We lost a lifelong Blue Jays fan today. My father-in-law lost his battle with cancer this morning at age 72. He's been my "father" for over half my life now (been with my wife for 19 years). While there was a stark difference in our views of baseball - we will forever be connected by our love for the Jays.

So sorry to hear

I almost feel like he went to arbitration because he WANTED to feel like everyone was against him.

Is it just me, or is this giant chip on his shoulder proof that he’s not thick skinned...? Dude takes absolutely everything personally.

His "thick skin" seems to share a lot of characteristics with Trump's.

I would love to see Gibby take him down a notch. This ship isn’t sinking and you’re not pitching for yourself. Height Doesn’t Measure Hatred.

Sorry to hear that. Sending positive thoughts to your family.

In fact I'd trade him sooner if the return was super legit

I liked that idea of trading him to the Brewers for Hiura, Phillips, Burnes and Ray (or something like that...maybe Santana in there)

To be fair, arbitration hearings will always have teams presenting negative things about players, and no player is going to be happy with that.

FWIW Stroman followed up with:

What "negative" things do we think a team would say about a player during an arbitration case?

Don't they just sight the facts and comparable players/contracts?

Are players even present for hearings? I always assumed it was a bunch of lawyers/agents representing both sides in a very clinical debate over a players overall value.

I've heard lots of players interviewed about it. Sounds like the team's lawyers/FO staff nitpick and highlight all the negatives. It sounds pretty damn unpleasant.

Player is there and probably whoever he wants to bring

Arb panel

Whoever the team wants to send

FWIW the Braves apparently sent no one from their front office last week, was all handled by hired hands

Dellin Betances fell out massively re arbitration with the Yankees last year. A team has to argue why a player is not worth the salary they are asking for, obviously that's going to piss off a lot of people. Imagine asking for a raise at your work and been given a list of reasons why you don't deserve one!

EDIT: sorry for your loss.

OK, apparently not quite true...

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Losing his arbitration case against the Braves last week wasn’t what bothered pitcher Mike Foltynewicz, it was looking over during the hearing and seeing no one he recognized from the team in attendance. The team actually had two of its front-office representatives in addition to an outsider attorney at the hearing, but Foltynewicz apparently didn’t recognize any of them and was under the impression Tuesday that the team basically blew off the hearing.

“It would have been nice if someone from the Braves were actually there,” Foltynewicz said as pitchers and catchers reported to spring training Tuesday. “I took a couple of days out of my schedule to go out to Arizona and go sit there. The world knows it wasn’t a big amount of money we were fighting over, but it would have been nice if they would have been there to sit with their lawyers and tell me why we don’t deserve this contract and this raise. It would have been nice.

“I took time out of my day, and almost missed my son being born. It’s just a respect thing. But at the end of the day, we’re here (at spring training), no worries, business is business. Just focus on getting out there, getting better and getting wins for the Braves.”

The Braves were represented at the hearing by chief legal officer Greg Heller and Danielle Monday, a baseball-operations assistant.

He almost missed his son being born over $100K? unreal. That is a bizarre situation.

Also when he wasn't even required to be there.

I don't know how you get a difference of $100k and not end up settling. At that price you are basically arguing over who is going to pay for the attorneys and arbiters to hold the hearing in the first place. There's nothing to be gained for either side.
