So, let's speculate. Since it can't be a player from this years draft (apparently), what are the other reasons for a PTBNL? someone on the IL?

Isn't Banda on the IL?

What about the IFA class. Are they off the table too?

Jays need more time to decide on the prospects made available?

If there's any truth to the "they liked the Cubs' offer, but liked the Rays' offer more tweet from earlier in this thread", that doesn't track. Sounds like they were talking with 3 teams and this was the best offer.

True, but was responding to a post inviting speculation. It's been the case in the past that PTBNL is to give a team more time to decide between players.

Both Banda and DeLeon are on IL, and on rehab assignments

According to RotoWire, DeLeon was activated from the 60 man on July 3rd.

It could just be that the Rays said something along the lines of, "We're willing to give you 1 guy from this group of 3 and another from this other group of 6." Jays want more time to evaluate before making the decision, but already like the players within the groups more than what the Cubs or Giants were offering.

Counts are arbitrary, of course, but a scenario like that is pretty possible.

Makes sense to me. Especially if some or all of the players involved are short season guys or have recently missed time with injuries - just taking a longer look.

Resly Linares would be a sweet acquisition here, but he's probably too good to be included.

Very best offer. Jays had 3 more days to wait for an offer.

So, if the Cubs wanted Sogard, think they'll take Galvis as a consolation prize?

They wanted Sogard to get some production out of their leadoff spot, Galvis doesn't really help that.

That rules out Banda and De Leon.

Gotta look for the Rule 5 eligible prospects, Rays have a significant crunch coming

Lucius Fox, Garrett Whitley two such players

Banta is on the 60 day, so technically not on the 40 man...

I wonder what they do if they get a list of 10 players to choose from and a day later they trade some of those players to some other team, how can that work? They put a lock on those players? It's weird...

Trading Galvis is completely unnecessary.

MLB really needs to get rid of the PTBNL nonsense. Imagine trades being secret to the public.

It's not a secret. It's usually the team has a list of players to pick from by a certain date.
