Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Last I read, opening day was still a possibility for Tulowitzki. I would bet on him playing the first week or so of the season and then going on the DL and not returning until like July.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 (edited) Different looking bench ... meaning... A useful one? -.2 fWAR from those 1146 PAs is vomit inducing. They would project this year as the same, below replacement level. Their replacements project nearly 3 fWAR in about 750 PAs. Anyone trying to say this year's bench is worse (and I know that wasn't your stance by posting that tweet), is a f***ing lunatic. Edited February 27, 2018 by John_Havok

Yeah that’s what the tweet means, showing how much those 3 had to play last year.
CraigG Verified Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 1.4 WAR over the last two seasons (600 AB) with scattered playing time. He's still a bargain.

I have no problem with Carrera as a 4th outfielder, and his salary reflects that role. The issue in the last few years is that he's had to play more than was ideal. Our new found depth solved that, but meant that basically he or Pearce became superfluous. Carrera is out of options, while Pearce gives depth at 1B and DH (his better positions) and has a much higher guaranteed salary so if Pearce couldn't be traded then Carrera is the one who is unlucky.
Nafro Verified Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 I wonder if they’d prefer to pay him 300k to go away or 1.9M to wait a month or two in AAA then come up. The first one.

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 No one is talking about the new signing?

No team has ever gone from contender to non contender based on the talent of a reserve outfielder, but if you're talking about an ideal roster I'd want 4 outfielders and at least one utility player. I think most people would agree Carrera has had too big a role the last few years which I assume is the point you're trying to make..
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Here is a live look in to how the Blue Jays dealt with Carrera.... Harsh. http://www.reactiongifs.com/r/0wK.gif

Yeah I have always thought he'd be best suited for the NL where teams use an extra bench spot and will sometimes carry 5 OFers. He could be the 25th man where he could pinch run, pinch hit, bunt, etc.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Carrera had some huge moments for us in the 2016 playoffs. If it wasn't for him, there is no chance we win that WC game against Baltimore that year. Obvious move is obvious but he had some positive contributions for us that can't be forgotten.

Yeah he was grouped in with Goins as replacement level talent that shouldn't have ever been on the team but he never deserved that. Much better player.
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Yeah he was grouped in with Goins as replacement level talent that shouldn't have ever been on the team but he never deserved that. Much better player. He draws the ire of fans because he is such a poor fundamental player. Throws to the wrong base all the time, takes ridiculously bad routes to fly balls, bunts at the most inopportune times (especially considering he isn't a terrible hitter and actually has a decent chance of getting on base) He is certainly a decent player, much more deserving of a roster spot than Goins, but I can totally see where the equal frustration comes from and personally I couldn't be happier to see him go
Shart Verified Member Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 The OF depth is so fantastic. Almost too fantastic... Calm down cowboy. Lots of OFs doesn't mean we have quality OFs.

BTS Community Moderator Posted March 2, 2018 Author Posted March 2, 2018 So they're still paying him the full $1.9M. A bit surprised they didn't cut ties to save the cash.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Yeah, at this point he is our 6th/7th OF. I would rather just roll with Teoscar or Alford if we really need to dip that far into the depth chart.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 So they're still paying him the full $1.9M. A bit surprised they didn't cut ties to save the cash. What the f***. So Hernandez, Pompey, Alford, DSJ and Carrera in AAA? At this point he's taking AB's away from AAA players who deserve them more. I wonder if they think they need more time for a trade they have in the works?

I mean two of those guys have extensive injury histories and DSJ is just a random utility player so it's fine if he's not getting a ton of reps at LF or whatever. It's just depth, last year our entire outfield died and we literally had no one, it's expensive as depth that you're probably not going to use and is like your 7th best option but it's depth regardless.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Maybe it's not the point yet where they have to cut him to save on all his salary? When is the deadline for that? Perhaps it's later this spring.
