IIRC all four FA signings so far have exceeded median FG crowdsourced projections. I like it.

you like it because you think it's good when FA's are getting paid?

Well his guaranteed money only ended in 2018 but yeah you're right. I imagine with the marijuana stuff (which is stupid but it is what it is) and related attitude issues he's just seen as too much trouble for what it's worth.

MLB players are except IIRC. At this point all players should be, cannabis is not a performance enhancing drug and everyone knows that.

It's good for the sport when not just the stars are being paid so yeah this is promising. Also it's just fun to see teams not cheaping out and acquiring talent in free agency when it comes at reasonable cost at least.

Yeah. I think baseball is healthier when more than a handful of teams are trying to win, and the entire offseason narrative isn't about teams not wanting to pay FAs. Hopefully it's more than just the Sox and Braves that spend aggressively to improve their teams.

Yes free agents getting paid well is good for the game. Maybe it won't avoid an ugly labor dispute or work stoppage in two years, but it certainly won't hurt.

Teams not trying to win is the biggest issue with the game right now aside from unfair pay for a player's early career (minors + first 6 years). Baseball will probably never be a mainstream sport again but it can still thrive as a regional sport if teams actually give a damn about trying to field a contender. Paying free agents rather than waiting until April to get them for pennies is a good start so far, even if it's only AA and the White Sox doing it so far.

I'd agree. I'd just like that trend to develop AFTER the Jays lock up the pieces they need to add to our core.

AA just can’t help himself when it comes to acquiring ex-jays players

Why not? It's a smart move. He knows the player personally. The player knows him to some extent as well. There has to be some kind excess value to be extracted by taking advantage of relationships like that (or knowing which ones to avoid).

Anything is possible if the league embraces degenerate gamblers. How many "true" NFL fans are there? Meaning the types that just cheer for the sake of cheering and never place any money on the games, join pools etc.

Probably more than he would have gotten in last year's free agency so good for him. D'Arnaud projects pretty well so a nice deal for the Braves here.

Anthopoulos has really found his free agency niche with "low-to-medium risk"/"medium-to-high reward" signings.

AA offered him $15m for 2 years and TdA said "remember that time you traded me cause you said JPA would have the better career, throw in another $1m"

Guarantee he has contacted BVW about trading for Syndergaard too. Which the Mets say they won't anyway.

Not saying its a bad move, just funny that he seems to favor ex-jays and players he knows. Examples: Bautista, Donaldson, Hechavarria, O’day, d’Arnaud, Markakis, and probably more that im missing.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they sign Stroman next year. Actually i’m expecting it.

Mariners get Graveman for a 1/2 guarantee and a 3.5M team option for 2021. Pretty good signing.

Weird scouting profile for Joey Bart on Fangraphs. This is 23 year old guy, picked out of college in 2018.

They give him present hit and game power grades of 35 and 50. Speed 35, arm 55, fielding 65.

Overall future value of 60 as a defense + power guy. I'm just surprised the hit tool is that low, I thought he was supposed to be a better all around prospect. I mean Reese McGuire is probably a 35 hit, 65 defense guy right?

f***, Gibson to Texas. I thought he was one of the best targets for Toronto

I actually thought the Jays would get Gibson on a similar deal to what Happ got in 2016 (three years). Hopefully this means the Jays are aiming higher, but curious to see what he got from Texas.

Zach Davies and Eric Lauer flipping teams too. This is kind of a big deal.

Trent Grisham traded to the Padres, return pending.

Don't make costly errors in the playoffs kids.

YEAH! or you might have to spend your playing days in San Diego instead of Milwaukee!!

Huge f***ing win for Milwaukee. Lauer is worth a boatload more than Davies, is he not? Urias was a top 20 or 30 prospect.

This trade seems like a heist for Milwaukee. I would have though Lauer was more valuable than Davies, and Urias more valuable than Grisham.

Gibson gets 3/30 when he was projected to get a 2 year deal at a similar AAV. So the trend of free agents getting more than projected continues (good).

Wow 3/30 for Gibson is a great contract for Texas. I would’ve given him at least another couple million a year to be in Toronto

Yeah. Initial reaction seems to be that Texas overpaid, but I'd be thrilled if Shatkins had signed him to these terms.

Me too, I don’t see it as an overpay at all. He’s been a durable starter who gets ground balls and has an elite slider so there is still some potential K upside. He was my number one realistic target for this team.

Same. I wonder if his age factored in to those initial reactions? He'll be 35 in the final year of that deal. I mean that's not ancient, but he should be declining by then.

I would say that Davies and Lauer are similarly talented, but the latter has substantially more team control so yeah I'd say he's far more valuable. Prospects wise Urias was rated much higher than Grisham as well so it's a pretty puzzling deal for the Padres.
