Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 He is still an asset in my books despite his crappy start, just seems like poor asset management just to bench him to see if one lottery ticket (Gurribabip) will work. The team is almost certainly going to trade Solarte. If he's the one on the bench, that's not good 3 days before the deadline. Giving Devon a day or two off isn't going to hurt anything.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 Hes been a good player for a while, and is getting benched for no reason for two guys who has no pedigree of being moderately as good as he has? Who's benched? Diaz is hurt, meat. Take instance, you might be right once in a while. Travis will play again.

What part of his negative defense, negative bat, negative baserunning and incredible injury history makes him an asset? I agree he had a track record from 2015 and 2016, but that's 2 full seasons ago with significant injuries in the meantime. And Gurriel is hardly a babip monster. .350 is high, but for a guy with his exit velocity, somewhere in the .320 range wouldn't be unrealistic
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 Poor Devon Travis, getting benched for Gurribabip and Drury, lolololol The Jays are being super disrespectful and might as while trade him. Maybe we could get something half decent for him? Travis is probably the worst of those 3 players so I don’t know what you’re trying to get at.

He had a bad start, and has been good since May 22nd. I agree his defense isn't that good, but Gurribabip is terrible too. I agree that Travis has a injury history, but its comical just to throw him under the bus for Gurribabip. Gurribabip has a 439 babip before today's game in July, with a track record of being god awful hitter since he came to North America. I think Devon Travis is a good comp/ceiling for Gurribabip since they both don't walk and like to swing the bat more then take pitches.

Well giving a day off a week is fine, but it looks now going forward Travis will play 3/4 times a week, which seems like waste of an asset in my books.

Overall, Gurriel's babip is .350 before today's game. When a hitter is cold, chances are his babip is low. When a hitter is hot, chances are his babip is high. Neither represents his true talent, which why the A in babip stands for AVERAGE. And all babip is not created equal. Hard contact has a higher percentage of falling for a hit. I'd explain the details to you but I'm sure a prodigious poker player such as yourself should be able to work out the math. And before your brain hurts, no, I'm not saying that Gurriel isn't befitting a little from babip luck, because he likely is a little overall, but to nowhere near the degree your idiotic "Gurribabip" nickname suggests. Btw, Travbabips hot July he has a babip of .370.
tercet Verified Member Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 Why is Gurriel in this conversation? He’s swinging a hot bat and not blocking Travis from anything. Yes Gurribabip is swinging a hot bat in July that isn't sustainable given the underlying stats and his history. Travis is going to go from playing 6 days a week to 3/4 days a week bc of Gurribabip and the Drury trade, which I don't like.

Btw, Travbabips hot July he has a babip of .370. Travis has been an above average hitter for 850 PA's in the majors over 3 years, we pretty much known what he is at this point. I'm not a fan of giving up on him which the Jays esentially are at this point. Gurribabip has gone absolutely apeshit insane in July over 75~ PA with a 438 BABIP boosting his overall stats for the year. During his July he has a 1.6BB% and 14.3%K which again show how insanely historically lucky he has been in July. Gurribabip is gonna swing at everything and never going to walk like his brother I understand. His projected production is probably somewhere near Travis/Pillar, which are two hitters that swing alot and don't walk. Like all you nutjobs that went crazy over Teoscar in Sept17 and April 18, chill da f*** out over SSS when all the underlying stats say this won't keep up.

Wait, so you're calling Travis an above average hitter, comparing Gurriel to him, and saying that Gurriel can't succeed because he has the same profile?
tercet Verified Member Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 What was your bet? Don't have any now, but if anyone wants to bet on Gurribabip being good, i'm probably against it.

I'm saying relax IRT to Gurribabip and that I am extremely puzzled why the Jays are throwing in the white flag IRT to Travis. Seems like poor asset management. Gurribabip could be Travis, better then him or worse then him, no one knows he has a very weird history given his history in Cuba/milb.

You shouldn't be puzzled if you looked at more than slash lines. The only correct criticism of Gurriel you've made is that he needs to walk more, which is true. A 2% walk rate is very unlikely to be favourable long term.

Yes its true I am looking at his July slashes mostly. I agree he is a freak of nature that likes to swing alot and adjust his swing to hit pitches on all the corners/edges of the plate. Not many players have that ability which works to his advantage.

If you're at all curious, you should check out his exit velo, barrel percentage and hard hit percentage. He's actually been slightly unlucky in his results so far.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 (edited) It makes all the sense there is to have Gurriel playing every day. He has better tools than Travis across the board, and better tools than Diaz except for defense. And younger than both. Travis is still playing, he's just sharing time with Diaz. They really need to clear out Solarte and Granderson Edited July 29, 2018 by Laika

They really need to clear out Solarte and Granderson Travis now sitting 3 of last 5 games. Gurribabip is a lottery ticket, my quick guess is that he has a ceiling of Devon Travis 15/16. It is f***in terrible asset management throwing Travis under the bus like the jays are.

However, Travis is at a distinct disadvantage in the competition for playing time given he only plays 2B, no? Like, all of Drury, Diaz, Gurriel and Solarte play multiple positions.

They really need to clear out Solarte and Granderson Yeah moving one or both of them should open up enough AB's for everyone. It was funny listening to the broadcast last night, Buck was suggesting that a contending team may want Morales for the bench, and Pat seemed like he just couldn't bring himself to say that no one would want him.

Well so does Travis, evidently. He's not under a bus. He's going to play basically every day as soon as they move a body or two.
King Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 Pompey and Urshela removed from Bisons game after 1 PA each Granderson + Solarte out Pompey and Usrhela up? Granderson isn't starting today (against a Lefty). Solarte benched too

Hes not on the 40-man and last thing we need is another infielder even with Solarte gone.
