BTS Community Moderator Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Travis, you have got to be fking kidding me. He's playing?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 He's playing? I would imagine he's just expressing frustration about Travis' latest injury news.
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 So I'm looking at the 40-man to see who might get the boot to make room for Buttholes, and the roster on their website has 41 guys, which someone called Gunnar Heidt having been added. I'm assuming this is a mistake considering that he's 26 and has been terrible in AA the last two years? I'm sure nobody cares, but he was removed from the team's 40-man roster list on their site, so it looks like it was a mistake. Have they announced who's getting gut for Buttholes?

Have they announced who's getting gut for Buttholes? I'm pretty sure the signing isn't official yet, same with the Bud Norris one (although he's a minor league deal). I believe it's possible to place players on the 60-day DL already so I'm thinking either David Phelps gets placed there right away or we remove one of Biagini/Travis/Jonathan Davis/Richard Ureña.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 First game I will get to watch this year... Nice to have on TV.

Yeah as soon as we can put players on the 60 day DL Phelps should go on there. I don't think he's expected back until midway through the season right? I don't see Urena getting removed he has a decent chance to make the Opening Day roster IMO if Travis is hurt. Once Vlad Jr. comes up he'd probably get optioned back to AAA though.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 We are starting to face a roster crunch though. We need to make a move now for Buccholz but Norris is basically a lock to make the team IMO so we'll have to change something for him too.

Like you and Org say, Phelps to the 60-day for Buchholz makes sense, but Norris seems like a near lock to make the team and that's going to be an interesting choice. There are only a few real options left: Luciano - has looked good so far, and I think they'l keep him around Urena - probably not even really an option given the lack of infield depth and Travis' injury Pompey - sucks and out of options Davis - sucks and has options I guess we could also see a Morales DFA, but that would be a bit of a surprise.

Not much point keeping Gaviglio on the 40 man either, even though he has an option left.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 JDavis should be jettisoned, he's just taking up space in the Buffalo OF
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Not much point keeping Gaviglio on the 40 man either, even though he has an option left. Gaviglio is much more useful than someone like Biagini. He'd very likely get claimed if he was dropped off the 40-man, not that we'd lose sleep over it but it wouldn't be the best asset management.
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Is Gaviglio tangibly worse than Ryan Borucki?

BTS Community Moderator Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Yes I'm not really convinced. Gaviglio has been better in AAA, and was arguably better in the majors last year. I think he's worth keeping around, especially given that he has an option. If the team ever does go with an opener for a rotation spot, he's the kind of guy who can come in after and give you 3-4 acceptable innings.

That would be a good role for him, though I really dislike the opener until someone shows they need it. Also, I dont think Gavigilo was close to Borucki in any way last year

Also, I dont think Gavigilo was close to Borucki in any way last year Gaviglio had better strikeout, walk and groundball rates in more innings, in both the majors and the minors. Unless you can somehow prove that Borucki has a skill for suppressing homeruns, or an elite control of the running game, then Gaviglio was better than Borucki in pretty much every skill that matters and he has reasonable control over.

Also, I dont think Gavigilo was close to Borucki in any way last year Gaviglio struck out more guys, walked fewer, and induced a few more ground balls. I get that he's 5 years older than Borucki and doesn't throw as hard, so we can still dream on Borucki being becoming a rotation mainstay, but Gaviglio handled himself well last year. Until Borucki actually does take that next step (or Gaviglio loses another tick on his fastball) these aren't dissimilar arms as far as utility and ability.

Maico450 Verified Member Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 After 17 starts in 2018, Borucki ERA 3.87, Gaviglio ERA 5.08. Not that I am suggesting that this is a huge difference, but sometimes keeping runs off the board is helpful.

And how likely there are to keep that pace up.

Who gives a sh$it about K rates and ground ball % etc when ACEucki had 11 QS in 17 starts... In this day and age with long pens and starters only expected to go 5, the days of Halladay's CG games long behind us, I want a pitcher who can give me a QS. A QS means that the team has a chance to win and reasonably supports the pen set up. Yes, Estrada had 11 QS also, but he had like 50 more innings and 11 more starts. The fact of the matter is ACEucki was the best SP on the team in 2018. ACEoucki had 3 more QS than Happ while he was a BJ and Happ had 3 more starts. Gaviglio had 4, QS in 24 starts.. Trying to compare ACEucki and Sam a Ray I was a Blue Jay I am, is nonsensical.

We didn't sign him, Seattle did. It took me longer than I am proud to admit to realize he was talking about Borucki.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 Holy f***... Aceucki is worse than Gurribabip, check yourself. How the heck did Gurribabip enter this conversation? Are the Jays trying to convert him to an outfielder and starting pitcher??

He's referring to the shamefully idiotic nickname you're trying to force on us all for some reason. Both are equally terrible.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 4, 2019 Posted March 4, 2019 He's referring to the shamefully idiotic nickname you're trying to force on us all for some reason. Both are equally terrible. It is a metaphor for the fact he was our ACE last year and people on here are trying to argue Gaviglio is better then Borucki, Richards should a ML spot before Borucki, Borucki should start in AAA. There is not benefit to the best pitcher on our staff in 17 starts to start in AAA. No learning curve benefit and does not reward a player for performance, (there is no contractual reasons like Vlad). It would absolutely be a travesty if he does not get one of the 5 spots, just on principal and optics.
