SAAviour Verified Member Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Any if you living in Toronto, go watch Joey Bats last home stand. He might be having a horrible season, but the guy is a Blue Jay god! Cheer his every at bat LOUDLY! When he hit that bat flip home run, I was 10 beers in sitting intensely on the edge of my seat with a couple friends. I nearly hit my head on the ceiling I jumped so high, cleared the coffee table and nearly passed out from the rush of blood to my head! Unreal moment! Give the guy a statue Rogers!
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 I think there's a pretty strong chance he may retire this off-season. I don't think his ego will allow him to sign a one-year deal as a part-time player, and currently he is a DH with a below league average bat, so I don't see much of a market developing.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 What a great homerun in the playoffs!!!!!...but for the most part I'd pay for him not to play for the Jays again....really dislike him
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 I hope he retires. Nobody needs to see him hang on in the short side of a platoon.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 What a run he had with us. Played a key part in making the franchise relevant again. He was one of the few reasons worth watching during the first couple of post-Halladay seasons and then was a key part in getting the team back to the postseason. I'll miss watching him play but it's time to hang them up IMO. My guess is he tries to keep playing though. I don't really blame him but I'm not sure why kind of contract he could get at this point.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Imagine the haul we could have had 3 seasons ago when the time was right to move him
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 I hope he retires. Nobody needs to see him hang on in the short side of a platoon. Bautista has had a big drop in bat speed this year. The part I'm not sure about is whether it's from his apparent change in approach to use the whole field more, a hand or arm injury, or just age. If it's the latter, then it's time to hang them up. If it's something correctable, someone could get a hell of a bargain this offseason. It's interesting to note that his defense seems to have improved quite a bit this year.

That was a huge HR etched in our relative short history, but a statue, c'mon! I agree that he should be cheered.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 Nah, just a differing philosophy on asset mgmt. Prospect development and a focus on continuous asset renewal (moving aging assets for younger ones) is the way to win WS IMO. Kinda like the Rays have been running things (or were under Friedman). And Spanky I know is still butthurt for giving me a 1st rounder for Bautista.

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2017 Posted September 19, 2017 f***ing going to miss him a lot... what a unique player, hes the first and only jersey I have ever owned in any professional sport, I hope if he doesnt retire this year, he will ultimately agree to retiring as a Jay.

How many WS did the Rays win under Friedman?
MiddleAgedJoker Verified Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 There's a lack of appreciation in the guy's appreciation thread. I'll tell you this; not many players have improved themselves as much as Bautista did in mid career. A lot of players, never given a fair shot and shuffled from one organization to another, might have given up, either completely or just in effort. He kept working hard, and when opportunity arrived, he became a star. Bautista for (the catcher they traded from him; name escapes me) is a legendarily wonderful trade. What a player, what moments.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 How many WS did the Rays win under Friedman? That's the argument? How many WS did a team with no resources win?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 That's the argument? How many WS did a team with no resources win? Considering he proclaims that's how you win the WS, yes.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Considering he proclaims that's how you win the WS, yes. That's how you create sustainability and long term competitive baseball. There are far worse things than that...like two strong years then getting old and s***** fast.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 That's how you create sustainability and long term competitive baseball. There are far worse things than that...like two strong years then getting old and s***** fast. It's been what, four years since the Rays made the playoffs? Eventually you also need to retain some guys and go for it, rather than trying to extract every penny by shipping guys out. The Rays have no choice due to payroll. It's not the perfect model you seem to think it is.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I respect the s*** out of Jose. By studying the game and working his ass off, he became a phenomenal player - arguably the best hitter in baseball for a short period. He carried this franchise though bad times and then through the good times. His HR v. Texas is something I'll never forget. I watched it with my 5 year old son, leap over the table, ran out into the street and screamed at the top of my lungs. That inning was unreal. That said - I never liked his personality or the way he treated umpires and I don't think he deserves a statue.

We are talking about winning a WS.

I don't think any of us liked that nonsense.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 11-27-2015 Only two years old, but a sudden shift in philosophy from Jimbo. No change in philosophy. I had been calling for Jose to be traded for some time. That post was made in a thread debating extending JB and EE. If you arent going to trade him, then sure, talk extension. I was right on choosing EE over JB.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Okay, but we aren't talking about sustainability and long term competitive baseball? We are talking about winning a WS. No we are talking about winning a WS, and the way to do it is by fielding a consistently competitive team. Probability is, one of those years, the team stays healthy, a couple of guys have career years, and the team wins a WS. The 'window' model that AA and the accountant pursued is a stupid approach. You've only got a short window of time where everything has to go right (health, performance, etc).
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 His peak was right up there with the best we've seen in a Jays uniform. He helped make baseball relevant in Toronto again and he'll always have that big iconic moment. We definitely should give him a proper send off, but I do hope this is it for him.

It's not the perfect model you seem to think it is. There's a balance. You don't turn every veteran into a young controllable asset, but you also have to have foresight and move some veteran pieces while they still have value.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Can you asshats namely JC... leave this out of an appreciation thread? We don't go B2B ALCS' without Jose, it was calculated FFS's.
