This team desperately needs pitching. All this management team does is trade and draft middle infielders. They collect SS and 2nd basemen like my aunt collected beanie babies in the 90s....it's ridiculous.

That's dumb you always trade for the best player you can get, just because we could use more pitching doesn't mean we should focus on only that. Especially considering what the Rangers got for Hammels I think we came out pretty well.

You can bet it wasn't much. The market for rentals just isn't what it used to be. I think people's frustrations with the return on this trade stems from 2 things....

1. The fact that Happ was the Jays best trade chip, which speaks volumes about how the season is going.

2. Unrealistic expectations.

Advanced metrics have pretty much kiboshed the rental return market recently. Even the return the Orioles got for Machado would be considered garbage not too long ago.

Most people who don’t like the trade think that way because:

1. Drury is only an OK utility player.

2. We already have Solarte and Gurriel, and at best Drury is a slight upgrade on either of them.

Princess the Bear is worth $500k now. The key is to get the most value out of your middle infield Princess the Bears.

Everyone is overreacting. We don't have a lot that needs to be added to the 40 man next year (SRF, Forrest Wall being the only two I can think of) with some leaving the roster and lots of pieces that can be dumped with zero consequence. Drury is 25 and not guaranteed a spot but could provide good value

Drury just landed a blue chip pitching prospect in Taylor Widener and more in the offseason. It's not like we can't move him again if the need arises.

Pretty much an industry consensus that Cashman stole Happ. I really would have liked to know what the Brewers were offering.

Where are you getting your information? And to every one else who is upset with the return Atkins got:

https://theathletic.com/444966/2018/07/26/carig-cost-of-doing-business-why-the-yankees-overpaid-for-j-a-happ/

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman found himself locked in a staredown with his Blue Jays counterpart Ross Atkins, who held firm on his demands for left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ. The day before, on a conference call with reporters, Cashman talked up his bullpen and young pitching prospects as a strong fallback in case he couldn’t add a starter. He also tried another tactic with Atkins, harping on Happ’s recent struggles in an effort to lower the price.

Atkins did not budge, and a day later it was Cashman who blinked, trading for Happ despite a price tag that rival executives considered to be a clear overpay for a rental. The Blue Jays received infielder Brandon Drury and outfield prospect Billy McKinney, a return that one exec called “a little luxurious” for the veteran Happ. Another evaluator insisted that Drury alone should have been enough.

Cashman did not dispute the notion of an overpay.

“Cost of doing business,” he told The Athletic

Brian Cashman never trades good prospects, but he moved two pretty decent ones for Drury. Teams seem to value him a lot more than his numbers suggest they should.

I know you guys love your rebuilds...It will be really exciting for you guys when we trade Vlad in 3 or 4 years. Who needs pitching

People just want to see the team go on a sustained run like Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, New York, Boston etc... look poised to do. It's been like 25 years since the Blue Jays have had a healthy organization from top to bottom with a great short- and long- term outlook. If it seems like people 'really like rebuilds', it's because they want to see the team build right from the ground up so that they can become an elite organization over the long term.

This really shouldn't need to be explained in detail, but yes, this.

Is Brandon Drury a better hitter than Devon Travis?

I think the answer to this is generally... maybe? We've all seen that Travis CAN produce at a "plus" level, but he's certainly not doing that now, and he's been unable to stay healthy for any long stretch. Drury seems to have a lot of people who know more about baseball than I do at least reasonably excited.

So going into next year, we have an infield of Solarte, Drury, Guirrel Jr, and Travis. If Solarte gets moved than its Diaz. Smoak is at first unless he is moved. The outfield is Pillar, Hernandez, Grichuk, and hopefully one of the younger guys. Jansen and Martin are catching. Plus you still have Morales bc he isn't going away.

I'm hoping Morales gets his wRC+ high enough by EOS, that we actually are able to move him in the OS for whatever.

I think our starting 9 and Bench going into 2019 will be below:

SS Gurriel Jr

2B Travis

3B Drury

1B Smoak

DH Rotational/Morales

C Jansen

CF Pillar

LF Hernandez

RF Grichuk

Bench

BU Martin

IF Solarte

IF Diaz

4th OF Smith / FA

I expect Vladdy and Bichette to be up no later than July 2019, if they hold them down for that extra year. This will spell the end of 2 of Diaz/Travis/Solarte imo. Drury or LGJ would then take Bench roles with whomever is left, with the other starting at 2B.

I'm really hoping Alford mashes AAA early next year and can come up as well. I also feel we could qualify JD and he may re-sign as a possibility.

If thats the team going into 2019 I'll be disappointed. Vladdy and Bo should be up by late April so at least that would be more exciting.

May as well trade Smoak for whatever you can get instead of him just playing out 2019 if you go into the year with a 75 win team.

Starting pitching we are looking at Sanchez, Stroman, Borucki, SRF, I think Estrada resigns here on a 1 year but lower AAV deal. There isn't really much on the FA unless Happ is resigned. So the majority of the money will be spent on rebuilding the pen.

70-80 win team,

Yeah. Seems about right. Would do a 1yr deal with Happ again if he'd sign with us, rather than Estrada.

I think Foley has a strong 1st full season and proves to be our best SP. I feel we could see Pearson up by July 2019 as well if he comes back strong this season.

Overall, I think 2020 is when we'll be able to compete.

At work it doesn't let me quote but Travis has had a 113 wRC+ since his call up on May 22nd with a .330 OBP. D still sucks.

I agree. I really hope we bring back JD so he can play DH/3B/1B in a rotation with Drury and Smoak until Vlad comes up. If Smoak is traded, JD moving to 1B would be great. I just want an MVP type vet here to help usher in Vlad and Bo. I feel it would be great to help them manage the pressure and fulfill their potential.

Pearson has pitched 1.2 innings this year, 21.2 total innings in the minors. His injury was unfortunate. Even the most aggressive management team would find it hard to put a guy in the majors with so little time. If he hadn't got hurt this year, mid 2019 might have been realistic. It's 2020 for Pearson imo. I agree with you on Marco. I loved the guy, but we need to move on. I would resign Happ, but Marco's body is too beaten up.

Estrada can also teach everyone his changeup before he retires! Worth it!

I find it best to finalize your lineup for next year in July

It’s a subject to discuss on a message board when the current lineup is already out of the playoff race.

Then at least be realistic that there will be about 3 to 10 changes.

Is Happ a free agent after 2018? If so could he sign with TO for 2019? Seems like he was on the last year of his contract.

Yes, and he can't be QO'd, so it wouldn't cost us a draft pick.
