BTS Community Moderator Posted September 6, 2018 Author Posted September 6, 2018 Some interesting questions to be answered: - Solarte should almost certainly be bought out. He's terrible, and with Vlad looming and quite a few similar infielders on the roster, there's no reason to invest 4.75M in him. - Pompey, Barnes, and Guerrieri will be out of options and haven't yet established themselves in the majors. Will be interesting to see how that is handled. - Will the team carry 3 catchers? Overall, the pitching staff is a tire fire, but the depth of positional players, while lacking star power after Vlad, is actually pretty impressive on the 40-man. There are a lot of players there who look like major league contributors.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Smoak's option is a no brainer, as is not exercising Solarte's so that 2 easy decisions to me. No need to bring back Marco or Clippard. Honestly, there's no real hard decisions on the roster right now. The hardest decision will be what FA pitcher(s) to sign for 2-3 years. Actually hang on, I think the hardest decision will be wheteher they keep both Drury and Travis. Guerreri, Barnes and Pompey aren't anyone to lose sleep over if they have to cut bait. Neither is Maile really with McGuire there. Anyone know who is Rule 5 eligible if not added?

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 IMO the most interesting thing about this offseason is how low payroll will go. They could easily spend basically nothing on free agents and fill out the roster with prospects and minimum players. It'd save lots of cash for Rogers, who'd then hope enough promise is shown that the team can be built up again the next year and attendances (and then payroll) go back up. The reluctance to give Donaldson a QO does worry me a bit that Rogers are going to lower payroll. One of our advantages in the last few years was willingness to absorb salary like in the Liriano / Hernandez trade.

Arb projections aren't out yet, but rough math has the 25-man costing about $100M next year if Solarte is bought out. I believe they started 2018 at around $150. They can slash payroll by $25M and still afford a couple of starting pitchers. And Martin and Morales are off the books after 2019.

The draft pick compensation is so much less now for qualified players it means a lot less than it used to. Jays would have had a sandwich pick between rounds 2 and 3.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 6, 2018 Author Posted September 6, 2018 Don't they both have options? Likely a trade regardless. I don't think a trade is necessary if Solarte is bought out. Drury, Travis, and Gurriel all have options. They can make it work, even if Tulo is healthy.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Kevin Vicuna and Jon Harris. Is that it, normally it's a lot more or are you implying just notable guys, Wow! I'm so used to AA's roster crunch year after year, lol.

Hence them moving JD for value above that compensatory pick with the PTBNL(Merryweather).
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 lol... f***, he should be healthy... Recovery time on his surgery is 8-10 months.

They could go either way, I'm on team BTS here, I believe they go after a couple arms. Yup, don't spend anything and we could see a record low payroll. I hope Rogers doesn't decide to do that but I don't think we can rule it out yet.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 The need for pitching is obvious, but I'm most interested to see what they do with the offense. I like the infield depth that we have with Travis, Diaz, Drury, and Gurriel. I think we can let Solarte go and roll with those guys. Once Vlad arrives then we may have to make some decisions. In my opinion, the key to the offseason (on offense) is moving Morales and creating more playing time for youngsters. It's obvious to me that Hernandez is not an acceptable option in the outfield and should be at DH. Let's give him a year there to see if he can develop the bat further. This also allows us to give more at-bats to a 4th outfielder, whether that be Alford or someone from outside the organization. It's important for us to identify the heir apparent to Pillar in this rebuilding time. We've got many of the pieces in place for the next good Jays team (Jansen, Vlad Jr, Bichette, McKinney, Gurriel Jr, maybe Grichuk and Smoak), but CF remains a bit of a question mark. Moving Morales also opens up a bit of cash for more pitching, even if we eat some salary. I think all available payroll should be thrown into the rotation and a bit on the bullpen. Something like Happ-Sanchez-Borucki-Ryu-Stroman would be ideal in my opinion.

Good list of SP's. I'd personally be looking at bringing back Happ on a 2-year deal, and then try for one of Morton, Sabathia, Eovaldi, Gio to fill out the rotation.
mtljaysfan Verified Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 I'd like us to trade Pillar et let Grichuk play CF. He seems to have more promising bat then Pillar.

bendera3 Verified Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 I don't really think any team would roster Vicuna the whole season, and probably not even Jon Harris.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 I don't really think any team would roster Vicuna the whole season, and probably not even Jon Harris. I disagree regarding Harris. He's worth plucking from the Rule 5 draft and installing into a major league team's bullpen. He might even be pretty decent in a relief role. He could work out similarly to Brad Keller.
