Mookie's going to get $30+ mil next year and then $300 mil as a free agent. He can afford to.

Obvious risk is serious injury, but that's what betting on yourself means.

Or bettsing on yourself.

Ichiro retires in style! Congrats to Ichiro and glad he had a chance to walk off the field in Japan. Classy player and overall just a good guy.

Feel old as s*** as when I first started following MLB Ichiro was dominating.

Blake Snell gets 5/50 from the Rays.

So this covers one league min year, all his arb years and one free agent year? Very nice if I'm reading his BBREF page correctly.

Deals like this are great for teams like Tampa who have no hopes of affording such a player once he hits free agency. You can now afford to keep him for all 5 years if you want, or trade him for a king's ransom when he has 1.5-2 years left on his contract. (Cost controlled ace level pitchers are kinda hard to come by)

Teams like the Rays could easily afford to sign big free agents (that aren’t the Harper level mega deals) but they are too cheap. According to spotrac their payroll this season is $52m. That’s a disgrace for a team that isn’t in a full rebuild. That’s about what they will get from revenue sharing and is about 35% of the average across the league.

The Rays owners don’t care about trying to win, they are solely in it for the money, and they are bad for baseball. In summary, f*** the Rays.

Their TV deal alone pays them $82M a year. Ridiculous.

Goldschmidt signs an extension with the Cards. 5 years $110M.

Sucks. I would've loved to go after him in free agency.

Apparently the Trout, Harper, and Machado deals combined exceed the amount the Rays have paid for player salaries in their entire history.

Great deal for the Cards!

The Brewers have named Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes, and Freddy Peralta to their starting rotation. Chase Anderson and Junior Guerra to the 'pen.

Love this.

It is a shame, although he may or may not get a chance to close.

That makes it even worse!

If they were rebuilding it’d be more acceptable. The fact that they have done quite well shows that if they weren’t so tight fisted they’d could actually be a contender.

Or players don't want to sign with them...or Free Agency isn't the best way to build a team. OR THEIR REVENUE IS REALLY REALLY LOW and you severely overestimating their ability to spend. In 2017 (the last year I have data for) they were at 46.1% of revenue on salaries, that is below the average of 53.4. However, in that same year they outspent everyone else on staffing and bonuses and that doesn't include player benefits which is shared equally across the league ($14M in 2017). Calculating that number in with salary their % of salaries to revenue is right in line with the entire league. They were saddled with both the worst stadium deal, and second worst TV deal in baseball. They finally hit $50M this year when their new deal hits and it will increase every year over the next 15. Also remember they have to pay St. Pete's $42 million for the rights to leave the city for a better stadium deal. I just think you made a really ill-informed comment speaking like a typical casual fan. Do better!

The Rays get an estimated $45million a year in revenue sharing, that’s nearly the same as their entire payroll.

They are in a s***** market with a terrible stadium so absolutely they aren’t in the market for the real big contracts. But you’re deluded if you think they not only can’t afford but aren’t deliberately penny pinching by not spending more on player contracts (not just free agents but trading / getting rid of their own players to save money).

Again the Rays are not rebuilding, they are cheap. They should be relocated, it’s not like they’d be missed by their practically non-existent fanbase.

Chris Sale signs an extension with the Red Sox. Around 5 years $150M, according to Passan.

Upcoming free agency class took a huge hit with Goldschmidt, Arenado, Sale, and potentially Rendon signing too.

Players smartening up by avoiding free agency. Now young players smartening up by giving up a year or two of their free agent years to get guaranteed money in years 1-6.

I don't think there will be a strike anymore. A few months ago I would have said there is a good chance, but the players seem to have adjusted. Maybe some minor tweaks in the CBA but both sides will probably figure out a way to avoid a stoppage now.

Dude - they get like 183 people out to each game. How the f*** do you justify spending big bucks in players?
