King Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Based on the discussion in the GDT this morning, I am interested to hear other people's opinions on Aaron Sanchez. Would you give Aaron Sanchez 5/60? If not, what do you think a reasonable contract extension would look like? Based on the assumption that we could extend him cheaper than it would cost to get a comparable pitcher on the open market. If he's somehow commanding like $20M per, then obviously not, but if we could lock him up at like 5/$60-80M or so I'd do that. I'm comfortable with him as a #3 starter for a few years. That'd be okay for an elie reliever at worst, sign me up at 5/60. That would be an excellent contract if we could get it done. His arm has been very healthy and it's blatantly obvious by now that he's a FIP beater. Then there's always what tantalizing Cy level upside if he retains his stuff. I like this optimism! Sanchez is absolutely terrible. Count me out of the group giving him $80 million. Good Lord. I’m still a bit unsure about Sanchez on a 5 year deal. If he can stay healthy for a full season and pitch at minimum like a no. 3 starter, then I would do 5/$60M. It’s a bit of a tall order though, he’s been A) healthy, good, for a full season only once in his career.. and even that year his finger was questionable. With the way Boris milks his cash cows, he’s more likely to reach free agency and pray for a bidding war. But an extension could happen. 80 million, no way. 60, lets shake hands. Wait, we're talking about a $60M deal for Aaron Sanchez? The guy who a) can't stay healthy, and sucks? But seriously, Aaron Sanchez was legitimately good in 2016. There's no question about that. Since then he's started 32 games, has an ERA of 4.47, an xFIP of 5.03, and his K/BB is 7.2/5. He has major concerns about his ability to stay healthy, and also about his ability to pitch well when he is healthy, given that he's been a good starter once in his career, and it was 3 years ago. I really can't stress how insane I think it would be to give Aaron Sanchez 60M. Maybe he's about to go on a great run and return to the guy he was in 2016, but until that happens, he's the kind of guy you pay a few million bucks to hold down the 5th starter spot.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 I'd extend Sam Gaviglio for like a third of the price instead since Gaviglio is likely better anyway. Seems like a no brainer.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 I wouldn't extend him at all right now.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Sanchez is an options guy for me. I don't ever ink him to guaranteed money without an easy out. I imagine I'd be looking for a trade for him now though, unless he's the type that is absolutely open to being a once through the order guy.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Sign me up at 60 You are inexplicably dumn
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 You are inexplicably dumn That's your opinion, goof.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 That's your opinion, goof. Mine and every other person not blinded by homerism
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Mine and every other person not blinded by homerism Right, at worst a shut down late inning arm.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Right, at worst a shut down late inning arm. Yeah ERA near 5, total shut down late inning arm. Actual question, do you watch any baseball or do you just get swept up in hype and develop a Grantian level of stubbornness? Would you be all for giving Sam Gaviglio 4/40?
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 No! Blister issues affect the secondary stuff too much. Might not be on the IL but still have issues.. Will be in the pen in 3 yrs.. Plus with Boras will not be able to get value in risk vs. reward.. NO!
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Nope, can't count on Sanchez to produce anymore value than a cheap free agent pitcher, and he really remains no less of a project/wild card than some of our controllable young arms. Use that money on a more dependable option.

We still don't know what he is as a starter, champ. 2nd question suck my dick Bird boy, 3rd, don't be absurd, you're an idiot.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Yo paso!! Sanchez is so inconsistent and volatile and Boras' client.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 If he didn't have the finger injury concerns sure I'd be open to extending him but because of that f*** no.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Yo paso!! Sanchez is so inconsistent and volatile and Boras' client. It's why this conversation is useless, amigo.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 I think I'd be fine with 5/60 in August or September, if the finger issues don't return as the heat and humidity pick up.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 As long as he uses the money to fix his buck teeth.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 I mean, we're talking $12-16M, I know contracts have been all over the place recently, but that's like Alex Cobb/Danny Duffy money, not paying him to be an ace or anything. The health issue is, of course, a concern, and if you think you can pick up an equally good pitcher at that price on the open market (which, these days who the f*** knows?) then sure, do that.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Sanchez would get 60 mil on the open market right now, I have no doubt about that. Young pitchers with healthy arms and ace level stuff always get paid. His velocity is still 95, strikeouts are way up, groundball rate is still over 50%. There's a lot to like about that profile even with the frustrating control issues.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 I'd pass on Sanchez for that. Way too wildly inconsistent for my liking. And if he's gonna end up in the pen anyway, you can find comparable output for a fraction of that price.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Don't worry about it, Spanky is kind of a dumbass so I'm just trolling him a bit. His nauseating homerism is amusing.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 Why do you care? I'm answering him, ya dickhead. With that kind of anger I'm tempted to believe the rumours I've heard about your past transgressions.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 I don't have a problem with the $12M, I do have a problem with the 5 years and the timing. The Jays have a ton of payroll flexibility and young talent coming up. Why sacrifice a piece of that for Sanchez right now? This is a conversation to have about 18 months from now. There is no need to sign a guy like Sanchez early. It's not likely his price tag will go up by this time next year, but could go down.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 21, 2019 Posted April 21, 2019 With that kind of anger I'm tempted to believe the rumours I've heard about your past transgressions. He just gets mad when he gets caught in a conversation he's clueless about. Which is why he's mad pretty much all the time.
