Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 We need to screw with Vlad's service time. I also highly doubt that his defense is MLB ready anyway. I think May of next year is the time to call him up.

Barring some kind of injury he will no doubt be up this year (knocks on wood). Depending how competitive we are it could be early as July and at the latest September. He will definitely be on the opening day lineup next year.

That wouldn't be great asset management. We'd basically lose a year of control. Just have Solarte start at 3rd for a month and then bring him up.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 They do if the feeling isn't mutual because the term and/or dollars don't work. ... And I don't think this is a playoff calibre team. We don't have the slightest clue what the team is offering and what the player is willing to take. Both sides have stated multiple times that they want to make a deal As for your second point: - The core of this roster has made the playoffs in two of the last 3 seasons. - This is the best start we have had in any of those seasons. - Fangraphs projections have us as a playoff calibre club (or very close, depending on how you define it).
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 ahh, i'm not too familiar with how all that stuff works, good to know though. Basically you get players for 6 years of team control before they hit FA. It has to be a full 6 years, can't round up much . So if we hold him out for a month next year, 6 seasons after that he'll have 5.5 years of service time or whatever and we get him for a full extra year.

This FO might be different but, historically, the Jays haven't given much credence to the extra year of service.None of Stroman,Sanchez,Osuna, or Travis were held back.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 To be more specific about service time... A player can earn a maximum of 172 days of service time in any season. 172 days = 1 year of service time. There are actually ~187 days in the MLB regular season. So if a player is up for 172 of them, they are deemed to have played a full year. A player with 6.000 years of service time (or more) becomes a free agent. If a rookie breaks camp with the team and play 6 full seasons, at the end of season 6 they'll be at 6.000 years of service. If a team keeps a rookie down for just a few weeks in year one, then they might be at, say 5.170 in service time at the end of "year 6" and the club will end up getting 6 years and 170 days of the dude's life. If Toronto does this with Vlad so blatantly he will probably become part of a growing labour grievance

Point 1 is false. JB and EE were core parts of the playoff teams. And to a lesser extent, younger and healthier Martin and Tulo. Point 2 is virtually meaningless. Only a handful of games have been played. Point 3, ok, but then a lot of knowledgeable baseball folks have expressed skepticism about the Jays chances.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Oh please a 10 day DL stint announcement proves nothing. I guarantee you that feelers were put out on Donaldson but in a market where Moose got a one year deal for 6.5 mil I wonder how much Donaldson would have even have fetched. We still have the deadline to move him anyway. Good point A 21M one year rental...
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 2 more hits for vlad.... plus a walk
CraigG Verified Member Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 (edited) 2 more hits for vlad.... plus a walk If we are contending mid season... and those guys in AA are still raking.... get them the f*** up. It is easy to fit them in the everyday lineup. Dump Morales off a the local McD's... Donaldson and Vlad alternate DH/3B duties as needed... bodes well for Donaldson's "dead arm". Put Diaz on backup duties and let Bo take the reins. As good as Diaz has looked his HR/FB is not sustainable and he doesn't have one BB in 39 PA. Dump Grisuck off at the nearest airport on a flight to Japanese leagues. Get Jonathan Davis up to backup/alternate OF and pinch run. His speed and plate discipline are awesome weapons to have. Yes. It might suck for the players to have to accumulate 6 (or in some cases close to 7) years before they hit free agency, but I think it helps competitive balance. If players hit FA earlier then obviousy the small market teams couldn't keep them as long.

The Cubs did it with Kris Bryant in 2015, and the Braves are doing it with Ronald Acuna now. Teams will take any advantage they can.

I think that the Braves will wait even longer.

Who's going to get us the best prospects.
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 so who do you think we could trade Donaldson again? Who's going to get us the best prospects. Donaldson may have a down year in which case you are better of offering him say 4/100, which is more than any other team will offer.

I wouldn't have a plm whatsoever moving him to the Yankees if the Jays are floundering at .500 or under at the break. Yankees would surely pay a reasonable rent to upgrade 3B
