Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 Crybaby Shatkins fanboys can't handle even a little bit of criticism! The Morales contract sucked the day the ink dried and it sucks even worse now!
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 I don't really have an issue with the signing of Morales. Its giving him 3 guaranteed years which was the confusing move. They were seemingly bidding against themselves in a market that had no demand. I would love to have Adam Lind back right now.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 Someone like Adam Lind is an ideal fit for DH IMO. He's a platoon bat who's thrives vs. RHP. That gives you flexibility platoon him and rotate your top regular players through the DH vs. LHP. He's also serviceable enough to play 1st to give your starter a day off and can come off the bench and provide some power late in games (on days he doesn't start). I'm not a huge fan of the full time DH.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 Hey instead of bitching about how our front office spent $11M last season for a -0.6 WAR DH, and then pointing to Alonso's contract and lumping 1B/DH together, how about we re-frame this pissbaby bitchfest and say our front office spent $15.1M last season for our 2.8 WAR 1B & DH! Because you can't piss and moan about Morales out of one side of your mouth without giving this same FO credit for Smoak's bargain contract. That's a net expenditure of $5.4M per WAR, which is an excellent rate of return. Suck s***, crybabies. Thanks, now there's no need for my response.
Ray Verified Member Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 We will trade him for Ian Kennedy and Brandon Maurer. Or Morales + for Hammel. That would not be terrible if we could get the Royals to eat $15M off that contract. Then it becomes $34M over 3 years compared to $23M over 2 years for Kendrys Morales, with Brandon Maurer as the equalizer for the extra year we're eating.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2018 Author Posted August 22, 2018 Morales > Edwin, and at a cheaper cost too. The one black mark on this FO's resume has been erased. Except, you know, all those unilateral sell-now fantasy trade scenarios that the armchair QBs come up with on here. Like how the team should have traded Donaldson on June 15th, 2017 at 12:25pm to a contender for three top 10 prospects.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Morales is basically hitting now like we hoped he would when we signed him. Still overpaid but not useless. If this is Shatkins' worst signing, then yeah, we alright.

When he cools off a bit, it will be more of the same old Kendrys.

Morales was a 131 and 111 wRC+ hitter the two seasons prior to us signing him. He's hitting 115 wRC+ this season. To me, that would indicate that his 97 wRC+ season last year is the obvious outlier, not whatever he's doing now. Is he a superstar hitter? Obviously not, but this is what they were expecting when they signed him, and its in line with his career ability.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Morales + Gurriel, don't forget. Blue Jays run a pretty expensive mentorship program. Morales mentoring LGJ for $12M in 2019 Martin mentoring Jansen for $20M in 2019 Tulo mentoring Bichette for $38M (including buyout) through 2020 They should just leave Vlad Jr. alone hes doing fine all by himself.
tazsub3 Verified Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Wouldn't have got Gurriel without Morales. I'm reasonably sure of that considering we gave Kendrys 3 years. Most likely Wasserman was holding Gurriel as leverage to get Kendrys a bigger deal. Makes perfect sense. it was the price to pay for gurriel, and as of today fully worth it
wamco Verified Member Posted August 23, 2018 Posted August 23, 2018 Gm said morales could have been had for 2 years but would have been a higher AAV

It was largely forgettable. Then he goes on a 7 day tear and boosts the overall august. We're still talking about a guy that might crack 1 WAR IF he stays hot and doesn't go on another extended slump. However, I hope to hell he stays hot and maybe some team will get desperate and maybe take him off our hands before the Aug 31 deadline.... and if not, maybe in the offseason. Probably wishful thinking though. We're likely stuck with him through next season so while I will definitely hope for the best, I'm not expecting it.
