I am not on the we have to sign a big FA bandwagon. However, I will say the Atkins, Shapiro corporate speak was fnnn boring after week 1 and now fnnn annoying. We must have one of the most vanilla and boring front offices in baseball.

I have mentioned it many times, I think Shapiro is about sustainability, but at the cost of pulling the trigger to get us over the hump in FA and trade.

You have to be able to pull the trigger sometimes and don’t let risk paralyze you.

To add: It sounds like Sanders and Cherington were responsible for most of our best draft picks. I know Lacava was responsible for some of our best acquisitions.. So, let’s hope we don’t lose LaCava..

Ah yes. Here's Ross demonstrating his ability to speak words.

This is a market and the Blue Jays know it - you heard it here first.

From MLBTR this morning:

“It could be that the Jays’ deliberate methods of pursuing and evaluating every possible arm on the market are leaving them behind other teams who make a more direct push for a specific pitcher at the top of their list. In the view of one agent, talks with the Blue Jays “are 90 per cent due diligence that doesn’t go anywhere.” “

This reminds me of several guys in our dynasty leagues.

Honestly I think it's great news that the Blue Jays do due diligence on the entire market. Why would you want a team to do anything less than that? That's sublime coverage and their sense of the market probably helped them pull the trigger on the Chase Anderson move, which I think was good.

There's a lot of time to add SP talent and free agent talent. If the 2021 roster has holes in it then the process has been flawed, but until then we can't say that. There's a chance that they strike out on significant additions this offseason but they are not really in a position where they should be doing anything over the top anyway so that might be fine.

Maybe the Jays have their sights set on next year's FA market? I mean it is not as strong as this year's, but Odorizzi will be there without a QO, as will other mid rotation types that likely won't cost $100m to sign. Plus it will be the last off season before the CBA expires, so the market might be different. The Jays are not at a point in their win curve where grossly overpaying for someone is going to make much of a difference, so they might be more in the feeler stage to see who might fall into their laps.

With the way this market has transpired, how much is Ryu going to get and how much would you be comfortable paying him?

4 years $80M is likely what it’ll take for us it seems. That 4th year is scary for a guy like Ryu, but you can frontload the contract to ease that last year if necessary.

In my opinion it actually works the other way for the mid level guys. We think that if the top level guys get more the mid level guys will get more as well but team budgets and luxury tax ceilings are the same.

Cole getting 36 mil a year is great for the top tier free agents but the mid guys are not impacted by this change.

The amount of overall money for mlb player hasnt changed.

We can already see this with Didi and Gausman. Teams are not going to want to pay luxury taxes. Their budgets are determined by owners who didnt get rich being stupid

Not entirely true.

Zack Wheeler, Kyle Gibson, Drew Pomeranz all exceeded their projected contract totals by MLBTR and Fangraphs. Bumgarner apparently has $100M+ on the table. The mid level market is being priced higher than in recent years.

Interest in free agent OF Kole Calhoun is solidifying, with the #BlueJays, #Reds, #Brewers and #Marlins all showing interest, sources say. He’s coming off a career-high 33 HR season with the #Angels. @MLBNetwork @MLB

Trollosi is just putting "#BlueJays" because he knows it will generate traffic given the quantity of the fanbase on social media. It means nothing. Just ignore him.

Trollosi caveats aside, when Toronto is reported to be competing for a player against CIN, MIA, and MIL, you have to like Toronto's chances of getting the guy if they actually want him.

Calhoun was good enough last year and has been average or better his entire career, save for 2018. He's probably a projectable 1-2 WAR upgrade on the current roster if they then line up the OF Gurriel-Grichuk-Calhoun. He's not an addition to sneeze at and I'd certainly f***ing take it. Did you guys know that Brito, Fisher, Drury, Hanson, Pillar, Urena, Davis, and Alford with Toronto combined for like negative 3 wins last year?

I guess in that scenario, Teoscar moves to 1st and/or DH's more often?

Not that I'm against adding Calhoun, but it'll make for an interesting OF depth chart. There's still Alford, McKinney, and Fisher to consider. McKinney and Teoscar have options. Alford and Fisher are out of options. I know people on here aren't too fond of Fisher, but I'd like to give him a leash next season.

Alford and McKinney don't really factor into my projected 26 man roster. McKinney still has an option. I think Fisher is a good fit for a bench spot. Teoscar and Calhoun could split time in a corner and through DH; they are complement each other with the handedness. The defense also helps the fit because Calhoun can replace Teoscar in the OF if Teoscar has started and Calhoun would be a huge defensive upgrade. I think Teoscar has an option too, actually?

It seems kind of obvious at this point that Toronto wants a LHB that can fit in at OF/1B. Yoshi is my preference.

I think (hope?) we'll see Toronto run 6 or 7 players at any given time through the outfield spots and 1B and DH. Kind of a Rays roster construction where the little things like platoon advantage and defensive switches are always taken advantage of.

I would move Teoscar to buffalo and let him know he can stay there unless he can reduce his k rate by a good 8 percent

Teoscar posted a .939 OPS in the second half and he made at least some improvement defensively, not that he doesn't have a ways to go. He also had the fastest sprint speed of any blue jay regular last year. He strikes out a lot, but he walked almost 10% of the time last year. If he continues to take his walks and hits his bombs, he's actually got quite a bit upside still.

He certainly doesn't belong in AAA.
