G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 If these projected arb salaries are correct, we'll have roughly $30 million to play with in free agency assuming our budget is the same as last season. Our bullpen is mostly fine. Another LOOGY or getting back Joe Smith would be nice. 5th starter, IF depth, and an OF is what we need. Did you add them ALL up though? What are we at for $$$ so far with the guaranteed contracts plus the likely arb keepers: Josh Donaldson (5.158) – $20.7MM Aaron Loup (5.040) – $1.8MM Ezequiel Carrera (4.039) – $1.9MM Marcus Stroman (3.148) – $7.2MM Kevin Pillar (3.113) – $4.0MM Ryan Goins (3.106) – $1.8MM Aaron Sanchez (3.069) – $1.9MM Devon Travis (3.000) – $1.7MM Roberto Osuna (3.000) – $5.6MM Might as well count Carrera, Loup and Goins as likely kept, because even if they're not you're likely paying someone else 1M+ to fill those spots. I don't see the FO guaranteeing 2018 MLB roster spots right now for Urena or Alford, even though doing so would save about 1M each vs keeping Goins and Carrera.

They were more or less regulars when they had their first year arbitration but Amarista and Mercer both got over $2M for their arbitration. I figure Goins is somewhere around $1.8ish. If you don't plan on offering him a back up role or at any point of the season you plan to try and push him through waivers...just cut him now and do the right thing for him.

Rosterresource has us projected at $141 million to start next season assuming all of them are tendered contracts. I'm going with the assumption that Koehler probably isn't tendered one and that we have the same budget as last season. You take Koehler's $6 million off the books and you have $135 million with gives you rough $30 million to play with.

We can assume status quo, but we are also coming off two straight seasons of 3M+ attendance. Attendance will likely dip back down to ~2.7M or so next year, but if you want to justify an increased payroll in order to maintain attendance, there's an argument to be made. Other teams with lesser attendance support payrolls of $180M+, and that doesn't even factor in Rogers' complete monopoly below-market farce of a TV deal. IMO, this team's payroll should be right up against the luxury tax threshold, and if Rogers says they can't support that then they are goddamn liars.
Ray Verified Member Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Signing one of Dyson/Jon Jay and trading for either Lowrie or Profar would be an ideal offseason imo. That's a cheap combo that'll bolster our depth in both the infield and OF and will also allow us to have enough money to go for a really good starter if need be. OF: Pillar, Pearce, Dyson, Teoscar, Carrera, DSJ, Alford, Pompey(?) IF: Donaldson, Tulowitzki, Travis, Profar, Urena, Goins, Refsnyder C: Martin, Maile, Lopez, Jansen, McGuire SP: Stroman, Sanchez, Happ, Estrada, Borucki, Biagini, Rowley, the 5th starter we sign. 1B/DH: Smoak, Morales, Tellez maybe if he figures it out. It really is about having viable depth across the diamond. Obviously I want a guy like Donaldson playing everyday, but the era of iron man everyday players is mostly over. That's not what wins championships nowadays. You need to be able to rest your regulars and have major league ready backups behind them that can fill in. You look at the Cubs for example. Even in a down year they still managed to win their division. They lose Dexter Fowler who was a big contributor the year before and they manage with an Almora and Jon Jay platoon in CF. Rotation regresses, Zobrist plays like s***, Addison Russell goes down for 40 games and yet they're still good. That team is just built to last and overcome obstacles.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 The thought of potentially Ryan Goins getting paid over 1 million by my favourite team makes me very sad indeed.

Ray Verified Member Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I still really really like the idea of Carlos Santana. Switch hitter, career slashline of .249/.365/.445 with a 121 OPS+, averages ~3.1 WAR per season. Incredible at taking walks and working an AB. Unfortunate he's strictly a 1B at this point. He would be my #1 target if we didn't have Morales locked up for 2 more years. 4/50-4/60 probably gets it done for him too. Didn't realize Dee Gordon is only making $10 million next year. He wouldn't be a bad add either. Marlins are 100% heading towards a firesale. Their payroll is actually going up because the backend of Stantons contract is kicking in. Probably want to shed as much money as they can. Gordon could probably be had for cheap if we eat all the salary.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 $175 million- $180 million would be the sweet spot. Yes Probably no reason they can't go there and that would give them more like 40M to play with this off season

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 You guys, I legitimately keep forgetting that Troy Tulowitzki exists. Easy mistake to make its not like he is always around or does much when he is..... Besides his slick defense that will eventually slip further and further down the ladder as time keeps rolling along.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 too bad Tulo wasn't moved in the offseason the year he was acquired, like some on here were advocating
Blitz Verified Member Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Gonna voice an unpopular opinion here, but locking up Donaldson to a high $, long term deal is just repeating the Tulo mistake all over again... If there is ANY truth to the Cardinals rumours, my ask is for (top prospect) P Alex Reyes & their current 3B Jedd Gyorko - if they don't balk, pull the trigger! We might have to add some int'l slot money or something, but it beats JD walking... Then sign CF Lorenzo Cain to a 4-5yr deal, assuming he's got 3yrs as a starting OF left before taking his .300avg to the DH spot. At this point I could honestly be okay with keeping Barney, but Goins or both of them needs to go. I would actually prefer a guy like Brett Lawrie as a cheaper, super-utility with a little better pop off the bench and a + defender. Dump either Pearce or Morales for a song, need the roster spot more than the player. Essentially we just need to stay afloat and compete for a couple years until Bichette/Vlad/Alford/Gurriel/Urena break in and stick. C Russell Martin 1B Justin Smoak 2B Devon Travis SS Troy Tulowitzky 3B Jedd Gyorko LF Kevin Pillar CF Lorenzo Cain RF Teoscar Hernandez DH Kendrys Morales or Steve Pearce IF Lawrie/Barney, Refsnyder, Jansen/Torres, Tellez? TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 We need to bump the Tulo trade thread again. I believe there was a point last season that someone bumped it on me.

SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I think it might behoove the FO to spend right to the luxury tax threshold. This might keep 3M bums in the seats for 2018. And if it's spent on FA's, it'd keep the farm intact. When we traded and signed a bunch of players in 2013, we sucked, but man attendance was up. I'd like to do this again, hopefully without the "suck" component. What happened to the MLB USD to CAD exchange rate subsidy that the Jays used to receive? Even though it's improved from the FO's POV, a ~25% kickback would sure be nice. I thought that was a possibility a few years, to restart that subsidy?

I just meant that I'd rather this team have something like Stanton and a young stud starter in Reyes than extend Donaldson. I'd love to see Stanton and Donaldson terrorize pitchers together next year, but that means you're likely letting him walk for nothing the following offseason and I don't think a trade deadline return for him would be that much either.
