Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 IMO it'd be a waste of money when other similar (i.e. not very good) relievers like Liriano and Feldman are likely available for cheaper than $6m. Christ - Boone Logan and Jerry Blevins just got $6.5M on a 1 year deal last year with a club option. Surely to god for $6M (or slightly more) we could be looking at a quality bullpen arm that would fill a need (like LOOGY) instead of Tom f***ing Koehler.....right?

Yeah I think 6.5 mil on a one year deal nets someone better than Koehler.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 The Score app just sent me a notification that the Jays are in on JD Martinez.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 The Score app just sent me a notification that the Jays are in on JD Martinez. Good they should be. Especially when that price tag falls.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 The Score app just sent me a notification that the Jays are in on JD Martinez. I'm all for that, but not anywhere close to 7/210.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 20, 2017 Author Posted November 20, 2017 I think whoever signs Martinez is going to regret it sooner than later.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Good they should be. Especially when that price tag falls. The price he gets is not worth in IMO...... Already a below average outfielder it would be a very risky investment.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 I hope the Jays just called to tell his agent their asking price is ridiculous.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 I think whoever signs Martinez is going to regret it sooner than later. If someone can get him at 5/125 or less, it'll (probably) be manageable.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Jays just traded for that African infielder from the Pirates.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Jays just traded for that African infielder from the Pirates. Can we package him in a deal for Stanton tho
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Can we package him in a deal for Stanton tho Just looked him up on fangraphs dot com and unless he's Ozzie Smith out in the field he is total garbage.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 20, 2017 Author Posted November 20, 2017 Jays just traded for that African infielder from the Pirates. Hopefully this means the end of Ryan Goins. He's the same player, only he has an option year and will play for the minimum.

Has any big contract handed out to a player 30 and over actually worked out good? I wouldn't even offer him that and just wait till free agency next year and pony up more money for a younger better player.

I'd take him over Refsnyder which is basically what they did today. I'd take him over Goins too.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 I'd probably prefer Cain over Martinez.

Yeah, he's basically Johnny Mac (or Goins): good infield defender, max effort guy who his teammates love, but cant hit at all. I don't think he's better than Goins, but I'm also not convinced he's worse, and the option year and ~$1.2M in savings make him more desirable than Goins IMO.

I'd rather see if we could sign Alcides for a few million if we want to go that route. Or Gurriel, or Urena. No sense clogging up the 40 man further by adding a third one of those guys, and one with no upside to boot.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Jays just traded for that African infielder from the Pirates. Let's hope the Pirates just gave us a Gift.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 IF Gift causes the Jays to get rid of Goins, then he really would be a gift. I doubt it though.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 The Score app just sent me a notification that the Jays are in on JD Martinez. They should be patient this winter with the hitting market. Teams will probably want to save money for next year's loaded free agent class, and the market for no-D power hitters has crashed the past two years. If they wait until his price drops, then they might get a decent deal out of it.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/a-note-about-harold-ramirez/ Does "outrighted" not mean they sent him to AAA and took him off the 40? Why does this article read like he was given his unconditional release?

Why does this article read like he was given his unconditional release? He’ll be placed on waivers. If nobody claims him, I’m sure they’ll keep him.
