Jays are probably heeding some medical advice on Vlad. Which would also explain the Jays push for Vlad to spend the offseason training in FL

Hoping Vlad's first taste of failure (relatively, of course) motivates him in the offseason. His athleticism isn't the issue, but being better prepared physically can only make him better on both sides of the ball.

Alford may not be dead after all. The last 90 days Alford hitting .340/419/.510 with plus speed and plus defense. 1 for 2 with a double today! Keep it coming big fella.

Whats going on with Devon Travis?? Still injured I presume??

He hasnt played 1 inning yet in 2019

I don’t even think the Vlad off days has a whole lot to do with his weight, and I don’t mind them at all. The team isn’t competing and lots of hitting prospects his age, or even older, are in their first year of full season pro ball.

I don't see why you would let a guy with the size strength and speed of Alford waste a way without giving him a look. We have a 2 man bench right now. It's not like there isn't a spot for him. It's beyond baffling why he isn't up with the big league club. I mean we want to lose now anyways, so what's the harm in bringing him up. If he happens to show well, you build value and have options.

I haven't written off Alford. As a minimum, he should be a quality 4th outfielder.

 

Anyone know if he has big splits? If he could be a lefty masher who can play LF, CF & RF - that could add a lot of value. He does need to stay healthy though.

I guess all those option years magically vanished on their own! Wow, someone should inform MLB of this mistake. How can Alford accrue service time while never playing in the majors?!

 

On that note, what does everyone think about bringing back Travis Snider? We need to see what we've got with him. You can't just give up on him because he sucks, he's strong and stuff and that matters.

That’s not how options work. If he’s on the 40 and spends 20 days (I think) in the minors then that uses up an “option year”. So a player can burn an option if they are on the 40 but don’t even spend one day in the majors.

Yeah. Only way to have a player on the 40 and not burn an option is to have them in the big leagues all year (or almost all year).

Even weirder - although Pujols has never been sent to the minors so technically has all his options left, he has over 5 years service time so would have to consent to be sent down. So effectively he doesn’t have any options left.

If you came on here and said he sucks because I don't like this in his swing, or these are the things on the defensive side he does that I don't like. He does this on the base paths and for these reasons, he sucks. If you came on here and said his numbers suggest he sucks because of these reasons that would be one thing. Instead you come on here and say I'm the smartest man on the planet and have declared that he sucks.

 

It's really hard to judge whether young players are good or whether a young player sucks. Professional executives get this wrong all the time. There are things in Alford's swing that I wasn't in love with in the limited amount of time we saw him.

 

I have no clue what sort of adjustments he may have made. He has a .936 OPS in his last 167 plate appearances. Maybe he has made some adjustments. It would be one thing internally if you have concluded a guy sucks and you can't take away at bats from guys who you believe in more, but we have a 2 man bench. There are at bats to be had for him. It seems like awful asset management to not at least test your hypothesis that a guy sucks and not give him some time at the mlb level given our current situation.

Injury legit or just hidding I wonder. With all the movement in our pitching ranks I actually wouldn't mind seeing him get some sheltered low leverige innings.
