Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Furiously masturbating to this signing right now in my bed while I eat sour patch kids. Aledmys Diaz, Yangervis Solarte, and Curtis Granderson is a dream offseason so far. All aboard the Saber Train! ... next stop, nearly competing for a Wild Card spot.

In these three moves by replacing Goins, Barney, Bautista: 1. Spent less money 2. Got better players 3. Did not get older 4. Got players with long and/or complex foreign names that drunk Buck will hilariously mispronounce Bonus: If there is anybody lamenting the chicken scratch that the Jays gave up, the money saved plus Granderson could probably net a very decent prospect similar to the Liriano/Hernandez trade last season, assuming the Jays are out of it. This is a win all around, except for Marcus Stroman's morale.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Another negative: I found a female Jays fan on Twitter who said something like "why not just sign Jose". Like three people replied that Granderson is better. Then she replied to her own tweet and said "zomg the mansplaining" and then "I officially don't miss baseball anymore" So I had to see that on Twitter and to be honest that's a pretty big negative.

I see that as a positive. Now there's no chance of bumping into her at a game, because that would be sexual assault.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Just took a look at the free agent list (holy s*** it sucks), and I’ll change my prediction of who the Jays sign next from Gomez to Maybin. Not because I want it but because it’s likely going to be a really cheap one year deal, while Gomez might be more expensive or more than one year (or both). I’ll take the cheapo off season over a Morales type signing any day.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Thank you! I'm sick of non MLB players in our outfield.
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 The signing raised our projections by 1 Win. We are now projected to win 84 games We should aim to get to 86 Wins and then just roll the dice on what will be an interesting season
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Ultimately any success next season depends on a Sanchez comeback and strong years from the rest of the starting pitchers. Understanding this Atkins has done an amazing job raising the floor of the position players so that if our starting pitching is successful than we will have a shot at a wild card spot. Really from this roster these are all good moves.

Well.... If she understood baseball she wouldn't need a man to #mansplain it to her.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 I'd be very surprised if won more than 80 games.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 I'd be very surprised if won more than 80 games. I agree. The most exciting thing about next season is potentially seeing the debut of Vlad Jr. I have zero expectations. They are going to go really young after the Donaldson mid season trade.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 with health in the rotation, I think we def make a go at it. If we lose significant time in the rotation, we're cooked. Our depth is pretty non-existent there (yeah Borucki!!)

Was she at least hot? Or did she have a dog in her twitter pic to confirm shes not hot?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 We can cut zeke and pay him 1/6th of his contract. Probably the best sentence I have read in 2018 so far and it's going to be hard to top that.

I think that's pretty pessimistic. People are definitely underrating how much we've improved this offseason. Hell, Goins to Diaz is a 2 win swing worst case as long as Diaz isn't injured all year.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Yeah, this looks like a 80-85 win team to me, with a lot more depth to overcome injuries than last season. FG has their projected win total at 83, maybe a little higher after the Grandy signing. I think that's reasonable.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Goins is a -1.5 WAR player? to be fair Dinger, Diaz is projected as a .5 WAR player over less than 200 PA's and Goins got 460PA's last year. I do agree 2 is a stretch to bank on, but I could see a 1.5 WAR swing as a reasonable assumption if he gets enough playing time (Goins at -.5 WAR, Diaz at +1 WAR)
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Goins is a -1.5 WAR player? No. According to the fangraphs Goins is a 0 WAR player. According to the fangraphs Diaz is a 0.5 WAR player in 43 games. If he has to play 120 games, Diaz is projected to be 1.5 WAR better than Goins. It would be awesome if Tulo is healthy though.

I think a 3+ WAR increase in middle infield production is probably reasonable. In fact it looks like Tulo, Travis, Diaz and Solarte are projected for 5 WAR over 320 games. It was probably 0 WAR last year.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Good signing. $5mm is a cup of coffee of Starbucks in MLB terms. Low risk LHH stick, but don't want to see too much of him.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Jays still need to find some impact/upside players. These moves make it a lot less likely to be a sub 80 win team but I'm not sure there's the upside to get in the high 80/low 90s in Wins.

Scottish blue jay Verified Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Even from far away Scotland this sounds good. This guy can hit, he has done wherever he played, he has vast experience, It leaves money still available; win, win. And maybe there is an acronym in that name somewhere!
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 A platoon with him and Pearce in Left is what i am dreaming about. That would be ok with Cain in RF
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 That would be ok with Cain in RF Or trade Pillar play Cain in CF and have Teoscar Hernandez play RF.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 IMO Cain isn't happening anymore. We've got about $15 million left or so and here is how we are set up. LF- Granderson/Pearce RF- Hernandez #5 SP- Biagini Cain alone would probably take up the remaining funds we have left. I expect that they'd rather use most of those funds on a SP and kick Biagini to the swingman role.
