Would we use part of Vladdy's eligibility on a wasted year? If so, there's absolutely 0 point to calling him up. He's not going to change the starting pitching, and several other holes the team has. We'd just be using service time that would hurt the club later on. Let's think of the big picture here.

Do you want him coming north after ST next year? Because calling him up now and calling him up then will make no difference in terms of his controllability except in the latter case he'll be a super 2. So, calling him up now makes more financial sense than calling him up after ST next year.

Depends if he's up as of day 1 or not.

If he's up as of Day 1 and never sees the minors again, he would lose a year of control, and would not be super 2 because he would never have more than 2 and less than 3 YOS.

That would be dumb as hell by the Jays though and has about 0 chance of happening

I was assuming a September callup

I think Vlad will be coming up in June.

When you see Sportsnet showing Vlad highlights from AA, you can tell the Rogers media machine is trying to get the fans pumped up. I don't think they'd do it if he wasn't gonna be called up until next year or even September.

Not happening. Burning a year of control when this team is trash is what gets GMs fired. Trade assets for prospects and bring them in together.

Why the hell is he still in AA? I can only think they are trying to stretch out his milb career.

With Bo heating up, I could see them both going to AAA for a month soon and then the Majors in July/August

Bo can spend all year in AA and AAA and come up in April 2019, thanks.

I can’t even think of one good reason.

Maybe they are hoping he gets hurt.

Bo is heating up? He's 2 for his last 17. (Didn't check today)

Last 10 games... hitting .553 with the same amount of HR as walks and strikeouts.... 4

21 hits.... 7 multihit games. ...

He's nearly hitting .500 for all of May ffs

Inconceivable or Inevitable: when Vlad Jr. hits the open market, the Boston Red Sox will offer him a 10-year contract worth HALF A BILLION DOLLARS.

This. I don't see any reason at all to give up the extra year of control. Bo isn't knocking at the proverbial MLB door.

I think this is going to be one of my few major gripes with Shatkins. They are far too rigid with prospect timelines and move them along far too slowly for my liking. Acuna didn't suffer, Soto didn't suffer, and Vlad is arguably a better hitter than both. Why are they being employed as difference makers in MLB while the superior (arguably) Vlad is stuck in AA at the same age?

f*** off Atkins, stop being such a square.

Could this debate between whether or not to burn a year of control be settled by negotiating a long term contract with him upon bringing him up? Would either side be comfortable with a 10 year 150mill offer?

Vlad would be, the Jays wouldn't be.

10/150 is way too high given the cost certainty of 4 years at MLB minimum and 3 arb years with only 3 FA years to worry about. There would be no reason go anywhere near that high.

Kingery was just signed for what could turn out to be a total of 9 years 66 million if all options are picked up. I get that Vlad is a much better prospect than Kingery, but he's not 1 year and 90 million better.

There's still significant risk with any guaranteed deals to a guy who has never swung at a major league pitch, no matter how amazing his minor league numbers are.

I would do 10/100 though, assuming the last 4 are team options in the 15-20 range. 6/40 for his first years is nothing to sneeze at.

Donaldson, who was a Super 2 guy, ended up earning about 56 million over his arb deal years. 6/40 for unproven talent is plenty, and still probably a bit high.

I'd like to see it though just because I'd rather see the young guys get paid while they are great rather than having to wait until they're 30+ and declining to try and lock down a long term massive deal

Has the Super 2 cutoff passed? There is no way you can wait until Late April 2019 so you may as well bring him up now. I'd rather see him for 4 months this year than 3.

No, super 2 cutoff usually isn't until mid to late June depending on the year

those teams are contenders. anyone thinking this jays team is a contender is a half wit.

Jim, stop referring to everyone who disagrees with you as a half wit when most people here would use that descriptor for you.

There's significant risk in giving guaranteed $ to a 19 year old kid too. Does he take defense and his weight/shape as seriously if he has $100 Million in back pocket. What about all the distractions Toronto has to offer. (They'll be there anyway but having all that money at such a young age adds to it).

I still would be in favour of signing him now given that you could be looking at $40-$50 Million per FA year once he hits FA but all factors the FO puts into consideration I'm sure. No way he signs for 6/40 with $20M club options though.
