Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2019 Posted August 20, 2019 Also, I see a lot of missed calls when the umpire sets up too far on one side of the plate. If he's set up inside and the pitch is thrown on the outside, he sees it as a strike because of perspective. But they have to set up directly behind the catcher or they risk getting drilled by a foul tip. You could just put a small protective device between the C and the ump and you ensure the ump has his stupid head directly behind the plate and centered, and the calls would improve. Are you proposing transparent catchers? That seems like the harder thing to do technologically than a robotic strike zone The robo zone is anything but foolproof. Just wait until pitchers figure out the optimal pitch that triggers a strike call but is unhittable. Man, trying to throw an unhittable strike is the goal of every pitcher right now, the robotic zone isn't magically going to make pitchers better at hitting those spots.

Can we call a spade a spade, you added that part on top of the quip from USA Today. Obviously you're more optimistic than a lot of people back in Boston. It seems to raise a lot of concern among the baseball people and especially so in Boston. https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/video/chris-sale-delaying-inevitable-not-getting-surgery
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2019 Posted August 20, 2019 Just looked at Pillar's stats (haven't paid attention to him at all), and he's still hanging around. He has a 1.6 WAR and 92 wRC+ since the trade. He'll likely finish around a 2 WAR on the season (maybe a little less). That should get him one more decent arb payday before he hits free agency (and subsequently gets ignored by teams because he's 30+). I wasn't his biggest fan, but still rooting for him. I expected him to fall off a cliff by now but he's still out there making the most out of his skill set. Good for him.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 20, 2019 Posted August 20, 2019 Makes you wonder if there's any connection to Epstein. No. No it doesn't. It might make idiots and Qanon followers (but I repeat myself) wonder that, but it doesn't make anyone rational or sane wonder anything of the sort.

Epstein had dirt on a lot of elite's and their drug usage. It's not far fetched as you think. The timing of the arrest is sure interesting as well.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 Sonny Gray continues killing it with the Reds. Another 10 strikeout performance, season FIP at 3.40, xFIP at 3.55, strikeouts way up. One of the rare guys the Yankees actually made worse and traded him at his lowest value for little. Just a reminder that Cashman isn't the boogeyman, this was a coup for the Reds.

He's the guy I really wanted us to get for Happ. He was killing it with New York on the road too, he just couldn't pitch at Yankee Stadium for some reason.

Apparently the Yankees tried to change his pitch mix and it really didn't work out. Could also have been a mental thing after some time struggling, the change of scenery has been perfect for him, and now the Reds have him cheap for three additional seasons plus a team option at a very reasonable price.
