Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 They really have no other legitimate direction at this point. They need to deal Donaldson and Happ this year. Kind of sucks that they don't seem to have anybody else with half decent trade value (like Joe Smith last year). I guess I could see a team giving up a prospect for Granderson. Could sell Tepera I guess but he's not a rental like Smith last season, first arbitration year.
baubau Verified Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 I don't think it's likely they trade Pillar this year. He's under control for two more seasons, and he should be a solid CF for both of them. Nobody in the org is really pushing him out right now, since Pompey and Alford have been useless. I'd rather hold him than get a moderate prospect. Solarte is also under control for 2019 and would be useful to keep around. He's not really having a great year so I'm not sure how much value he'd even have. He could be traded though, sure. I'd take a moderate prospect. I can't see Solarte being traded. Next season you'll have: - Tulo - Diaz - Travis In the minors currently, - Gurriel Jr - Urena Donaldson is gone. That is a whole lot of glass in the major league system and depending on how you swing with Gurriel Jr., not so great proven talent in the minors. Sure there is Bo and others but I think Solarte's ability to provide depth is too much to gamble for a 'moderate prospect'. I still see this team/management try and compete next year.

And look at a team like Atlanta - when you get guys like Acuna and Albies filtering up (or Vlad and Bo...) fortunes can turn around pretty f***ing fast in 21st Century Major League Baseball. There's nothing more lame than promoting elite prospects onto some scorched earth, tanking team with no short term chance to compete. BUT you can obviously replace Solarte so you still trade him if the prospect has some shimmer. And then you get a new kind of fat kind of UTIL kind of a good hitter guy.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Next year's team IMO to start the season will be: CA Martin, 1B Smoak, 2B Travis, SS Tulo, 3B Solarte, RF Grichuk, CF Pillar, LF Hernandez, DH Morales. With Diaz, Pompey (if he's alive...since he's out of options), and Maile on the bench. Jays are going to hold off on calling anyone up for service time reasons. By mid season (post super 2 cut off and post trade deadline) we will see the prospects come up. Smoak and Pillar will be traded at next year's deadline, Martin will either be traded with all of his money eaten up (vetrin presents for team in a playoff run) or let go, as will Tulo if he's healthy. In other words, this team is going to be bad and boring until mid 2019 at the earliest. Then 2020 will hit, and we will be fapping.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Big elephant in the room: Should Travis even be guaranteed a spot on the 25 man roster? He's hitting everything on the ground and not with much authority plus his defense is below average.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Author Posted June 14, 2018 This season has been nearly Worst Case Ontario for the Jays. June 13th and the team WAR leaders are Happ, Pillar, Maile, and Teoscar. lmao. A day later and Juan Soto has the same WAR as our joint batting leaders Maile and Pillar. Happ is out in the lead with 1.9 though.

I agree, but he does explain it in the comments below. Simply saying that SRF and Reese are working to rebuild their prospect status so they can be part of the future.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 Pillar? Solarte? Moderate prospect for either? When Yankees call about a Happ deal, who would you ask for?
Ray Verified Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 When Yankees call about a Happ deal, who would you ask for? Clint Frazier. And I wouldn’t mind giving up more to get him either.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 When Yankees call about a Happ deal, who would you ask for? They have so many solid or better SP prospects in the upper minors and that happens to be a weakness of ours. A combination of a couple of those near MLB ready arms along with some sort of other lottery ticket seems about right - and then I'd hope we would sign Happ again in the off season. Albert Abreu, Chance Adams and Juan Then...maybe I'm reaching.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 When Yankees call about a Happ deal, who would you ask for? I doubt the Yankees and Jays match up on any trades. They'd have to overpay for the whole in division thing and that would push them out of anything serious. Its more likely Atlanta comes calling for Josh Donaldson(assuming health) unless they feel Riley is the answer (which is pretty possible), at which point you ask for the sun, moon and stars and settle for whatever heavenly body they agree to. Riley, Pache and an arm like Fried isn't a ludicrous ask IMO, though I'd likely ask for Anderson over Fried... and end up settling on Fried.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 (edited) You don’t think the Yankees would like to secure their playoff chances vs the Red Sox by giving up a prospect? They’re definitely going to be buyers at the deadline. If we trade Happ the season is basically conceded and it’s only a 4 month rental, the AL east divison barrier doesn’t seem that strong to overcome. We could really use a pitching or OF prospect and they have a ton. Mariners could also use Happ, but they don’t have much to offer. The Braves could be a nice partner, but I think the question marks about Donaldson would bring the price point too low for us to pull the trigger. Even just Pache and Fried would be a nice haul. Donaldson would have to go on an MVP raking streak to ask for Ian Anderson and the Nationals would have to stay very close in the standings like currently, but would be a really nice haul. Clint Frazier. And I wouldn’t mind giving up more to get him either. Frazier for Happ+ can be interesting Edited June 14, 2018 by BlueRocky
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 I don't understand why a team would pay more for trading for a player in the division when its a rental. If anything the Yankees wouldn't want to trade in the division because the Jays will have control of those players for another 6+ years.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2018 Posted June 14, 2018 If the Jays fire Gibbons/they part ways I'd love to give Mark Derosa an opportunity to be the next manager.

I think Gibby is gone after the season and not because he hasn't been gone. I think his laid back approach is great for vets but may not be ideal for youth movement.

If Gibby gets fired, and he shouldn't, it'd be because he's a scapegoat. Simple as that.

Pretty standard occurrence when you get new people running the front office.

Its possible Gibby doesn't even want to be around for a rebuild/retool.
