Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 And BTS has repeated it's about money only, 3 times. F off At least BTS was using a logical thought process and responding to people in conversation. Your thought process was that a 30 year old average player still under team control with absolutely no leverage was demanding a trade. I mean, I suppose it's within the realm of possibility that he raised a stink and was a clubhouse cancer for it, but Pillar would have to be one hell of a clueless douche to act like that. Which would only derail what career he has left by the time he hits free agency.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Pillar was a good player for the Jays, but are people seriously thinking he was necessary to keep around? He is a 1-2 war player in his 30's in an era where those types of players have trouble getting deals. Plus the team is rebuilding and probably tanking for a top pick (they have made no effort at all to win) so what good is Pillar on the squad even for depth purposes? If Jonathan Davis and Pompey (if he ever gets healthy) end up with a shitload of AB's, then so be it. 2019 means nothing to Shatkins. From reading this thread people wanted them to trade him "when the time was right".
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 I mean it would have been nice to get a Trent Thornton type but I'll settle for a Juan De Paula if that's what the market was. Pillar's value wasn't going to increase. De Paula's scouting report posted above is one of those all-too-common generic scouting reports that essentially tells us nothing. Maybe he is a legit SP prospect, according to data we don't have? Remember also that everyone grumbling in this thread also probably hated the Aledmys trade until like two days ago when they saw Thornton pitch. This front office knows what they are doing! lol Derek Law helps with the bullpen depth, which only recently became a major issue, of course. He doesn't have to have any real value, he just fits a hole at the moment. Not sure why they want Hanson but whatever.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Besides roster considerations, there may have been stuff going on behind the scenes. Pillar may have asked to be traded. The list of considerations is only known to Shatkins and any speculation is just that Isn't Pillar's girl from Cal and didn't they just have their first child together?

This front office knows what they are doing! lol I admit that I was one of those. But at the time they were relinquishing their MIF depth to the point where Urena is on the MLB roster and there was still lots of time to fill out the holes on the pitching side through FA. Now that we are in April, I admit, Thornton + Urena looks a lot more tenable than Diaz + whatever s*** pitcher is next after SRF.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Will Alford be with the team for tonights game? One would think, Urena gets optioned, Hanson becomes our 25 man and Alford starts.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Now they need to trade Smoak so Hernandez can DH, McKinney can start in LF, and Tellez can go to 1B.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 That's brutal right there but it's a move that needed to be made sooner or later.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Damn, I wonder if his early season performance was due to these trade rumors, obviously he loved playing here. He was a good cheap player and a key part of that 2015 team.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Yeah no one can deny how much value he brought from 2015-18. He was a key member of those playoff teams and great surplus value for the team. If the Jays wanted to win in 2019, then you hold on to him, but clearly they give no F's about 2019, so this was the only solution. Wish him all the best though. Him and his hot wife.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 I'm okay with this move, we're worse today than we were yesterday, but I think this move, long term, makes us better. He wasn't going to be here forever, and this year is pretty much a write off (and, personally, I think Alford puts up comparable numbers to Pillar in 2019 already.)
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Good luck KP... it's been a slice!
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 And BTS has repeated it's about money only, 3 times. F off The path to this being about money is a lot more clear than some conspiracy theory about something something behind the scenes that you agree is baseless speculation that none of us know anything about.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Really looks and sounds like a guy who begged the FO for a trade.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Here's his interview. 100% worth watching, I've been critical of Pillar but watching that was tougher than expected. https://streamable.com/kiy3u
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Now they need to trade Smoak so Hernandez can DH, McKinney can start in LF, and Tellez can go to 1B. They're not going to trade Smoak first off he the only veteran left on the team plus when Vald Guerrero jr come up there's no guarantees he stays at 3rd base they might decide to transition him to 1 base for defensive purposes. Smoak is one the best defensive first baseman in the league and if they decide to move Vladdy Jr they want someone who can actually teach him the position. Tellez is exactly a glove glove caliber 1 baseman by all means his milb fielding wasn't the greatest that why scouts said his best position is potentially as DH.
mtljaysfan Verified Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Although I wanted Pillar to be traded 'cause we're in rebuilding, I actually feel sad to see him go now. He's been a good defensive CF and a key part of our 2015-2016 playoof runs. For a so late round draft, he turned to be a good player for US and earned a few millions $ for him in the process. A sucess story.
mtljaysfan Verified Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 s***. Never expected he's be so emotional.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Really looks and sounds like a guy who begged the FO for a trade. There may have been stuff going on behind the scenes that no one other than Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins knows about. It’s likely that he had one foot out the door as he wasn’t happy with the direction of the team. He’s an ego maniac and his sulking was a detriment within the clubhouse. I for one noticed quite the difference in his demenor.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 s***. Never expected he's be so emotional. He’s loved by the fans who go to the games, is the longest serving player, and came from nowhere to be a contributor on some really good teams, following which he’s seen nearly all his colleagues leave. I’d be shocked if it didn’t effect him emotionally.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Damn, just watched the full interview, tough to watch, great guy. Okay... time to move on, here's your chance Alford.
