Ray Verified Member Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 Return is fine, more surprising is who he was traded to. Cards have some holes and Molina will be 37 come July. This is a very un-Cards like move. They've done this before with guys like Heyward and Matt Holliday.

This is a very un-Cards like move. I think that is kind of the point for the Cards. Molina is 37 and several of their players hit FA (or big money options) in 2021. They have a 2 year window to make the playoffs. They probably have more injury risk than anyone, but they will probably be projected into a playoff spot. Plus it gives Knizner a year working with Molina and the big league pitchers to see if he has what it takes to be a big league catcher (Everything I just said about Varsho is true of Knizner, but he's 23 instead of 20)
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 They've done this before with guys like Heyward and Matt Holliday. If a team is in a competitive division and dips below 90 wins, Jim believes they should tear it down and trade for 20 year olds.

This is a very un-Cards like move. It should be noted that fangraphs rated Andrew Kizner as their second best prospect and a 50 FV. He's a 23 year old catcher who did well in AA and got a handful of games in AAA to finish the season. Probably not much worse than Kelly in their eyes, and by their valuations they might even have preferred him as he will have options.

Nah, was just saying that historically the Cards have avoided these types of moves. From your post, I guess you agree with the Jays holding JD last offseason.

From your post, I guess you agree with the Jays holding JD last offseason. I do from a business sie. You don't lead the league in attendance and trade your star in a non-baseball city. From a baseball side I probably move him two off seasons ago. Now they have sucked for two years and they have effectively put the Jays casuals on the Baby Jays bandwagon. Now is the time to trade the popular players

I don't think Goldy is going to be looking for another team-friendly extension after being criminally underpaid his entire career. I'm not saying he's going for the Cano deal but I'm sure he's going to be looking to get paid very well.

Dammit Jim, I was just about to make a snarky post saying the D-Backs should get tips from how we handled Donaldson's departure.

King Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2018 Author Posted December 6, 2018 Hasn't really been mentioned in this thread but Andy Young will probably be a big leaguer in some capacity.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 Andy was our third baseman my junior year of university. Lots of pop but likely limited to 2B/3B even though he’s seen time at short. Bat first prospect without a true defensive home, the kind of guy who STL continues to make hay off of.

I read that he was from ND but didn't know he was a Jamestown guy originally (doesn't show that in his baseballcube page) that's cool. P.S. Shouldn't you be at the Curling right now?

P.S. Shouldn't you be at the Curling right now? Played his freshman year and then transferred to Neo-Sho (then to Indiana) as it was apparent he was too good to be at UJ. I’d say it ended up working out pretty well for him. I was there at 7 am this morning as that’s my home base (4th year with the junior A team). Trade to catch Homan walking down the hallways but couldn’t get eyes on her. Had lunch with Epping in our lounge instead. Flying out to Toronto tomorrow morning to catch the Leafs and then Miami to watch the Patriots otherwise I’d be watching Rachel vs Jennifer
