Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 I don't think they'll cut Morales unless they absolutely have to. Like if he's at a 80 OPS+ by June or something and shows no signs of getting better. This front office wants to maximize every dollar that they've spent on someone. Also people on here tend to overstate how bad he actually was. The guy was worth -0.2 WAR. He's not Albert Pujols level of bad. Honestly if he was making $5M instead of $11M, I doubt people on here would even care. We have enough depth now that he doesn't even have to be one of our better hitters like we relied on him to be last year. I say he bounces back. .265/.320/.460 with 30 homers. Still won't be worth much WAR since his baserunning sucks and zero defensive value, but I think he can give us a solid ~1 WAR season. And then maybe try to offload him to a rebuilding team eating some cash since there might be a roster crunch next year. That slash line would not result in a 1 WAR year for Morales.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 At the very least the Jays needs to manipulate Alford's service time. Keep him down for the requisite two-ish weeks plus however much MLB service time he accrued last season, get the extra year of control. There's really no rush anyway at this point, the odds of him being the difference between the team being competitive or not are nil. Frankly I'd keep him in AAA most of the year unless he is absolutely demolishing it and we desperately need an OF. I think that's where the Granderson contract is such a good one for this club. We get a decent lefty who can hit some dingers, play at least average defense, and provide much needed mentorship and leadership in the clubhouse. And, as a bonus, it actually makes sense to keep Alford cooking a little in AAA to extend that service time window. We get that all for $5M. Great deal.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 No, but you need to only look at the offensive metrics for a DH IMO. That's where you see the real value in a good DH.

But, would you stick with Morales even at the chance of costing you a potential WC spot? Twins have improved, and you know that you need to balance budget with assembling the best team possible. So, cutting Morales and adding let's say a 5M Walker, you really are only spending an extra 5M but you have the chance to get 1.5-2 fwar vs 0. That 2 games could be the difference in getting you into that WC spot and it's not like it will cost 15-20m. Anyways, if you want to win, you cut Morales, or he should have been as some GMs are taking advantage of the market.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 This is why Teoscar Hernandez will likely be the one that makes the roster in case of injuries. Right now its probably Granderson-Pillar-Grichuk-Pearce. If Pearce is hurt, then I think Hernandez opens the season with the Jays. This is great asset management. I also think they would like Alford to play everyday, while they would be okay with a limited playing time for Hernandez. I couldn't agree more. I love Alford, but it makes so much sense to keep him down a bit longer. Or trade Pillar.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 That slash line would not result in a 1 WAR year for Morales. Yeah, that'd end up being a near wRC+ around 105, same as his projection, we need more than that from Kendrys.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2018 Author Posted March 12, 2018 Stroman has been ruled out for opening day.

Well, Walker's bat and Morales bat are probably similar from the DH spot overall, so you wouldn't gain 2 war just by putting him in as the DH. The extra value from Walker would come from being able to spell at 2B without losing a beat, and rotating Travis into the DH spot to help keep him healthy and his bat in the lineup.

To sign here, a wildcard contender with a glut of middle infielders, we'd have to pay more. In isolation it's still a bargain for a 2 WAR player but you can't just ignore the $23m commitment you're cutting either.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2018 Posted March 12, 2018 Does Stroman just bitch about anything that doesn't involve stroking his ego. God hes so unlikable. Yankees had an incredible off-season without giving up much. Pretty frustrating.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Why are you frustrated over Stroman complaints? So many whiners calling out Stroman whining I am actually normally very quiet when it comes to Stroman's antics. I just think its ridiculous how he needs to comment negatively on everything that doesn't go his way slightly. It's not frustrating. I just think hes a smug douche bag way to often.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Wait until common folk get hit harder... great example MLB. Unions fight for the future, it looks bleak, on the economy.

There isn't even a quote from Stroman to rip apart here. Obviously he isn't happy to not be out there on Opening Day, as you would expect from any competitor.

Obviously he isn't happy to not be out there on Opening Day, as you would expect from any competitor. It doesn't really bother me that he wants to start opening day. I understand that. It's the feud between Sanchez and stroman that the Sun eluded to in the article that's the issue. Is their relationship that fractured? That can't be good for the club.

But when he addresses the media I digress.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Anyone else ready to cut Morales for Alford? Makes the roster much better and more functional in my opinion. The money being spent on Morales is already gone. No getting it back. I hope the Jays go with the best team rather than trying to save face on the KM contract. No but Hernandez would make a lot of sense. Pearce could DH and Hernandez could be the fourth OF and get some ABs at DH. They won't do it though.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 STFU!lulz Stroman is a very good pitcher, but a horribly unlikable human. Everyone knows this. Get with the program.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 I'm concerned, in that Opening Day is still far off, and Stroman has already been ruled out.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 13, 2018 Posted March 13, 2018 Stroman not being available Opening Day seems like more of a timing thing than a delay in getting healthy. Just stupid to try to line him up for a specific day when the focus should be on recovery timeline

Before you get too jealous just remember we will be back to pissing rain anytime now, just thought i'd share. It's hard to feel down when the weather is so great and baseball is almost back.
