yankees for $25,000.00 and last season and this year he has been one of the most productive 3rd baseman in baseball defensively and productively. He played so good that the Yankee had to move their regular 3rd baseman Miguel Andujar to the outfield because Urshela is a better player at the position. Time for the front office to recognize talent where is at an never mind the name on the back of sweater this is just an example on how stupid it make them look as baseball executive.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 I'd probably chop Panik and Alford. Both suck and both are used way too much by Buntoyo. Drury being a really good defender and idk...good minor league track record with the bat? Make me think he's probably a good bench option.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 Yeah, with how weird this season has been, exposing guys to waivers seems like a shortsighted move. Every team that had positive tests either had them right at the start of the year or blatantly broke the rules. Virus isn't passing organically on the field or clubhouse when protocols are being followed. I think the Marlins and Cardinals situation is enough of a deterrent for most players.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 Urshela looked nothing like this before the Yankees. To be fair they identified the talent, signed him and gave him playing time. That’s more than a lot of other clubs. It just didn’t happen here.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 It more likely speaks to how advanced the Yankees are at squeezing talent out of players. Nothing more nothing less. Gio was a nobody before getting to the Bronx.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 You guys know this is an obvious troll thread. Why entertain it?

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 So it was Espinal and Waguespack... I would have liked to keep Espinal on the roster because it feels like we have no real backup SS now
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2020 Posted August 6, 2020 (edited) If anyone is harboring resentment that a former scrub like Gio Urshela just so happened to become good with the Yankees after stinking it up with two MLB teams previously (including a brief stop here), give your heads a shake. These things happen and it will happen again. It's just the nature of the sport. Honestly, I'm happy for Gio. This isn't even a case of "what could've been", it's just a complete non-issue. I would have liked to keep Espinal on the roster because it feels like we have no real backup SS now Yeah I thought they'd option McKinney because he's not even being used and Espinal was getting some chances. Being said, maybe the fact that Espinal was getting some chances inspired the smart front office to remove him from Charlie Buntoyo's tool box. There's some logic there, if you do a handstand and squint directly at the sun.
