There's still a ton of talent on the board, a lot of guys the Jays were linked to that will be available in the second round.

Singer could want to go back for his senior season. He was pretty firm on going to college when we drafted him out of High School. Unless he gets the number he wants he probably said he will go back to school. Who really knows though. You would think we would have heard about a medical issue by now.

Singer failed some sort of medical which killed the deal. It had nothing to do with him wanting to go to school. He has zero to gain by going back to Florida. He isn't an upside pitcher therefore he's not going any higher next season. Also, his best "tool" is actually the fact that he's incredibly close to being MLB ready, so why the f*** would be waste another season dicking around in college for some non existent chance of getting more money next year?

I dunno man, this Groshans kid looks big, smooth and athletic. Nice swing. f*** drafting pitchers.

What is the general consensus on the Jays first round pick at 12?

So bad that the Jays need to tank again this season and have a redo next year at 12 or better.

Medical was one side of the story. Blue Jays would have signed him at a lesser dollar figure. Plus he never had health problems in college.

He seemed to be one of the safest bets in this draft. Him dropping was a huge shock. He was ranked #1 going into the year. Hes not the first junior pitcher to go back for his senior year because he didn’t get what he wants.

Okay, so I stopped off to pick up some wings on my way home and got home and opened the draft link literally as Manfred was at the podium announcing the Groshans pick. Now that I'm all caught up on this thread and the rest of the board, I thought I'd chime in with my two cents on the pick. With Liberatore, Singer, Gorman, etc. still on the board, it appeared to be a head-scratcher of a selection. But Groshans has seriously sick f***ing bat speed and will play 3B at a minimum, with a chance to stick at SS. He's athletic for a big dude, and posseses a sexy swing with great power to boot. This pick has a chance to end up the steal of the draft, imo.

Not sure if this is posted (can't tell with this board!) but BSN has a SN article on the pick with quotes: https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/2018-mlb-draft-live-blog-commentary-reaction-analysis-blue-jays-picks/

Highlights:

"The Blue Jays have been on Groshans for more than a year and liked how he fared with a wood bat against some high-level competition. “A combination of contact, of power, of plate discipline," Sanders said. "He’s got a great feel and approach at the box. He’s able to drive the ball to all fields and we’re certainly confident his offensive ability will translate to the next level.”

"As for Groshans' defence, the Blue Jays will give him a shot to play shortstop in pro ball. “Jordan is a shortstop and we certainly plan to give him opportunities to play there,” Sanders said. At the same time, it's not like he's necessarily a slam-dunk defender at short. Seems to me they picked him for his bat and if he has to move to third, so be it."

Also, this could mean that the Jays get Groshans at an underslot deal and perhaps try to float another promising player to their second-round selection.

Nah. We have Vladdy 3B/1B (Miggy), Bichette SS (Seager), Kevin Smith 2B (Pedroia), Jansen C (Posey) and now Groshans 3B (Kris Bryant)

Don't forget The Bigg 2B (Biggio).

I wouldn't count out Biggio at 2B. He's overlooked a lot due to who he's playing with, but he's putting up absolutely sick numbers.

Obviously the Jays would have signed him for less, that doesn't mean that the kid will agree, especially when it wasn't an arm issue. Thats the whole point when a kid fails a medical and it pushes him to school: kid expects 'X' amount which is agreed on, now the team wants to give you significantly less.

Singer hasn't been anywhere near number 1 for months. He's a two pitch guy who's stuff has kind of flatlined, and his delivery is controversial. It's simply not a very high upside profile. He's not going back to school, nor would it make any sense for him to do so when he could be pitching in the Majors sometime next season.

I don’t disagree with anything you said. I was honestly just thinking of reasons why he would drop so far without any obvious medical issues reported by anyone.

I have followed him pretty closely since we didn’t sign him. He loves Florida all this guy does is Fish, Golf, and play Baseball. I was just thinking of all scenarios that’s all.

He will sign and move quickly.

In his draft analysis Jim Callis had this to say about Groshams

12. Toronto Blue Jays: SS Jordan Groshans, Magnolia (Texas) HS

Groshans has some of the best raw power in this Draft, and what I really like about it is he knows he doesn't have to sell out for home runs. He makes a lot of hard contact, and there's room to add a lot of strength to his 6-foot-4 frame, so he's gonna do a lot of damage. Groshans may get the opportunity to play shortstop as he breaks into pro ball, but he projects as a third baseman in the long run.

The Singer and Liberatore slide indicates likely medicals and signability respectively.
This happens every single year. I don't know why anyone is surprised by this.
