The Blue Jays have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with INF Freddy Galvis with a club option for the 2020 season.

#BlueJays have signed shortstop Freddy Galvis to a one-year deal worth $4 million.

The 29-year-old hit .248/.299/.380 with 13 homers in 162 games with the San Diego Padres last season.

ML contract makes this interesting. Good bench piece in a vacuum though I wouldn't be surprised if he's the veteran stopgap at SS that Atkins was talking about.

He's not very good but he's a big upgrade over Urena/Sogard. For 4 mil he'll be a fine bench player.

He's going to get 500+ PA lol.

Will we see gurriel get reps at SS, 2B, OF and galvis getting most of the reps at SS?

I'd rather see that with Bichette and Smith a year or so away

Let's play the 'who gets punted from the 40-man' game. I think Pompey's time is finally up.

Edit: Danny Barnes DFA'd. Pompey lives on.

Rich man's Ryan Goins. He'll probably settle in around ~1 WAR providing elite SS and 2B defense and the occasional super utility role with surprising power but overall underwhelming hitting.

I think I had been overrating Danny Barnes. 29-year old out of options reliever projected for an ERA of like 4.5. DFA checks out.

That's a really good question. Gurriel is in the mix at SS. When Vlad comes up he'll take 3B which will put Drury in the mix at 2B along with Travis. Then there's Galvis. I kind of think he'll be the 25th man but injuries are inevitable and he'll probably get plenty of PT.

This makes no sense at all. Trade infield depth and then add more infield depth lol

Well, it Richard Urena was going to make the team before this. I don't think they felt they traded Diaz due to a surplus, but rather because they liked Thornton more as an asset.

Asdrubal Cabrera went for less lol.

It could be that Freddy Galvis has an excellent agent, but I feel like Asdrubal Cabrera's agent must be the worst in the business after that deal lol.

Maybe Asdrubal Cabrera just really really wanted to play in... (Googles team)... Arlington, Texas.

And we received an asset in return during the trade, how is the surplus hard to understand?

Yet we lack any quality surplus on SP...makes sense MIF can start games to now

I love when you go to Galvis' Fangraphs page the recent news from Rotowire:

"Galvis did not receive a $17.9 million qualifying offer from the Padres before Friday's deadline"

f***, you're shittin me

The asset we received in the trade is SP depth. How does signing Galvis inhibit the FO from acquiring more SP?

It appears as though you're trying really hard to complain about this

Great deal with no downside. Galvis made $7M in arb 3. Only 29 years old.

The Padres traded Enyel De Los Santos for this guy before 2018 - he could return a similar arm at the trade deadline if some contender has a hole at SS and Galvis is doing okay.

Jays are projected to have one of the worst pens in baseball...yet now with Barnes gone I struggle with finding DFA candidates on the RP list. OF next for sure.

At least we won't have to watch Gurriel at SS for too long.

Now definitely seems like they're going to give Pompey a real chance.
