Rockies sign Murphy after passing him up for free down the stretch last year, preferring instead to ride with Ian Desmond who promptly went 2 for 17 in the post-season.

Plus what are they going to do with Desmond now. Move him back to the outfield??

Bench or buy him out? He's been worth -1.5 WAR since they signed him.

Santa: Nick Pivetta: Does he take the next step this year? Or will he be a bag of coal under the tree?

Eric A Longenhagen: On a truly contending team I think that guy is in the bullpen.

okay

WTF? That's bizarre.

I don't see it as bizarre, they're just not budging on their grade as a 40 FV. Evaluators are stubborn like that, look at Keith Law, he's a prime example. I'm with King I like the work they do, but they should fess up on this one. Maybe they think last year was an outlier. Who knows, unless they elaborated on it recently? Pretty stupid statement and hill to die on.

Let's not just ignore Pivetta's career 5.77 ERA. That's 0.3 career RA9-WAR.

Of course, his ERA is nowhere near stable and the gap between his fWAR and the above is huge. But we can read between the line (singular) and at least infer the Longenhagen is saying he believes Pivetta is a HR or some kind of guy who gets hammered on the ball and will always be worse than his DIPS. Not that I think there is necessarily any merit to that at this point.

Meh, those mediocre numbers are mostly because of his god awful rookie campaign, I guess we'll see going forward, his projections look good.

Angles getting ripped on MLB radio for spending $20 Million for Cahill and Harvey... Former GMs saying they did stupid stuff like that, never works. Should have spent on quality vs quantity.. Spend $20 million on Dallas or Corbin, even Charlie Morton would have been better... Angles are pushing Trout away with these moves...

To be fair, I think the Jays would have benefited from Harvey, or maybe even Cahill, but not both.. because they are right.. $20 million for meh..

Let's not ignore he was the 29th most valuable pitcher in baseball last year (from the fangraphs qualified list - I'm sure there's a few more non-qualified guys ahead of him).

Eric is clearly racist against Canadians :) We can't stand for this type of discrimination.

Full trade, sources tell Yahoo Sports:

Oakland gets: Jurickson Profar

Texas gets: Brock Burke, Eli White, Kyle Bird, Yoel Espinal, international $

Tampa Bay gets: 38th pick in 2019 draft, Emilio Pagan, Rollie Lacy

don't understand this for Tampa

They must have someone they like in the draft around that area. That said, Pagan looks like a guy who could definitely break out in an opener role.

Really like that for Texas and the A's. The Rangers give up the best player but get an intriguing prospect in Burke and some lottery tickets, and the A's get a very good player who can play all over the diamond and has two more years of cheap arbitration.

For the simple fact that the Rays did this, I will assume Rollie Lacy is > Brock Burke.

Lol I could see that, but I would've also thought someone like Kyle Bird would be a guy for them. Seems like they were grooming him for an opener role with 6 "starts" this year, he racked up the strikeouts.

Okay, I do agree now that MLB should ban "The Opener", if only because every time some unheralded pitcher or fringe arm gets traded or acquired a million voices in message board unison across the internet right now probably go, "hmmmm. he'd probably make a good Opener!" and I can see why that will get annoying.

Why?

Good control, good strikeout ability, throws hard, was often utilized as multi-inning guy the last two years. The stuff seems to be there, but he's likely gonna have to limit the fly balls a bit to break out.

Well, that's a bit pricier than I thought it would be

It's so unbelievably irritating. How would you ban it, though?

I had no idea Anibal Sanchez was a thing again. Now he's getting 20 mil.

Got paid for last years numbers... He can sustain that right?
