burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Okay, so ... let's dissect that a bit. Donaldson will still have more trade value unless he's season ending injured at the time. But I think what you're really saying is it will be easier to move Happ for a valuable return than it will be to move Donaldson. Close? Donaldson seems to be playing hurt or is in huge decline (exit velo is way down, plus the arm issue). If he's now more of a 130 wRC+ bat with average defense and Happ keeps performing the way he has then I think Happ is going to get a better return since everyone always needs pitching. More or less Donaldson is still the more valuable player but could have less trade value given their positions.

Plus we know their GM likes to pull trades Josh Donaldson stealing Jose Bautista's job at 3b in Atlanta is a story I never thought I'd see, but one I must have.

Donaldson had an .837 OPS in June last year and a .707 OPS in July and then he absolutely went off in August and September. Josh played games not fully healthy at the beginning of the year and hasn't been barreling the ball up yet, but I think it's a mistake to think he's in a pretty major decline. He's going to get hot.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Also we know their GM is ok with trading away high potential arms Just sayin You can say that about most GMs in the game. They all trade a young pitcher or position player at some point that turns into something pretty good. Shapiro traded Chris Archer for Mark Derosa once upon a time as well.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 If the Braves keep it up, Donaldson to Atlanta makes too much sense. Wonder if we could pry Kyle Wright and Mike Soroka from them

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Funny as I was thinking Atlanta for some time now as a Trade Partner for us and that it would be best to let this season Die and get on with the Future !!! As I would rather watch the up and downs of the youth as they grow ! Then these old dudes trying and continue to Epically fail as they are ! Might be The Rum talking but I think I would expand on it to include more then Donaldson ! Have Martin and Pillar join him also ! Even pay half of Donaldson’s and Martins salary remaining And get a haul in return !!! Plus the savings provide enough surplus to Dfa Morales Which is a win win even before the potential return of young arms we could and might get
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 i mentioned atlanta a few weeks ago. JD for riley and soroka. Might have to add Happ. End the Vlad 3B experiment. Destined to fail. Vlad 1B, Riley 3B, Bichette 2B, Jansen C, Alford CF, Hernandez RF in April 2019

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Braves say no that would be the smart answer but its AA so who knows

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 You aren't getting either let alone both for JD. Maybe last year but not now. I fully expected this Donaldson situation to play out in the worst possible way for the Jays.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 I think everyone is overestimating how much Donladson is going to get in return. Look at what rental bats got last year like JD Martinez.. You aren't getting a Sorotka or Austin Riley.

Machado has a chance of a return like that.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 Time to trade Donaldson/Happ see what we can get. Team is going nowhere. Jays should have traded him when his value was higher...not going to get a big return now.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 AA was on Shulman's Podcast not too long ago and said that they tried to acquire Happ at the deadline in 2015 but had no $ left in the budget. Also that the dealbreaker to getting Zobrist was they weren't willing to give up Tellez (Looks bad in hindsight)
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 A couple of years after I wanted to but sure...better late than never.
