Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Well that was a red flag shown last year IIRC, that's way under his avg FB velo, could be something for sure. I thought there was a rumor he was on the verge of signing an extension a few days ago?? I can't imagine the Red Sox extending him if there are any red flags. It will be telling if the extension is finalized or not. In the former case he's probably healthy, in the latter probably not.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Pujols isn't going anywhere until he gets his 2,000 RBI.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 18, 2019 Posted March 18, 2019 Watching the Angels game and Pujols is an absolute trainwreck at 1B. Three errors on two routine grounders in the same inning. They need to just accept the sunk cost and cut him. There are a few milestones they obviously want him to reach. If he can get 18 RBI's (to get him to 2000) before Ohtani is ready to DH it would be a perfect time. He can Alomar it too...sitting at a .302 career average right now. A full season of .240 would probably leave him borderline to stay above .300. I'd have to do some math.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 (edited) Yankees sign Gio Gonzales to a minor league deal Seems like he'll almost certainly get regular starts in April. Earns 3M if he makes the big league roster. Edited March 19, 2019 by G-Snarls

I'm sure they're doing so rather begrudgingly of course Won 2 World Series titles in St Louis Has been in one playoff series in LA, in which he hit. 167 Watching him chase stats is not what they had in mind I'm sure. One of the worst contracts ever given out. Edited March 19, 2019 by G-Snarls
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Mike Trout about to sign a 12 year 430 million dollar contract extension with the Angels.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Mike Trout about to sign a 12 year 430 million dollar contract extension with the Angels. Holy shitballs! I wonder how Harper feels about this. Double whammy for him. His plan of courting Trout in the off-season goes out the window, and Trout's deal absolutely DWARFS his.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Boras waits an eternity so he can beat Stanton's contract, and then a few weeks later Trout gets $100 million more. Love it.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Hard to say that he deserves it, you basically pay him huge amount of money for past production. While he’s still elite, I believe his defence been falling off a cliff for a while now so it’s hard to believe he will continue this pace until he’s 40.

Not really, his defense was elite his first season, that was probably an outlier, then he had a couple of poor/below-average seasons and has since settled in as an average/above-average fielder since. He's also gotten better as a hitter, consistently. He'll project for like 25-30 WAR in the next three years alone, Mike Trout is so good that unless injuries start to settle in he could easily produce surplus value in this deal, or more likely at least break even. That's worth it for literally one of the best players of all time, good on the Angels, hopefully they don't squander this opportunity like they have thus far in Trout's career.

Salary difference probably still smaller than the talent difference so Harper should be happy.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Is the $430m counting the two years he has remaining or 12 years/$430m on top of what he has left? If it's $430m on top of what he is already owed, then he's going to end up with over $570m in total earnings not counting any endorsements he has or whatever his signing bonus was. That's insane.

I would imagine it replaces his current deal, probably giving him a bit more AAV in those two years that he has remaining.

Happy to see Mike Trout get this payday but on a baseball level I wish he went to a team that was better managed. Probably never get to see Trout in the Workd Series now haha

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted March 19, 2019 Author Posted March 19, 2019 Interesting article: Mike Trout is rich after signing long-term with Angels, but he'll never be famous The article surmises that only Harper and Judge would turn heads walking down a street. I just sent a message about Trout’s contract to a WhatsApp group of friends who are all sports fans, and only one had even heard Trout’s name before. Fair enough baseball has zero impact in the UK, but every single person in the group would recognise LeBron and have at least heard of a Tom Brady. It just feels like baseball is so far behind other sports in marketing to fans and the wider public.
