Alford is gone no matter what he does the rest of the season. He's blown chunks for years now and is out of options. Best we can hope for is some nominal return after trading him to a horrible team with few major league OF options next spring.

If Randal Grichuk didn't sign that extension would he even be worthy of tendering a contract this offseason? Man he has been trash.

no and yes

He would of been tendered cause the OF is still garbage but unless he showed major improvement he wouldn't be here past 2020.

Even if you're highly convicted in your evaluation, this part of the season does not matter and you're actually going to benefit with losses. Generally speaking if a guy is giving a game or two and he sucks as you suspected you sit him.

Alford was given 1 start and was 1 for 3 on a night where the team only had 2 hits so he was facing good pitching. He also made an excellent defensive play that showed his elite speed and defensive upside. Generally speaking when you give a guy a game and he plays well you give him another until he shits the bed. The Jays sat him the next 4 or is now 5 games.

Yeah it doesn’t make any sense to call him up if you’re convinced he’s not good enough and are ready to cut loose in the summer. If he’s here he should be playing every day.

What an odd post. Fringe guys around the league were called up after their team’s minor league season ended and are now getting sparse playing time. I’m sure they’re happy with the MLB paycheck and service time.

Yes he would. He might have a good come back season next year.

During/after the broadcast last night Cliff Floyd said that Trent Thornton pitched well because he had a chip on his shoulder and implied that he was mad that he had to throw behind an opener.

Nevermind the obvious explanation, being that the opener actually works...

I f***ing love the opener. I love that by sequencing arms in a different way you can make two players greater than the sum of their traditional parts.

I hope the Blue Jays use like three openers next season. Players like Zeuch, Wag, Thornton, Bosucki, etc. should probably not be used as traditional SP.

Serious question, has anyone done any stat digging as to how successfull openers have been throughout the league ever since they were implemented from day one??

Would love to see that

We didn’t call up Pompey last year because we had plenty of outfielders and he had no future with the team. Same situation with Alford this year, except he’s been called up, so he should be playing.

Ok this now seems unnecessarily mean haha, it’s his birthday:

The season's almost over, he's an FA anyway.

Happy Birthday, take the rest of the season off. Good luck in the future.

This is not a big deal.

Haha, I guess it’s a nice present not having to watch the Jays anymore!

This would be a bad choice imo

Ok Pat Tabler. He wuz wun 4 three! Lol

It's well documented Alford made some pretty big swing changes in season in Buffalo. He's performed really well since then, but lets obsess over his minor league stats from 2017 and ignore the fact that this guy can play defense.

Keep on jerking off at Fisher's minor league stats and ignore the fact that he's struck out 36% of the time at the MLB level and let a pop fly hit himself in the f***ing face.

I'm pretty surprised Alford's not playing. I have virtually no belief in his bat but he's still a good couple years younger than all the guys ahead of him who have had a couple years (!) of leash now and he still has that thin excuse of starting baseball late in life.

He looks like another species in the outfield compared to what we've seen all year. I wonder just how low the wRC+ threshold would be for him to be a decidedly better player than all those guys? Probably really low I think.

He's made a swing change since May so just give him a shot, I dunno.

Only thing i can think of is they think he'll become Lewis Brinson against MLB pitching, but you can't really know for sure unless you give him big league AB's. I mean, McKinney is playing RF tonight. What's the point of playing him and Davis over Alford? Davis is almost 28, and McKinney is AAAA waiting to happen.

It's very odd. Gibby didn't play him either so it's not like it's a Montoyo thing. The org might not like him for one reason or another.

I love how you tried to be snarky but failed miserably. Keep obsessing over the last year that Alford had above average production at the plate.

Incredible how people would rather give PAs to a guy with a career wRC+ of 133 in Triple A over a guy with a wRC+of 90.

BUT A BALL HIT HIM IN THE FACE GAIZ!!

I'm not obsessing over the last year Alford was good. He made swing adjustments in season. He had a .473 OPS in April. Since he working through adjustments to his swing he has an OPS around .900. I'm obsessing over the past 3 and half months because his numbers are really good. I'm also obsessing over a guy who can actually play defense, because every one of our outfielders outside of Davis are below average defenders.

So Elvis Luciano got activated with the move. Guess this was so he hits the 90 days he needs to take his rights fully? How many days left did he need?

19, iirc.

Biggio's wrc is now 106

He really looks like he's going to be an excellent core piece going into the future. That eye is going to keep him in the league for a while if he keeps his K% under 30. And we can keep him at 2B, where his defensive numbers have looked just fine. It's everywhere else he's looked worse.

Exactly the same number of days left in the season:

Even if he's completely broken, they would have made this move, he doesn't need to pitch at all for the rest of the season, just has to be on the roster.

Yeah, he's unlikely to be used, no point exposing him.

It gives me anxiety that they didn't leave a one day buffer, just in case their own internal calendar counting was wrong.

lol, I was thinking the same thing. Definitely would have activated him with like 20 days left if the responsibility was mine.

Was Luciano actually hurt or was this a fraud the whole time? Either way, I'm impressed by their determination to hold on to him without giving him too much MLB exposure.

It wouldn't be a huge problem, they would still have his rights for next year. They'd just have to keep Elvis on the 25 man for one day at the start of next season then they could send him down like normal.
