I'd say Manny may be the safer choice. Less injury history and a better chance of putting up positive defensive marks.

Bryce obviously has the higher ceiling tho

Josh Donaldson and Jose Bautista were both cocky *******s. I actually don't give a s*** if Manny Machado hustles EVER if he can still provide 6 WAR per season. Manny had multiple knee problems. Maybe not hustling keeps him healthier, for all we know. I would rather have 6 WAR Manny 95% of a season than 7 WAR Manny for 40% of a season.

Perhaps in the world series he could take the "risk" and leg out a double? Think for a moment about how f***ing stupid you'd have to be to not realise the risk is worth it in the world series. And own up to your mistakes man - grow a set.

There's also a difference between being a cocky ******* and trying to injure opponents.

It's all irrelevant as he isn't signing here. I hope he takes the money and goes to a s***** team and loses forever.

Stay away from the big free agents this off-season. If you are going to commit to a 5+ year deal with a player the most important seasons are the first couple. And since we aren't expected to contend in 2019 (or probably 2020 either) it makes sense to wait 1 or 2 off-seasons before spending big bucks.

Id much rather see them pursue a free agent pitcher next off-season. Archer, Cole or Sale maybe.

I would love to get Sale he's so good

Mets are listening to offers for Thor. If traded, does he fetch a similarly weak return like Paxton (given the similarities they have in terms of results and inability to stay healthy)? or does it just expose how stupid the Mariners are?

Too bad we didn't have Dickey to Trade them

Cron DFA'd last night coming off a 122 wRC+ and 2.1 fWAR season. I guess this tells us that Smoak doesn't really have any trade value.

I don't really understand why the 1B market has collapsed the way it has. Teams like the Rockies and Angels are trying to win and seem content running sub-replacement level garbage out there at 1B.

LOL Smoak's $8M option might have been an overpay.

In a way this is good though. 1B market has completely collapsed and the Jays have a perfectly adequate one who seems to like it here. Offer him a 1 year $5M contract every year until he's toast. Spend the money elsewhere.

But he's such a ****.

A man who we have known since age 19 as the star player of a s***** team that is one of our top rivals comes off as a **** to us. What a surprise. Maybe with age comes wisdom.

Man you seem super hyper sensitive about the existence of Manny Machado. Maybe you'd like to see him get stabbed too? Christ, why don't you relax?

Yeah seriously, Smoak’s deal is an overpayment given the market for first basemen. Even a trade will yield nothing.

In two years Betts is a free agent. f*** over Boston and get him.

Well he is a ****, Brownie isn't saying anything that isn't true. Same way some of you guy's went on about Stroman's Douchebaggery. Who cares? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You won't have any trouble finding volunteers to stab him.

I think Smoak and Cron are in different groups as Smoak can actually play the field. I don't think 1B and DH are synonymous. There are still teams that picture a throw in the dirt in the 9th inning and pass on a guy like Cron for that reason, I think.

Also Smoak can hit RHP.

There are a lot of differences with the two when you try to put an actual roster together. I don't know how Cron has a higher WAR than Smoak. They have the same wRC+ while Cron got shielded vs. some RHP. Cron can't play defence. Wow, he runs the bases slightly better. Neither are going 1st to 3rd ffs. Sometimes the WAR stat puts me on tilt.

I think you’re underrating Cron. He’s graded out as an average defender in his career, and his career wRC+ is 111 vs. RHP and 111 vs. LHP.

Smoak throws with his left!

Smoak is legitimately horrible on the bases, Cron is below average, their difference on the bases is like 5 runs in Cron's favour, which explains the WAR difference with them being pretty much equal everywhere else.

I don't believe defensive metrics. Would anyone say Grichuk is a minus defender?

I don't think they're great either but over a large body of work Smoak has rated as an average defender by UZR and poor by DRS while Cron has rated about average for both, I think you're really overstating how unplayable the latter is on the field. Maybe Smoak's ability to pick the ball aren't properly weighed or whatever, and I think he's fine, but he's not Matt Olson out there as his lack of mobility likely costs him some plays that others at the position might make.

Is that wrong?

You're probably right Boxy - I should just relax. But I'm allowed to hate players too.

Reading through forst 1/3 of season posts

Mike Trout has 3 WAR in a 1/4 of a season and idiots are flapping their gums about Ohtani and Mookie Betts.

Mookie just hit his third jack of the game.

If Trout ever has an off year he's got a shot at an MVP

Holy crap Mike Trout is already at 5.2 fWAR. I wonder what player will win the MVP with an objectively inferior season this year. Jose Ramirez? I’m happy Betts got hurt.

Still Mookie Betts. Trout will out-WAR him by like 2 and out-wOBA him by 75 points, but Mookie will when when the Red Sox take the division title, his batting average is 3 points higher, and he finishes with 6 more RBI.

Yeah, but like... have you about Mookie Betts?

Betts can challenge Trout as the most valuable player in the game.

Mike Trout is having an insane year.

Yeah, on pace for his best year to date.

Yeah but Mookie Betts
Posted
Yeah, and you go to about halfway through the year and Betts' started getting his due.

He just kept doing it all year start to finish. Amazing season.

AA's working hard to get the Angel's to trade him to Atlanta.

That's the one thing I will give to AA. He takes a lot of chances, where if it works then it's great (JD) but if it doesn't then it's really bad (Tulo, Reyes/Johnson, Dickey, etc). Unfortunately other than Donaldson a lot of his risks were trash here, but hard to screw up what he inherited there, and adding Trout would obviously be a great move.

I thought the consensus was that the Florida deal still worked out for us generally...just not as great as hoped.

Maybe. When is Trout a FA again? 2020.

AA and Braves have a chance to be a powerhouse for a long time. I get that they have a surplus of pitching prospects, but they would be better off converting thise into longer term assets?
