MadBum signing a five year deal with the DBacks.

I’m going to guess this makes Ryu back to the Dodgers more likely.

Dodgers haven't even contacted Ryu supposedly.

Wow... didn't see that coming, were the D-Backs always in on MadBum?

Edit: Yup, I don't get why they're rumoured to trade Ray?! I assume they won't be doing that.

That seems really light to me

Bumgarner hasn't been elite the last two years, but I'd happily take him at that price. He's probably a #3 starter who eats innings. Lots of value in that.

lol... what on earth are you talking about, owe us?

It was a joke. We should have a good enough relationship given past dealings that we would have been able to have a shot to offer a package. Too much risk for our blood though.

Why is it so hard for people to belive

They want to keep the payroll low so they can make Roger's more profit

Payroll at 90 mil vs. 120 mil Roger's makes an extra 30

Simple

I wouldn't think this changes anything in the Ray plans.

Or Cleveland really like Clase, I don't get the DDJ acquisition though, certainly a light return. Also, as some have suggested, his medicals might have red flags.

This is just business 101, if you spend zero money on your business, you make more money. Hell, if you spend $0 on your business, you make $infinity, it's just basic economics, people!

lol, who finally gave Barkerfan the timeout?

And for what

I did. He is aware that his leash is shorter than most. 20 of his last 25 posts were basically the same bashing the front office. Offer some baseball acumen and bash away. He's allowed to comeback and wish everyone a happy new year.

The added info on the Kluber trade hints at what it might have taken Toronto to land him. Cleveland basically views Clase as a top 100 prospect. Seems like they would have asked for something like Groshans + I dunno, Zeuch or SRF or Pardinho or Thornton, who knows.

Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti discussed the deal with reporters (including The Athletic’s Zack Meisel and MLB.com’s Mandy Bell) and addressed the “variety of different packages” offered by “a lot of teams that had interest in Corey.” One of the factors that helped sway the talks in the Rangers’ direction was that Clase and DeShields are “two players that could come back and help us in 2020 and help us try to sustain the level of competitiveness we’ve had over the last seven years.” Even in the short amount of time since the trade was announced, Antonetti revealed that some teams had already called to ask if Clase was available in a follow-up deal.

The Angels were one of the teams known to have interest in Kluber, though Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group (Twitter link) reports that the Indians wanted highly-touted outfield prospect Brandon Marsh and another top-10 prospect from the Halos’ farm system. It was a significant ask, given how Marsh is widely considered to be the Angels’ second-best prospect (after Jo Adell) and is ranked by Fangraphs as the 74th-best prospect in all of baseball. If Cleveland was seeking for such a return for Kluber from the various teams in the hunt, Fletcher notes that it could be a sign that “they have a much higher opinion of Clase than most of baseball.”

I would have given them a borderline top 100 in Kay and Alford.

Kay is one of the most likely of our prospects to end up as a long term part of our rotation so I doubt our front office would have made that deal.

Obviously they didn't make the offer or we'd probably have Kluber. I just think it would be a reasonable price for 2 years of an ace.

I mean I agree that in a vacuum such a deal would be reasonable, but don't agree that either Cleveland would see it as a better deal or that it would have been a good deal for us.

Kluber isn't guaranteed to be an ace any more, even if we assume he comes back fine from injury he only has 2 years of control so doesn't fit our timeline, and Kay and Alford isn't necessarily a can't miss better deal for Cleveland (considering that Alford has zero trade value and they seem to really like Clase).

The Mets DFA'd an interesting reliever arm to make room for Porcello.

The article is kinda crap. They basically ignore reports of potential higher offers because it doesn't fit in with their narrative.

Yeah.

Claiming Cleveland should have gotten more because Kluber’s trade value is high is question-begging. The question actually raised by this deal is if Kluber’s current trade value is so low, why on earth would Cleveland bother to deal him now?

Or the question is maybe what is the public not understanding about Clase's projected value AND/OR Kluber's correct projections?

I hate all of this "bad for baseball" s***. A team doesn't want to spend a lot of money and it's always "bad for baseball". It's a wonderful irony that all of the left wing baseball twitter pinkos basically hate the poor teams.

It's a bit surprising to see that kind of language in the middle of an offseason that has a good chance to set the all-time record for FA spending.
