P2F Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 I thought this was deserving of its own thread. According to Shi Davidi, multiple league sources have indicated that the Blue Jays have now trimmed their once-large pool of aspiring replacement managers down to five. The identity of the finalists couldn’t be confirmed, although according to multiple industry sources, Joe Espada (the Houston Astros bench coach), David Bell (the San Francisco Giants’ farm director), Rocco Baldelli (the Tampa Bay Rays’ major-league field co-ordinator), and Brandon Hyde (the Chicago Cubs’ bench coach), are believed to be among them. While that's only four of the five accounted for, I love that none of the curmudgeonly geriatrics - guys like Girardi, Matheny, Showalter, Wedge, etc. - are seemingly being strongly considered here. These are all rookie managers, which indicates to me that the FO likely values a manager that possesses a willingness to adapt to and employ new analytically-based strategies. It's kind of exciting that things appear as though they will materialize this way. Ross Atkins out there just doin' his thing. It still sucks that there will be no more Gibby, but this is shaping up to look pretty good, all things considered. Relevant. glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 I'd like to poach some coaches from the Astros org. They seem to be ahead of the curve in a lot of areas. Joe Espada is my pick.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 No retreads, and all 37-46 years old. Seems like a solid pool.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Looking forward to their decision. Seems unlikely that anyone will be disappointed in whatever direction they go.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Espada head coach, Baldelli bench coach? Why settle for just one?

In other words, is Schneider still in the running? Thanks
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 You guys think Schneider and Clapp are one of the remaining 5?

Ray Verified Member Posted October 16, 2018 Posted October 16, 2018 Joe Espada would be my first pick, but I'd be happy with Rocco Baldelli as well.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Espada would be a good pick. Young and bilingual, forward thinking with a good pedigree via the Yanks and Astros. Rumour is that the Twins and Rangers are both interested in him as well. Hopefully Shatkins can sell him on our upside vs the other teams.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Rocco Baldelli would be a great choice in my opinion. He has been in charge of implementing a lot of the forward thinking ideas that keep the Rays ahead of the curve
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2018 Author Posted October 22, 2018 It could be in my head, but it feels like things are beginning to line up for Joe Espada to be named the next manager of the Blue Jays.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2018 Author Posted October 22, 2018 Espada is a, “good package overall. Bilingual, bicultural, really good understanding of traditional aspects of the game as well as the new aspects of the game”, said Luhnow. The fact that he's bilingual may give Espada an edge over the other candidates.

Definitely the same vibe I got when I saw the list of final candidates, just seems like he's the guy.
