Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I mean if all it took was for him to be excited about playing with Mike Trout then he's good in my books.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Kind of funny because player development wise the Angels have been terrible. And their Owner is known to meddle.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 lol @ the Phillies fans in the comments begging him to go.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 How much did the Angels have to give him? $2,315,000 ??? Signing bonus 20M to the team League minimum salary for 3 years?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Kind of funny because player development wise the Angels have been terrible. And their Owner is known to meddle. Well they did develop a late first round pick into one of the best players of all time. If I were them I wouldn't let anyone forget about that.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 How much did the Angels have to give him? Signing bonus 20M to the team League minimum salary for 3 years? I imagine he's taking whatever the Angels have left of their international FA pool.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 The Angels' farm system is looking pretty good only one year after it was the laughing stock of the majors.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I imagine he's taking whatever the Angels have left of their international FA pool. I would imagine, I was just trying to find out how much they had available
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Kind of funny because player development wise the Angels have been terrible. And their Owner is known to meddle. And all their starters were hurt last year. Same with the Mariners who were also apparently one of the front runners for him. Player development and medical acumen couldn’t have been all that important to him. Though as mentioned I think the Angels have been run pretty well since the GM change.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I would imagine, I was just trying to find out how much they had available I thought it was around $2.5 million, but I'm probably wrong.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I thought it was around $2.5 million, but I'm probably wrong. I found one writer who says it was 2.315M Quite a bit less than Texas had (3.5M) Glad to hear he wasn't just trying to nickle and dime teams for more money. This is pennies compared to what he should eventually make.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I thought it was around $2.5 million, but I'm probably wrong. Angels have $2.315m left according to MLB.

When I look to hire someone I pretend to be looking for all of these qualifications relevant to the job when in reality I just want to hire one of my pals or some hot chick with big boobs. People lie. Holy f***.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Interesting. If you're going to LA - why on earth would you choose the Angels over the Dodgers? The only logical answer is because they play in the AL and thus give him the opportunity to DH....but the Angels have Pujols for the next 47 years clogging that s*** up - so I don't get it unless they told him they were going to stand Pujols at first base. Assuming the Angels leave Pujols at DH - I'd render a guess he'd of racked up more PA's with the Dodgers (between hitting for himself + pinch hit duties). Maybe the Angels plan on sitting Pujols once or twice a week to let Ohtani DH (but not regularly)?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 The Angels are suddenly a really fun team. Trout/Upton/Simmons/Calhoun are a great lineup core, and Ohtani is exactly what that rotation needed. If Richards/Skaggs/Shoemaker/Mayer can stay reasonably healthy, they have a chance to be pretty good. ahhh - these guys were league average hitters. I think it's a stretch to call it a great core.

Yeah I don't see where he gets playing time consistently in the field, unless there is some agreement where he will split time between OF and DH. They can probably displace Cron pretty easily, and either play Pujols' corpse at 1b or move Calhoun to 1b when Ohtani plays the outfield. I'm sure they have something figured out. Honestly, considering the amount of surplus they will be getting from Ohtani, and the fact that his contract only runs for 4 more years, I'd be tempted to just release Pujols. Cut your losses. That's sunk cost anyway, and you're getting a $100-200m talent for peanuts over the next six seasons. No need to complicate things by accommodating a player who hasn't been good in years.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 I heard the Jays were disqualified because they submitted their presentation on KeyNote instead of Power Point.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 ahhh - these guys were league average hitters. I think it's a stretch to call it a great core. One of those guys is possibly the best defender ever, a consistent 3+ win player coming off a 5 win season. The other is also an above average player, who was still an average player in a down season coming off consecutive 3.5+ win seasons. Seems like a silly thing to nitpick over. Among that core is the world's best player, who automatically makes it a good core all by himself and Justin Upton who is pretty damn good himself.

I still blame Trudeau for this, as with everything else that goes wrong with this country. The one good thing he does is sucking up and he couldn't even do us Jays fans a solid and convince the young man that Canada was the place to be. Recruiting Ohtani here would have been his greatest accomplishment as PM (TBH, probably the greatest accomplishment out of many PMs)
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Didn't know Eppler was in the Yankees organization. Makes sense. Cashman has been putting in work the last few years, and Eppler has been very good as well.

Sorry, when I read "lineup core" - I though offense, not defense. To be honest, despite his WAR totals, I never considered Kevin Pillar as part of the Jays "core" in 2015 or 2016. Their offense was 10th of 15 in the AL last year. A full season of Trout and Upton will certainly help, as will whatever Ohtani provides, but I just don't see them as a good offensive team. The rotation could be good, if healthy - but that's been a massive issue the past couple of years. They were 5 games out of the 2nd WC spot last year and 11 games out of the 1st WC spot. They don't even have any young players in their lineup who are expected to make significant improvement (unless you believe in CJ Cron - which you shouldn't). They are going to have to continue to add payroll to make this a "good" team I'm afraid unless they incredible lucky with SP'ing health. That blueprint rarely works.
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2017 Posted December 8, 2017 Imagine being a Texas fan right now, haha goddamn. I will never get tired of their misery.

Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
