Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 Bring back Joe Smith plz
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 I wonder if we're the other team in on Bryan Shaw? He'd actually be kind of interesting. One of those guys who's velocity is actually increasing, and might be more consistent than any other reliever available. Shapiro is also really familiar with him. Don't overpaid for RP. We need Joe Smith 2.0
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 I'm gonna jump on the Bryan Shaw bandwagon with Abom. He'd be a reliever I wouldn't mind giving a multi-year deal to.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 I'm gonna jump on the Bryan Shaw bandwagon with Abom I'd be happy to have him at a reasonable price. I am quite weary of spending heavily on relievers though, there are always good bargains to be found.

His DRA has been good over the past few years and is trending down.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 Tommy Hunter for me, please. I'd love to see use get Hunter and Smith. Shaw's had a pile of innings/appearances. I don't hate the idea of him, but Hunter and his new cutter is comparable and probably comes at half the cost.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/lets-figure-out-a-cardinals-trade-for-josh-donaldson/ Dave Cameron suggests that a Donaldson for Gyorko (under control through '19) and Carpenter ('20) deal makes sense for both teams.

There is definitely some logic in his theory.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 Man, that trade would be the ultimate Gord Ash move. Might keep the team around the same projected win total in 2018, give or take, but doesn't add any young talent.

I can see the logic that you're basically trading Donaldson for a Tulo/Travis replacement.

Yuck... Cameron's dumn.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 Gyorko, Reyes, and another prospect, and that's something I can get behind. I like Gyorko as a replacement for JD, controllable and is a decent enough player (2+ WAR), but beyond him there better be some young players with some upside.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 There is definitely some logic in his theory. I think you need to look a little harder at it man. It's awful. I mean maybe if the Cards took Tulo's Contract in the deal too.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 29, 2017 Author Posted November 29, 2017 Non-tender deadline is Friday. With any luck this is Ryan Goins' last three days as a Blue Jay.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Non-tender deadline is Friday. With any luck this is Ryan Goins' last three days as a Blue Jay. I'm hopeful. After trading for Gift and promoting Urena last year we now have two Goins-like players on the roster who actually have options (as any Goins-like player should). It makes less sense to roster Goins than it ever has before. Do the right thing Shatkins!

He has no options left and we got guys that have options left that can do the same job.... In my mind there is no need to keep him....
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 What is Goins projected to make in arb? That should be the real deciding factor. On the surface, there's nothing egregious about a defense first backup on the 25 man roster if he's not making too much. We shouldn't let Gruber's pro Goins passion push us into correlating irrational hatred. The sky won't fall because of Ryan Goins.

The problem mostly lies in the fact that it's likely a significant amount of playing time will be given to a below replacement level player if he's still rostered.

Goins isn't the end of the world if he's paired with someone better than Barney.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Given the fragility of our starting IF's even if Goins is platooned with a better player. He still likely stands to receive considerable playing time. It shouldn't be that difficult to find a role player at least better than him. The bar isn't very high. Plus he's a conceited f*** if he thinks he deserves to be a starting player on a lot of other teams.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 It's really too bad we have Morales on the team. Ohtani aside, Gattis is apparently a non-tender candidate, and reasonably priced. He'd be a nice guy to have as the backup catcher / full time DH.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Why? I say this with deep loathing, but I'd rather have Carrera than Markakis. Sidenote, I didn't realize that Markakis has had such a relatively s***** career. He was only outstanding in two years of his whole career.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Hopefully we were asking for a decent prospect in exchange for taking on his salary or something...
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 I wouldn't mind this move, I honestly thought he would of been a good fit last year. He's not a great hitter but he's pretty damn consistent and stays healthy. I'd take him over Zeke. Seems like this would be a good salary relief move for the Braves.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Hopefully we were asking for a decent prospect in exchange for taking on his salary or something... Didn't consider that but good point.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Goins will be on the 25 man roster on opening day 2018, 2019, and 2020. I'm sure of that. He might even get extended beyond that. Two different regimes, including a sabermetric one, values him despite everything aside from two months in 2015 telling us that he is absolute s***. I don't understand it, but he'll be a Jay for life. We just have to come to grips with it.
