Slade Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 And how exactly would you "renovate" the Skydome?? Number 1 start with seats that actually face the field and where normal people can actually sit without feeling cramped or knees in the back of someone's head. Don't delude yourself expecting a new stadium it's not happening.

The seats give you a great angle for....the jumbotron. Reduce the capacity to 42,000 to 45,000 by re-configuring the seats. Make the seats green, install a dirt warning track. I don't hate the dome as much as others. I think you can improve the experience a lot through renovations.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 Why the f*** would you make the seats green? 16 of 30 stadiums in the majors have green seats. In a concrete building like the dome, adding items that resemble nature is a good idea IMO. http://stadiumpage.blogspot.com/2010/02/seat-colors.html

It was also originally called the Skydome and the most "natural" the landscape gets from the inside looking out is when the sky is clear blue, which is an effect exaggerated by the blue seats which become contiguous with the sky. I get the green seat thing mostly because it's toned down, but I think it makes more sense to just tone down the blue a bit for the updated seating for the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Stadium Dome. The current shade of blue is pretty stark when the seats are empty.

The only way out of this is a total refurbishment, and thats also not easy to do. People wanna see more open sky, plus natural grass, plus a bunch of other things. I just dont see how they can do all that

I just remember the board discussing the potential upgrades/renovation previously and seat colour was a topic. I think someone did a rendering of what green seats would look like and it was pretty slick.
Ex Player Verified Member Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 Reduce the capacity to 42,000 to 45,000 by re-configuring the seats I think it would take more than 3,000 seats
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 I think it would take more than 3,000 seats The capacity is closer to 50K right now I think. He's saying bring it from that down to 42-45K. So 5-8K reduction.
Ex Player Verified Member Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 The capacity is closer to 50K right now I think. He's saying bring it from that down to 42-45K. So 5-8K reduction I read that wrong. So yeah 5 to 8K would probably do it. Thats quite a bit of revenue lost though, which means they have to make it up by raising ticket prices again, which not all people might wanna pay if the Jays happen to suck that year. And then there's the biggest beef that people have, they want grass and they wanna see more sky and less cement. I have no idea how they would that unless they tear down large parts of the stadium, which is gonna be expensive, which means they have to raise ticket prices even more to cover the costs (unless sponsors or the City pitches in)
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 Thats quite a bit of revenue lost though... No it's f***ing not. Even in 2016, the average attendance was like 42,000. What is it this year, 20,000?

Do the math, thats a lot of revenue lost on poor attendance. Now add less seats, plus what if the rebuild doesnt go well and Jays suck. Even more revenue lost on ticket sales

Even more revenue lost on ticket sales They should actually shrink the seats and make some standing room only sections so the capacity is 80,000. Think of all the additional revenues!

I honestly haven't heard the "casuals" ever complain about stuff like that. Also, don't forget that Rogers makes their money from the Jays as content providers, everything they make at the stadium is a bonus on top of the TV revenues.

That is what is ugly and bland cement. Upper lever might even get a sunroof or just open air (can't say i actually remember the configuration now and if that is possible). 1st level will get opened up a bit with some patios which are outside. I don't know if it is even possible but those are the kinds of changes that Cleveland did
Ex Player Verified Member Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 First off, who are these people that want grass and more sky? I honestly haven't heard the "casuals" ever complain about stuff like that I've heard lots of people whine about it. And even if some are casuals, they are still fans who buy tickets. I'm iffy on the whole thing, I still somewhat like the dome but I wouldnt mind if it was replaced with something better Also, don't forget that Rogers makes their money from the Jays as content providers, everything they make at the stadium is a bonus on top of the TV revenues Sure, but 8,000 less seats is still a lot of money, even for Rogers. I dont know what exactly the average BJ ticket costs, but lets assume its around $30. 8,000 X $30 X 81 games = about $20 million annually. You can sign a decent SP for that
Ex Player Verified Member Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 I dont know if this is true, but I read somewhere you cant grow grass in the dome because the design doesnt allow for enough sunlight

You can sign a decent SP for that Like Laika said, that's only assuming those seats would actually be bought. Rogers doesn't get money for the seats when they're empty, which, on average, they were even in 2016. This year, they could remove those seats while costing themselves essentially nothing, aside from maybe opening day. There's also the possibility that more comfort might cause a few more people to actually come to the game who otherwise wouldn't.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 The likelihood of us making big moves/signings this off-season are slim, but one guy I would love the Jays to go after is Nick Castellanos. He just turned 27 this year and is a double's machine, would fit in well with the kids. Bichette Castellanos Guerrero Jr That could potentially be the best 1-3 in baseball in a couple years.

You can sign a decent SP for that A lot of games the cheapest ticket prices is over $30 while in 15/16 it was $15. The Jays with their current ticket price strategy aren't going to be selling the stadium out even when they get to be pretty good. May as well take out a bunch of seats and make it a better experience for those attending the game.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2019 Posted August 30, 2019 I dont know if this is true, but I read somewhere you cant grow grass in the dome because the design doesnt allow for enough sunlight That, plus there's no drainage. You have to water grass, and that water has to go somewhere...
